I have no illusions, this will get voted cold pretty quickly due to Amazons OUTRAGEOUS postage charge on it (£6!!), BUT if you're buying something else and need to top up the price for free delivery, this is pretty nice and a good price for a good name. On top of that I think they look great (and they work) :-)

Cole & Mason H630180 Tap Gift Mill Set Size: 115mm (4In) These Salt And Pepper Mills Can Be Adjusted To Give A Choice Of A Fine Or Coarse Grind Simply By Tightening Or Loosening The Knob.

---

Also come with a lifetime guarantee. Can't say fairer than that ;-)

Often the way on ebay unfortunately. How about this one, the Buzz Buzz

I was wary of typing Buzz into amazon in case something of an entirely different nature appeared:whistling:

After our last set of Cole & Mason manual salt and pepper grinders turned out to be near to useless I decided that we would get a different brand. Turns out there isn't that much choice and in the end I bought these http://www.robertdyas.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=311&storeId=91&productId=33924&langId=-1&cache_entry=-1&parent_category_rn=&parents_parent_category_rn=&top_category_rn=&showSubCategory=&top=Y&fromPage=SearchResults
I'm not keen on Russell Hobbs after the dangerous kettle recall fiasco but these are great. The only complaint is that they seem to go through batteries quite quickly - rechargeables are a must.

Personal taste (& obviously voted hot in support of our friendly neighbourhood pirate) but the Ikea 'spice' mills @ £3.99 each (instore) are also a pretty effective bit of kit if you've got a store nearby.
4 different courseness settings & ceramic grinders.....mine are around 6-8 years old & still going strong....more than can be said for the GF that dragged me round Ikea picking this & another hundred odd quids worth of kitchen stuff that we just had to have......
(garlic press is still knocking about somewhere)

Voted hot. We've had the salt mill for years and it's still going strong. Way better than the wooden ones. I like the look of the Ikea one - but the massive downside is that you have to go to into Ikea to buy it.

Dave-T were they Cole and Masons?
They seem high quality.

I went pepper mill mad and ordered these as a present for relative and

We've got these and are sat in the cupboard doing nowt having been replaced by manual ones. We had to refill them every few days, ate batteries faster than I don't know what and were terrible for the kids coz they liked the novelty of it rather than anything else. If we didn't watch them, they'd just keep their finger on it

I've been using them for years, a classic design they work really well and ideal when your hands are covered in foodstuff, unlike others there's no messing and your hands can't slip off the tap as with other twist designs...

Word of warning on the electric ones. The salt eats through metal and ******s them up. I've gone through a couple, and then went 'manual'.

The Aldi ready filled spice mill things are pretty good.

The Cole & Mason lifetime guarantee really works. I've had one for over twenty years and it's broken twice in that time. Both times just sent it back and received it back fixed and cleaned up, or new one.

Yeah they seem to have done a good job cornering their market.

Anyone got any recommendations on good salt/pepper to go in them?

I recommend sea-salt in preference to standard there is definitely a pleasant difference in taste

Order arrived, I think I see why there were on offer, the tap type handle does look a bit awkward and large, still they're not for me :)

Finally found something else to buy to get free postage and they're now out of stock!
Hopefully they'll be back soon, and not discontinued or something.
