For this kind of money I wouldn't expect any notebook to have MXM based graphics, especially when it takes ram from the system ram and does not have any dedicated...

Hi Edi, Personally think that this is a better deal than the £399.99 Celeron Notebook PC that PCWorld are advertising.

Voted hot!.
#4
Thanks riker, cuddy & MacNewbie :)

Good deal Edi. Personally I think i'd spend the extra £30 and get the Acer from Comet that comes with 120gb Hard drive, Printer and free Vista upgrade.
#6

got mine from PCWorld which is the same as Currys. Was told by the sales rep that you have to visit a certain website and register your laptop. They will require your receipt as proof of purchase.

If you have already purchased this laptop there is a booklet giving info on how to get a vista upgrade. All you may have to pay for is post and packaging.

Wazza would you be a star and take a few photos of your laptop for us?

Do you think currys will have that same Vista upgrade offer, since they're the same as PC World?

can i ask what finally made you chose the compaq over toshiba?

A few things really. The main ones were that the Compaq has faster memory and better graphics card. A few years ago I used to work for a notebook manufacturer, so I gave a friend there a ring. He said that for the 945 graphics to work well with Aero in Vista, the memory really needed to be 667MHz or faster in his experience. That may well change with new drivers of course and the performance may be acceptable to many people. The Toshiba one is only 533MHz.

There is also the extra 20Gb on the Compaq. However the key one to me was that the Compaq is certified as Vista Premium ready, whilst I couldn't find anything that confirmed the Toshiba was.

To be honest, there is a lot about the Toshiba I liked. It has a faster processor, better battery life, 802.11a and a couple more USB ports.

However, for my sister none of those really matter as it is unlikely to travel further than her sofa, bedroom and office and be plugged in most of the time. She is unlikely to be doing anything that will tax the processor either. Bearing that in mind, the slightly better graphics, the Vista Premium ready certification and the 20Gb extra hard disk space were the clinchers. There is also the fact that I like Compaq kit as well :)

similar to my views. toshiba also has a firewire port. if i was doing to download video/photos from my camcorder i will use my desktop which has a bigger hard drive.

Just realised that the Compaq does NOT have a PCMCIA port, it has a ExpressCard/54 slot (also supports ExpressCard/34) so to add a Firewire port you would have to use one of these

HELP!!!

need some info here. Go onto start - control panel - system. Could those who are wise enough to buy this gem tell me what version of xp media centre is? My version is 2002. Could you then tell me what does it say on the sticker underneath the laptop.Mine says media centre version 2005. Feel that 2005 version is in fact 2002 version with mega updates.

can someone confirm
#36
Just to let everyone know, you can now order your upgrade to Vista Home Premium through the HP website at http://h20219.www2.hp.com/services/cache/416458-0-0-224-121.html

The cost is P&P of £12.90.
#37
now it is 499 but can only get 5% off ..so poor. anyone knows a better deal~~~ help help~~
#38
How does this compare to the Acer at comet which is £479.99. I know the acer has 120gb hard drive but wondered if any of the techies had had a good look at the spec when deciding which laptop they went for.

I've got £500 from work to get a laptop so want to get the best one I can for the money.
suspended#39
spend the extra £50 and get the acer core 2 duo posted here: http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40049

thanks hajj_3

Is the £549.99 acer at dixons significantly better than the £479.99 one at comet. I know one has AMD and one has Intel but apart from that is there really much difference.

Please excuse me being dense but I really want to get the best value for money. I'm guessing the Cache, graphics and the memory speeds are better on the more expensive one
