Went to Poundstretcher at Alfreton (Somercotes'ish) and saw 100ml tubes of Colgate for 59p which thought was a good deal so checked when got home and it's a quid at Tesco and Asda so I reckon that's a good (if a little boring) deal.

I wouldn't buy toothpaste from poundstretcher. Wasn't it them who were found out out selling fake toothpaste last year. I think it was... AVOID.

Absolutely, avoid Poundstretcher at all costs based on your vague memory of a news story.

Alternatively do a bit of research and find out that it was in fact some of the 'giants' who where implicated in this particular scandal:

Fake toothpaste removed from shop shelves

More likely "euro" toothpaste brought over the channel - ever noticed how sale products from poundstretcher and others often have ingredients listed in greek or whatever???

Stupid me, on opening the packet I've actually found it's napalm laced with rat-poison that's been dyed white and supplied to poundstretcher black-market style by Lithuanian Gangsters and not actually the plain white colgate toothpaste as the box would imply. Thanks to everyone for their evidence based comments if only I'd asked before posting. On saying all that it did taste minty like the real stuff I but hell I'll pay more for the real thing next time, oh yes.

Actually this is a good point. I have often wondered how the £1 shops (and our local 99p store) sell some of the toiletries at such cheap prices - some of the toothpastes are 99p when they should cost £2.99 they should be. I was thinking they must be dodgey as they are at such a discount. How would you even tell they are - they look the same bar the foeign language etc but how would you ever tell?
