I bought one of these for my son last weekend and it's a good all round laptop. It has a C2D processor, enough memory, adequate HDD, looks good. It doesnt come with a Vista disc, you have to make backup discs when you get it home but he's happy with it ( a 17 yr old lad) so it's a bargain for me.

Great find

You are joking, aren't you? Quality build , screen, speakers, keyboard, reliability? Also the same ? I know, it's 'just' satellite but I would never compare Toshiba with that cheap $%&$%.
#6
Would rather have this than the acer mentioned
#7
I recommended this to someone on another forum last week but they were unable to get one at their local store so someone suggested acer and they actually went out and brought it. No way i would buy an acer over toshiba.

Personally if this was my budget i would go for hp GZ974EA on Play for £349.99. HP are one of the best brands out there and to get it for that prices it is a bargin, even though it is a slightly lower spec than the acer i would def prefer the piece of mind that hp gives

Yep, that's a nice laptop too.

Build quality probably similar to the Tosh, bigger disk, great speakers, better integrated graphic

the downs - slower cpu , no webcam and no recovery disc as usually from HP ;)...But, yes, worth considering.

Great price OP, Toshiba are up there with Sony for built quality.

If anyone is thinking about an HP they should be aware that they pre-load their laptops with so much trial software it slows it down to a jibbering wreck. If anyone goes for a HP download this - http://www.yorkspace.com/pc-de-crapifier/ - PC Decrapifyer.

yeh your right there russ about all the software rubbish on an HP, i had to get rid of loads of stuff on my ex's brothers
#12
Just curious to know which ACER Model has given you problems in the past?
#13
Sorry, that question is to Pilot Light or has it gone out?:w00t:

Yeah, I dont know why HP insist on doing it, I guess they get revenue from the software makers, but it makes for a terrible experience when you first turn it on and its kind of given them a bad name.

On the Acer question, generally theyre better spec for the same money as a Sony or a Toshiba, but personally I dont think theyre as nice build quality, and I also dont like the design as much, but theyre still good machines.
#15
was the OP's price the instore price or the web price? The online price seems to have gone up and gone out of stock too.
#16
No stock...?

I think that while Sony, Toshiba, HP etc are better brands the Acer isn't as bad as people make out. Toshiba make their lower quality laptops with cheaper material (in fact they more than likely just stick their badge on a laptop that somebody else manufactued). If you look at the low end Toshiba, HP and Sony's and compare with their mid-high end models the is a world of diference quality wise. Its the same with LCD TV's.
I guess my point is don't always just look at the brand.

My rant aside, this is a good deal If anyone can get hold of one

My wife has a higher spec toshiba than this one that i bought my son at the weekend and the build quality of my wife's is better but for the price, this one is good value. Toshiba also load their machines with **** too by the way, Mcaffee9uninstalled right away) and lots of Toshiba "utilities" that will never be used. It took an hour to get rid of it all.

no I don't think he was joking no, I have this same Acer which I got for £250 a while back on here.
For a home user its fine no problems what so ever. In fact its the 2nd Acer I have had and have no problems with the "build quality" I guess the marking makes you think Panasonic is better...

No recovery disk? whats it matter? All it usually is, is a seperate partition of the one hard disk, so you can create a recovery partition yourself.
Webcam doesn't really contribute to the debate either.

So do you want bigger hard disk and better graphics or faster CPU? That is the real question to ask yourself.

I found this on the Dixons site priced at £349.00 and with the £10.00 discount voucher you get it for £339.00. How does this compare to these others??

Good deal but i would wait until the dell deals start after Christmas. I got a better spec from Dell last January for the same price.
#23
I bought a similar Tosh last year and I decided to return it straight away. I was really let down by the poor screen and cheap feel of the machine. HP and Dell seem to have better machines for around the same price.

Spot on. It's my second ACER as well. Previous one still going strong and now belongs to my daughter who does all her usual stuff on it with no problem at all.....

See i thot that about the HP, i thot they felt cheap

lol i think its just a general preferance really to what u like !
#26
Out of stock, and gone up in price... it's an ok deal, not really that hot though.

(also, I've advised two people to buy Acers until now, and they seem solid enough; and as mentioned, just wait for the Dell deals, or use the Dell Outlet)
#27
I will never buy an acer! they make **** computers.. choose toshiba or hp instead.. they are far reliable!
