Best price I can see by a few pounds, game is released on 16th March (although may turn out to be a few days later in the UK).

I've played the open beta, seems at the moment a very rubbish and unrefined game. It's not C&C any more, it is basically a clone of Dawn of War II sadly.

I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

For a pre-order the price seems good though.

Cheers for the review, I wasn't too sure about the new concept when I first saw it but I like the look of the videos and I like the idea of respawning etc. 5v5 sounds cool too!!

Luckily there's a free open beta which I'll play soon! I suggest people try it before buying!

Lets hope it's not another EA rushed-to-market game that is full of bugs and poor support - hate to gripe but the old original C&C games were fantastic when Westwood were still in charge....personally will probably wait for 6 months until it goes budget and spend the money it deserves...

Let's hope so, last couple of games have been so un-ready when going to market!!

How do you reckon the story ends? Kane is surely the good guy who saved the world from a mass invasion from the scrin? Thought they'd be back again but I don't think they're in this game and it's the last game in the series?

EDIT - It appears that this is the last in the series that Kane will be in (hence being called "The man who killed Kane"). There may well be more in the future with Scrin returning.

Thanks for the rep people, could you leave your names though so I know who to thank!

We all know that good bad guys never die. They just come back with a scar on their face, or some other physical affectation...

Ok, I've played the beta quite a bit now.

At first found it very confusing, still a little confusing, will take a while to learn all the units and upgrades etc. Quite like the idea of a mobile base and unit cap, means you can really focus on what you've got rather than have a massive empire that you can't keep tabs on properly. Communication is key in game, haven't tried out the mic yet but will tonight hopefully.

I'm still not sure about the points system. Basically the more you play the better your rank, which means you have access to better stuff, which means you beat people. Which unfortunately means my first 10 games I was completely and utterly raped! I thought my team would help but unfortunately they seemed worse than me so we lost every single game! Anyway, now I've got some more stuff and I've worked out what I'm doing I'm starting to enjoy it more.

Give it a go on the free beta, join me in game: "Benjimoron".

Oh, and school boy error, it's "Tiberian Twilight!".

I played it quite a few hours over the weekend and found pretty much the same as yourself. I think the key to this game is getting in with a bunch of guys who are good. I was getting pummelled at one point and my two team-mates, who were at the opposite side of the map, came to my aid by dropping their bases between the bad guys and me.

I was completely surprised - people ACTUALLY HELPING in an on-line game instead of calling you a 'fag newb' or whatever the insult of the day is. It's one of those games, like L4D where you HAVE to pitch in to survive, and for that reason I really like it.

The UI is a bit rough in the beta, and almost every option is locked down, but it's definitely worth persevering with, IMO.

Good stuff, I'll be on-line tonight from about 8pm. Would be good to get a hukd game going.

Who's in?

Wowwww. CNC4!! I didn't even know about this!! Voted hot. It's just a shame that I've got an EEE PC right now, which probably won't play it.

Agreed, from what I've seen so far, I'd rather them have released another addon pack for one of those games than this.

Shame C&C has got worse and worse. I'd pay this type of price for a classic C&C game if it were released today, graphics are irrelevant, they were brilliant games. Graphical improvements usually mean the game itself gets poorer.

ill be on soon :)
#24
i've found it pretty good so far, though the spammers can be frustrating and there are several issues that need resolving pretty sharpish in my opinion (being able to have several repair drones/engineers repair one unit kinda makes it invincible). not sure if i'll get it when its released though, not proper c&c for me, might start cracking out tiberian sun again. those were the good old days...........
#25
kinda looks pants to me, but then I havnt played it so not really fair to comment.

what I do REMEMBER is westwood and the original C&C and it was truly awesome - this doesnt look revolutionary like the 1st one, or appear to build on the strengths.

did Westwood get bought out, or did they go t1ts up?
#26
ah doesnt look like it was too pleasant for the staff of Westwood studios;

In August 1998, Westwood was acquired by Electronic Arts (EA) for $122.5 million in cash, and at the time Westwood had 5% to 6% of the PC game market.[1]. In response to EA take-over, over 200 long-time Westwood employees quit and left Westwood Studios.

Every C&C since (and including) Generals is EA I think?

yeah thats right, tho red alert 2 (cant remember if was before or after generals) was EA. if they spent as much time getting games like fifa right by listening to fans then why can't they get one of the biggest RTS franchises right, there's probably millions of people out there prepared to give EA feedback on this and yet they don't seem to listen :(

Generals is great (played it today actually)

I hated the beta. As I said on the beta forum: Just take the best bits from the original C&C and RA and make it look really pretty. Why is it so difficult?

Using this formula and a digital distribution model you could easily make a superb PC/Console C&C game that turns a profit. It could even work as a fleshed out skirmish/multiplayer only title to keep production costs down. Just focus on the core C&C gameplay that made it so brilliant back in the mid 90's.

I quite liked it actually despite not playing it for years because from the few screenshots I'd seen I thought it had "gone 3D", it wasn't as bad as I imagined and liked it when I played it but still not as good as the old ones. I was hoping they'd do another game in that setting actually.

To me 3D graphics killed RTS, to me the best thing for RTS is 2D isometric, when these 3D RTS games started appearing I didn't play as many RTS games, they're too fiddly for a start, I want to control my units without having to control a camera angle as well. Then there's the fact that the quality of games has in general gone down, as has the difficulty of games as the quality of graphics goes up. I found Red Alert 3 really easy, finished all but one mission first attempt, compared to the first C&C games which took ages for me to finish.

Of course, it's not likely anyone will release 2D isometric RTS games anymore, not with terms like "HD" being thrown at everyone constantly these days

Same thing for me, I only play as GDI (level 20 wahoo!) but there are 3 things that annoy me about nod.

Firstly they seem to be able to repair things quicker than a whole team can destroy something, makes things invunerable (even the repair drones themselves!), I think this is maybe a support power so basically I'm talking about 2v1, if I had a support player with me at the time it might be better.

Secondly the planes, venoms I think, they seem to be able to have loads of them, I can usually only just about fight them off but sometimes they'll overpower me.

Thirdly their thing with an obelisk on which can grab the legs of the titans annoy me, but then I should probably use other stuff, they seem to be the only real weakness to the titan.

The game is all about team work, and I haven't found anyone else on my team using a mic yet and when you play randomly with people online you get about 10 seconds to decide your tactics! Would be really good if you had a mate that you played with as you could properly work together and decide tactics in advance.

A fairly simple solution to please everyone would be to just have a fixed top down camera view option ;-)

I'm not sure if this is something you can do in WIC as the camera control in that game is pretty impressive..
