Probably best to get from Direct2Drive ... at least you will be able to re-download it in the future rather than having to pay again to download from EA

How does this work? Does it give you a CD Key?

I brought a physical copy of the game for my brother a while back for his birthday but we need a second copy to play LAN games.

Can I buy this, get the CD key and install off the physical disk or will it only work using Direct2Drive?

EDIT - Just looked into this a little more, I don't think this is actually through Direct2Drive but through EAStore directly (are they the same thing? I've never used either) my question still stands though, will I get a CD Key that I can write down and use in the future with the physical DVD I already own?

isnt it like steam where it goes by your account?

To re-download a game you have already purchased, simply Log In to EA Download Manager and select the game you would like to re-download. The EA Download Manager stores a copy of your downloaded products, so if you just want to reinstall your game, you will not need to re-download it. If you do wish to re-download the game, don't forget to first remove the game's temporary files by clicking the small (X) next to the game in the EA Download Manager window

For Mac

To download software you have already purchased, you will need to look up your order and click the Begin Download button.

I assume that if you download, and use the downloaded copy, there is no CD check?

I hate games where you constantly have to put that game's CD in the tray.

If you read the T&Cs from the EA Store it only allows you to download the game once, so if your HDD crashes and you haven't backed up that download you will have to pay again. Direct2Drive registers the purchase against your login ID, and you can re-download at any time, like you can with Steam.

Hope this helps :)

Taken from EASTORE, it seems to suggest you can re download and that the game purchases are linked to your account??

Can I download the EA Download Manager without purchasing a game?
Yes. You may need to re-download the download manager without purchasing a game if you have changed your PC, or want it on two machines. To download the application, click on the button below:

EA Download Manager is an application for downloading patches or buy games from the EA Store.
If you prefer to buy digital copies of games instead of going out to the shops, this is the application for you. As well as managing your premium downloads, EA Download Manager also initiates decryption of the games, runs the installer and launches it. If a game requires a DRM (digital Rights Management) license, this will be acquired by EA Download Manager too. You just have to create an EA Store account and you're ready to go! Hundreds of titles one click away!
As well as downloading games, this application also keeps you updated with patches and updates for your games, so you'll always be up-to-date.
Besides download / patch / update, you can register the copies of your EA Games so if you loose your CD, you can always download a new copy from the EA Download Manager. The downside of this application is that it have to be running in order to play the games you download.
EA Download Manager is a perfectly capable download manager, although it is obviously limited to EA games. A more flexible system would be preferable.

Does this work the same way with Direct2Drive?

Can't answer you that as I have never used Direct2Drive before but I'm sure that Direct2Drive will have more info via here and here.

Judging by some of the online reviews on Google, Direct2Drive is just a video game and entertainment distributor and retail store operated alongside its FilePlanet service by IGN and GameSpy since 2004. Rather than selling physical inventory, the site provides online-only distribution of computer games, movies, anime, TV and comics using the Direct2Drive Download Manager, and allows customers to re-download purchased materials on demand.

Download PC Games Direct to Your Hard Drive
Direct2Drive, a digital download retail store, allows gamers to download PC games directly to their hard drives and offers game publishers a new channel to sell both their new and catalog PC game titles.

Excerpted from the website:
Passionate About Entertainmenthttp://corpmedia.ign.com/corp/images/spacer.gifIGN Entertainment, a unit of Fox Interactive Media, Inc., is a leading Internet media and services provider focused on the videogame and entertainment enthusiast markets. IGN's properties collectively attract more than 31 million unique monthly users worldwide. Our network of videogame-related properties (IGN.com, GameSpy, FilePlanet, TeamXbox, 3D Gamers, Direct2Drive and others) is the web's number one videogame information destination and attracts one of the largest concentrated audiences of young males on the Internet. We also own and operate the popular movie-related website, Rotten Tomatoes, and one of the leading male lifestyle websites, AskMen.com. In addition, we provide technology for online game play in videogames.

Thanks for that.

If say I wanted to buy an old game like XCom: UFO Defense where the game needs to run through Dos Box, is it better to get the game through Steam or through Direct2Drive?

Gog don't sell it. Problem with Steam is that you need to be logged onto Steam to play it. At the same time its a hard game to get working and Steam probably have put most effort in getting it to work through DosBox?

Then again, its currently cheaper on Direct2Drive.

At the EA Store – buy any 2 games for £5 each (in the offer), and then add Mercenaries 2 and the basket for 3 games = FREE

http://eastore.ea.com/store/eaemea/cat/off...goryID.14365500

I bought the combo of dead space, mirrors edge and mercenaries 2 - so it may not work for other combos. But free is free :)
