I think this is the same laptop on Amazon for £299 so you can see the full specs.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Presario-CQ60-305EA-15-6-inch-Notebook-Processor/dp/tech-data/B00272MSAY/ref=de_a_smtd

While this is very low spec (as you would expect) for £249 it would be a fine starter laptop for someone who has not got one.

Adding an extra 1Gb of memory would not cost too much and make a big difference.
#3
how good is the processor?
#4
I got one of these just over a week ago from cdiscount for £274 with free delivery and a free hp carry case.

I am very impressed with it. Even though it is single core it is very good for the money and I had a spare 1 gig so running 2gb now and runs vista very well. It also runs silent and totally cool and the screen is one of the best I have seen on a laptop. The touch pad is also one of the best I have used.

I think it is a bargain at £249.

Sempron is the "low end" CPUs from AMD.

Similar to the "Celeron" CPUs from Intel.

Sempron and Celeron are always put in the budget laptops.

If possible it is better to go for a Core2 Duo from Intel or an Athlon or Turion from AMD, but of course then the cost of the laptop goes up.

I had a dual core laptop before this and to be honest I can't tell the difference. I only surf the net and do basic things with it and it is perfect for my needs.

How many programs actually utilise both cores anyhow?

For netbook money you actually get a proper laptop with dvdrw drive and a cracking screen so it all depends what you need at the end of the day. If you play games you need one with a decent dedicated gfx card.
#7
The same laptop is selling for £299.95 at John Lewis at the moment with two years guarantee.
With the European law kept quiet by retailers you are entitled to two years guarantee anyway.

haha, I took a picture for you guys yesterday as I went to see my dad at work I found it in the warehouse and didn't know when the promotion was starting so took a image anyway..
He gets £25 off this price too quite a bargain. Not sure I need/want one though haha. it'd cost £225

Only program i've noticed that makes full use of the Dual Core P7450 in my laptop is ConvertXtoDVD, It can create and burn a DVD from an AVI file in 30 minutes opposed to my old Celeron which took about 2+ Hours (I'd imagine this laptop would take about the same length of time?).

This Laptop will probably run Windows 7 much better than it will run Vista, but everything is faster than Vista with Windows7 anyway.

Only programs i've found the won't work straight off on Windows 7 are TuneUp Utilities (works in Vista compatability mode though and i'm sure they'll update it soon) and Netgear PS121v2 print server software (you can get around it by letting windows setup a TCPIP printer port). Everything else is fine

The two laptops I have had with AMD processors had far too much heat. Intel all the way for me now.

Decent price though

This one runs totally cool and fan is silent. I can't tell even when it has been on for 10 hours as it is still cold underneath:thumbsup:

Cool. I will give it a try and not even bother to dual boot:thumbsup:

Oh do try to exercise your rights under the Microsoft EULA to recover the cost of the Vista installation!

2 screws much like most laptops. It has one spare slot just clips in. Cant remember what it had in but it is standard ddr2 200 pin sodimm. It takes 4 gig max so 2 x 2gig but I just have 2 x 1gig and it is fine.

They all do, as its the operating system that designates tasks to the different programmes.

Well I cant tell any difference on every day usage from this one to the dual core one my wife nabbed off me. I know I do not do anything apart from basic stuff though so a dual core is wasted on me for sure.

Anyone bought one from Morrisons-are they in stock at most stores
#25
Just got one for my dad in Redcar which is a small store, they had quite a few. Seems an excellent laptop for the money. thanks:thumbsup:

And unless the program is multithreaded, however many cores you have it will only use one per program.
#28
Picked one up in Reading last night, as above a display stand with a load of tickets on it, so don't know how many there actual available.

Also got a Targus 15.4" laptop bag and mouse for a tenner, laptop just fits in fine it's 15.6".

Many thanks to the OP.

PS fitted memory is DDR2 SODIMM 6400 1 x 1Gb. Ordered 2 x 2Gb from Play and going to put Win7 RC on tonight.

Optical drive seems very fussy about DVD media used about six different disks trying to make a restore disk set, Maxwell and Mr. DVD seem to work OK
#29
Morrisons bought 5000 all together, I would imagine they will be out of stock in 1-2 weeks
#30
I bought one this afternoon, after having a look yesterday. For the price it seems good. The screen is acceptable, but the viewing angles aren't worldbeaters. The keyboard and trackpad are good.

The Wireless function set itself up OK. The webcam and mic set themselves up for Skype OK. The webcam gives a sharper picture than my desktop Creative webcam but worse sound than my simple Creative mic (but still OK) ...says a Skype mate.

I'm now busy removing all the junk that comes with Vista eg Aero, User Account Controls etc. The laptop also comes with the world's biggest trial virus...Norton Security; I've disabled it and will uninstall once I'm sure the laptop is reliable. IE also comes with the AOL toolbar; again now disabled.

I've tried the Three Kings DVD in it and it plays fine although I suspect I need better codecs to get it to play in better resolution.

OBH6UK, can you let us know how you get on with the memory upgrade; I'm going to get some more also. Was there any special part No you needed to use?

Summary: As good as you'll ever need for most things.

So you haven't disabled the world's second biggest virus yet - MSIE? ;-)

I did quickly install FireFox, but I've left IE8 on for the moment because I find sometimes Windows Update gets a bit touchy if you don't use IE. There's also trial versions of Office and Works; well, at leadt I'm assuming the Works one is a trail...documentation is a bit thin on the ground...I'll need to spend a bit more time reading the electronic help files. ; -)
#33
Great. Well, trial or not, Works is a castrated office suite; install OpenOffice instead.
#34
<>

Yes, Works is OK for what it is but I've never used it...I've always had access to some or other version of Office. I've often thought about OpenOffice but Office 2003 is still fine for my needs.

The Compaq notebook, by the way, is quite a bulky, heavy beast...but again, for the price, it's perfectly fine.
