Being a complete novice but looking to buy this style of bike, how does this compare to http://www.rutlandcycling.com/13386/GT-Tempest-1-0.html

This looks like a jump/trick bike to me(notice the low saddle). I would go for the bike in the OP myself ( Commencal is a well known and reviewed brand).

Also consider the Focus Fat Boy (at wiggle cycles) and the Malt 1 (at merlin cycles) - both online.

They both looked similar styles to me!!

Jazid, the two bikes you mentioned are allot more expensive than the Commencal or GT, certainly more than I want to pay!! Is there anything else in this price bracket that should be considered??

Im thinking of getting this

I have this bike and it's well within the price range. Its an urban/jump bike so rigid forks at the front. Loads of fun and unless your going to handle some pretty serious downhill/xc riding you'll be fine. by the way, the spec is better than the commancal posted. £50 cheaper too.

cheers

My Dad has the Commencal Combi S from 2007 and it is a FANTASTIC bike. We looked at the one in this offer, and my local bike shop wouldn't go below about £500, so we didn't buy it. 6 months later I managed to buy, brand new, the full-sus version worth £850 from my local bike shop on eBay for £320!!!! They even came and set it all up professionally and gave us a free service! Ha!

The geometry of all the Commencals is spot on IMO. They all have a very easy and nice riding style, and cruising along at a constant speed is a breeze. I would recommend anyone looking for a lower range mountain bike to get this one. I'm waiting for the Commencal Combi Disc to be a bargain tho.

So do I.
It's great bike.

Although this is a great deal for a mountain bike, if all you're going to do is ride this bike on the road it ceases to be such a good deal.

On the road you're better off getting either a road bike or a hybrid and there are many half decent hybrids for around this price. Skinnier tyres and bigger wheels really do make all the difference.

I just bought this the other day, arrives tomorrow if all goes well. Not an outstanding spec, but I thought it was a good bike for the price and brand. Has jump bike styling, without actually being a jump bike :-D

The Commencal looks to be a great price for the spec, although it looks rather dull as far as styling goes, that's if that matters to you :p

prices for mountain bikes are crazy now? im not clued up on them so why would anyone want to spend £300 on a bike?

Your right mate. Unless your going to get something out of rear suspension etc, or performance parts, then £300 is all you really need to 'sensibly' spend ;-) I paid a shade over £200 for my brand new Dahon Espresso 12 months back, just sold it on for £150, so essentially i got a years worth of biking for £50 (not including maintainence etc) The bike I've ordered will be getting sold 12 months from now no doubt! :-D:p

Just ordered one of these using http://www.cyclesceme.co.uk
I had to pay an extra 10% admin fee (because that's what cyclescheme charge the shop) but I was happy to do so to get an extra 40% off :-D

Its a fantastic bike for the price.
