Maybe he's been headed hunted or cloned by the DSG group lol.

Good post Mike, nice usable spec laptop. Just bought one of the Dell Outlet ones though, otherwise would have bought this one. Voted Hot.

Thats a lot of laptop for the cash, would be worth spending £15 and buying another 1gb SODIMM for it though running Vista...but reconditioned or not haven't seen a dual core laptop for that price.

I believe this machine has a maximum memory of only 1GB,nice machine but could be limited by that.

Correct,
RAM: 1 GB (installed) / 1 GB (max) - DDR II SDRAM ( 2 x 512 MB )

Sorry if I should not include this link (so will remove if inappropriate), but this seems to indicate that they had upgraded from 1gb to 2gb, so could still be ok, just misleading on the compaq site maybe?

you can also add a PC line laptop carry case for £11 or so (instead of the usual £40) during checkout, this looks ok as well. Think quidco is 3.5%, so all in all looks a good buy.......

thanks for the link

sounds like a mistake in the user manual then, they even have a picture of the 1 memory slot:roll:

Looks a better deal then if 2gig is the limit, I just took what they said as correct edash.

sooo many variables. :? Although great potential competition for a definative answer with clear & concise faultless logic. :w00t:

I wouldn't want a celeron, so rules out this one. As many will disagree as agree I suspect, so I'm not entering the competition.

Let the games begin..

I bought the F454EA version of this laptop thanks to this website about a year ago. It cost me £285 after quidco as well, and I've never regretted buying it. In fact my niece has one too after my recommendation. Screen is excellent, performance is fine, even with 1Gb RAM. The only problem I've seen with these is the PSU DC plug wiring is not the strongest. I had to do a bit of soldering on mine, and eventually my nieces went too and so the soldering iron was out again. The only other "issue" is that the paint/coating of the mouse pad wears away after some months of use. Good laptop none-the-less. Even better price now!

Any other thoughts by people on this laptop. Looking to treat my son after a good first year at secondary school.

Does anyone know if this comes with a wireless adaptor installed? Doesn't seem to from the spec, but thought I'd ask in vain hope!
#17

it dose not seem to have wifi

think it does wifi, according to the spec sheet on the HP site:
Communication
● High speed 56K modem
● Ethernet 10/100BT integrated network interface
● 802.11b/g WLAN

You can check the whole pdf here:
http://h20195.www2.hp.com/PDF/c01090790.pdf

As noted earlier they may be quoting the memory incorrectly, as it looks like you can go up to 2gb

And the discount voucher code was?

Other members might like to use it. I tried a few codes before posting the deal and nothing worked then.

Crucial say that for the Compaq Presario F560US (note US suffix, presumably the US spec, the EM not listed)

http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/listparts.aspx?model=Presario%20F560US

"Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-4200 with a maximum of 1GB per slot. *Not to exceed manufacturer supported memory. £25.84 inc. VAT"

I was just about to post the same, anyways seeing as it's a great deal it may not be around much longer, so if it is out of stock in Dixons people can go for PC World aswell.

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1577398946.1216324839@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccfadeeiijllefcflgceggdhhmdgmi.0&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null&sku=276231&category_oid=-28487

Using the voucher code - NHSDIS3107 [credit to gary_rip for this voucher] gives you an additional 5% off, combined with the 2.5% quidco giving you a total of £217:thumbsup:

I could've sworn I replied to this earlier, but it doesn't seem to be in the thread. Anyway... The battery doesn't last that long to be honest, about an hour and half on a reasonable amount of load before it starts complaining of the battery running low, and about 2 hours or so on a light load. Obviously it depends a lot on whether you're using WiFi, any USB powered devices and so on.

I read somewhere else that it was around the 2 hour mark at the very most so thanks for the confirmation.

Did anyone else buy this laptop? I know its a reconditioned one but i was absolutly shocked at what arrived.

I actually bought this from Dixons and straight away i could see there was something very wrong.

It arrived in a large brown box! and thats it no packaging no padding just a laptop and a charger rattling about in a big box bashing and crashing all over the place. So instantly i thought something was up but i booted it up and managed to get to the vista set up and it froze!

so rebooted and it froze again on startup. and after the third reboot it wouldnt even post so something is fair wrong. there was no documentation either no windows cd or anything.

Rang up today and Dixons are collecting it on monday but i am pretty annoyed that they would even send these out knowing how poorly packaged these are.

I mean apart from being ******ed it actually looks like a good machine for the money but if the replacement arrives in the same packaging it is getting sent straight back.
:x:x:x
[mod]#33
Unacceptable!

I wonder if any others have had the same problem? Maybe you just got the pigs ear.
#34
thats what i am hopeing. maybe the replacement will be better but i have a feeling it will be just the same.
#35
mine came in brown box packing as well, but had secondary packing to protect it a bit, perhaps DSG cant afford bubble wrap anymore lol

still a bargain for under £220, just gotta sort out the correct ram to order for it!

hope its a better one but one thing for sure it WILL arrive in a big brown box as mine did aswel so it appears thats the norm:roll:

mine did have a separate smaller box inside holding the charger so it didn't contact the laptop which is slightly better i suppose.

you wouldn't have thought a bit of bubble wrap would be too much to ask for would you:whistling:

Thats normal packaging for refurbs from dixons & pc world, altho it's usually got a cellophane wrapper around internal tray holding the laptop. I have bought 3 to date without any problems.

I managed to bag one of these spot on laptops. It did arrive in a brown box from Currys, but had sufficient padding to protect it. I was quiet pleased at the lack of usual junk you get with most things these days.

The laptop itself was perfect, no scatches or dings, looked like it had never been used. Had thought of 'down grading' to XP from Vista, but thought I see how it went for a few days (only required for a bit of web development and general use).

Had expected it to be a bit on the slow side, but having removed all the non required software (including Norton and HP this and that), plus unwanted 'services', and added AVG (yes I quiet like AVG free, it works), and added 'open office', 'pspad', 'gimp', 'firefox' and 'faststone', it runs really well. Don't think I even need to up the memory to 2gb.

So all in all, this was a cracking deal for me, in someways I was surprised it was not 'hotter', but then may not have been able to get one.

Hats off and many thanks to Mike for taking the time and the trouble for spotting and listing this :)
