Good deal, Heat added.

How does this compare with the Dell one if you add another 1gb Ram?
#3
Dell deals better IMO - The dells Brand New where as this is a Refurb and not as good spec either.
#4
Dell deal ?? Which one ??

The Vostro 1000 is Dell's basic model - a bit lumpy and cheap - but OK. I would choose this or a Vostro 1500...
#6
my sister has this laptop, they feel much nicer and look better than the dells, better keyboard too
#8
I can't find a Dell close to this spec for the price - Uppal007 where u talking about a deal in particular?

The only issue I have with it is no room for extra ram but for that price I think I can live with it.

From the HP website ...

Memory 1024 MB (2 x 512 MB)
Memory Max Up to 1 GB DDR2

So running VISTA and you cannot have more than 1GB !
Very BAD spec - steer clear

They are much more stylish and lighter than the Dells - I've had one (refurb)

But a word of warning if you want to put Windows XP on be careful as you cant get all the XP drivers for a lot of these Compaqs, thats one of the reasons there cheap - people have bought them new, tried to install XP, run into problems and sent them back, hence, refurbished, plus the 1GB ram limit mentioned above!

If your ok with Vista then go for it, excellant price plus you still get full 1 year warranty.

I got the 714NR from the states which is the same one as this and was impressed. It has 2 ram slots, so you'll need the 2x1Gb 667Mhz to give it what it needs.

MAX memory is 2Gb not 1Gb, see my post on page 2.

This is true, but if you search on torrents you'll find an XP driver pack for Compaq C700 series (thats this one too), which also works on HP G7000 series (my sister's laptop.

So you can put a stable XP on it with a bit of know-how and have a very nice machine but i dont recommend it for novices

i'm very tempted to get one, i come from a history of Vaios but i was still impressed with the look and feel of this laptop

Shame the max memory is 1Gb

However, for this price you can hardly complain. Heat + Rep added.

Is it the full 1yr warranty that the brand new ones get?

i dont believe that info, these are the same motherboard chassis as some of the other models and they come with 2GB standard.

i'm going to try 2GB if i get it, worth the gamble

I'm certain the 1024mb MAX refers to EACH slot. I have the C714NR from the states, and put 2x1Gb in it, its the same model, part of the Compaq C700 range. If you want the drivers for XP search C714NR as this laptop was $400 a couple of months ago and lots of people have put XP on it.

If you look at page 2 of the manual(link below) it states MAX 2Gb memory.

Many of the "Max" RAM specs are down to what RAM stick sizes are available at the time. If it wasn't possible to buy a 2GB stick when the laptop documentation was made, then the max RAM will be 1GB+1GB. Now, of course, the max RAM would be 2GB+2GB.
#18
seems good to me
#19
Maybe a firmware upgrade ups the max ram.

I got a refurb a 6000 (cant remem which 1) series from pc world about this time last year for £293 delivered, it had 1.7 core 2 duo, 1gb ram 120 hard drive, vista premium. I'm a techy and dont do games or multimedia, just basic low resource stuff, so this was great for that, but i needed Vista and XP on it dual booting but gave up looking for drivers after a few months and sold it on ebay for £370 lol.

poor spec, bad price for the low spec

poor spec, bad price for the low spec

How do you work that out?? The hard drive is 160Gb, a good size, the processor is core2duo based, one of the newest, the graphics are x3100, good for an integrated setup. Works with the memory supplied but would benefit from 2 x 1Gb ram(£26 from play).

Having said that the Vostro 1000 with TK-57 for £269 is better value, but the Compaq is better looking!!

Processor is based on merom 2m.

like i said before, you can get a better spec, but end up working on a dog ugly machine that is heavier, bulkier with bits sticking out and a **** keyboard, eg cheap dells
#23
Is not available anymore at Currys
#24
out of stock. i guess they only had a couple or less only
#25
pcworld have it with £4.95 delivery
#26
Ah ****, all that talk and i ended up missing it
#27
I bought two reconditioned laptops from Currys last year but neither worked properly even after a repair so I got a refund. What have other people experienced? I now bought a Dell from one of MikeT's brilliant bargain spots. I paid less and got a nice laptop and I could choose Windows XP (did not want Vista).

thanks marcosdjcm, i am going to see how it performs, if it will take extra ram i might leave vista on. If not i'll see about XP.

Got mine yesterday - takes 2gig RAM no problem (2 x 1meg sticks) and vista is much quicker with it.
