I've been looking for something to replace my trusty but dimunitive Asus EeePC 701 as it's a little too small for my chunky hands and wanted a larger screen too. Also I'd recently lost my 3G dongle so ideally wanted 3G built-in. I saw a previous deal where the Compaq 311c was on offer at the HP Store and went to have a look and was surprised to find it on a special promotion between HP and Orange for £299 (no obligation to sign-up with Orange). Add to that the discount code HPQUIDCO at the checkout and another 10% comes off leaving a delivered price of just £269.10, a bargain I think. You can also go through Quidco for 8% cashback at HP which is another £18.72 off. Assuming that tracks and pays then I will only have paid £250.38 for the netbook !

I know some will say that 11.6" is too large for a netbook but it suits my purposes and hopefully will be useful to others.

if someone says 11 is to large , there an idiot lol, i feel 10 - 12 is a perfect size :D

Seems intresting, theres prob gona be a flush of 10 - 12 netbooks in the new year, seems like there pushing them more as the 10 inch ones have been far more popular than the older 7 - 9 inch netbooks.

Still anything over £200 i still feel to expensive for the spec, but thats just me, heat added

Great price. Don't forget you can change this to a full ION chipset with DX10 using the hacked drivers on http://www.myhpmini.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=2580 or http://www.myhpmini.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=2989:)

Have some heat and rep from me.

Nearly my perfect Netbook with the built-in 3G, bigger screen and decent screen resolution (1366 x 768). However, at 1.45kg it's a bit heavy for a Netbook in my humble opinion so I'll pass this one.

However, my daughter has been nagging for a laptop so I'll take her to PC World to see if she would be comfortable with an 11.6 screen and if so buy this one for her.

Can you give me the spec?
#5
is it good battery life ? better battery than the NC10? overall better than NC10?

Agreed in general I think the netbook category of "ultra cheap and small", has lost some of the cheapness recently.

Good price for a 11.6 with 3g though, so have some heat.

I've now added the spec to the posting. Note that I've corrected the Maximum memory to 3Gb as it has a spare memory slot.

Battery life seems to be around the 5-6 hour mark from what I've read from owners. Not as good as a 6-cell NC-10 but then the screen and resolution are larger on this and the ION chipset means accelerated video and graphics so some games will playable at reasonable framerates. Also remember this has a 3G sim slot built-in for mobile broadband.

Better than an NC10 ? Depends on what you want it for. If you don't need a 11.6 " screen, HD resolution and 3G then the cheaper, lighter and smaller NC-10 would be better for you.

great thanks - will stick with my NC10 until there is a mega offer netbook with HDMI. good deal though.

According to the website it only supports up to 1GB or RAM....

Maybe I just a fussy one but I like MORE memory hahaha

It has 1 GB of RAM soldered in and an empty slot that can take up to 2 GB so a max of 3 GB in total. There are lot's of owners that have upgraded the memory on their 311c - have a look here http://www.myhpmini.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=2349 .

Bargain, I paid £300 for one without the 3G modem about 2 months ago. Miles better than most Netbooks for general usage as the Ion chipset means gaming and HD movies. The screen res is far more use too. Saw recently it has been voted Netbook of the year apparently too.

Only problem with it is the trackpad has an unusual feel to it. You get used to it, but it's not ideal.
#13
I paid more for mine :( but if you're hesitating whether to buy this or not I'd say don't. There's great forums discussing this model at www.myhpmini.com This can be overclocked very easily to 1.9ghz (from 133mhz fsb up to 159mhz fsb) using software, 2gb ddr3 ram can be added (3gb max), and the hard disk is easily swapped out. It can also be hacked with a hp bios utility to full ion, and there are hacked bios's available for enabling use of other wi-fi cards and 3g cards etc.

The high-res screen is great. Been playing Call Of Duty 4 modern warfare on this and it plays great. Left 4 dead plays ok till you get loads after you at once.

My only niggles with it at the moment are the track pad isn't great compared with others I have used in terms of it's movement. Also, if you turn off the 3g (to try save battery), and the machine then boots with it turned off, when you turn it on, you have to reboot before you can connect to 3g internet using the windows 7 connection manager. The fan can get a little noisy at times, but have heard louder fans on laptops.

These are £325 in Asda without 3g.

Take a look at the HP DM1 in PC world. It has the same case, keyboard, touchpad and screen as the Compaq 311c.

Simple answer is no, you'd get about 4 hours net browsing on low power with windows 7. If battery life is what matters consider the Asus 1005ha higher spec model which claims 10 hours life, and is probably market leader in terms of battery life. This has better graphics which eat battery power a bit.

This is a great netbook for the money, order placed and Quidco tracked at £21.52.

The only other netbook that comes close in spec at the moment is the Samsung N510 which costs ~£380 and doesn't have WWAN / 3G.

In January Asus will release their 1201n which has a dual core Atom but again this will cost ~£400 and doesn't have WWAN / 3G.

Can anyone recommend a sleeve / slip case as it doesn't come with one?
#17
I use an Akasa cooling one from Ebuyer. Not 100% convinced of it's colling capabilities but the nbetbook fits in ok and it's good enough to stick the netbook in my bag.

Netbooks have small screens - not satisfying.

Ordered one for my daughter just now - paid £269.10 and Quidco tracked at £21.52, so effectively the cost is £247.58 - brilliant - thanks again for sharing.

Just a quick tip for any students who have a natwest student account, get a student credit card and it gives you 10% off anything from the HP store...i dont know if it works in conjunction with any other discount codes but its worth a try if you have one:thumbsup:

do you get cashback from natwest or does it go thru at the checkout?
#23
Fantastic bargain. I bought the non-3G version a while ago and I'm typing on it now. It's worked really well for me (considering it only has an atom processor) but as somebody else mentioned, the trackpad isn't great. Perhaps that'll get fixed via a driver update, but who knows.

Lots of netbook for your money and deffo good deal.
#24
thanks op, trying to make my mind up if I order this or wait for the Asus Eee PC 1201N in January.
I'd rather this was white & the Asus has a larger HD & windows 7, but Its going to cost quite a bit more than the compaq..........

Heat added.

Thanks.

Hi, I ordered a Lappy from HP store yesterday, if none of the voucher codes work try ONLINE as this gave me 10% off and does work. I went via Topcashback @ 6% and it's tracked this morning.
#28
looks nice and handy especially with the built in 3g
#29
Ordered via Quidco, and used HPQUIDCO discount code for 10%, and hopefully 8% cashback.

*Edit:
Can anyone suggest a 2GB RAM upgrade?
Any ideas which size HDD these take - I assume its standard 2.5" SATA?

*Edit 2: Quidco now tracked - "19 Dec 2009 Hewlett-Packard £269.10 Tracked - £21.52*
#30
I add this to the basket but nothing appears in it ??

I ordered this one from Crucial - http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=9884E339A5CA7304. The 311c takes DDR3 memory which is somewhat more expensive than DDR2 but obviously faster too.

Yes it's a standard 2.5" SATA drive, up to 9.5 mm thick.

By the way I got an email saying that the netbook has been dispatched and should arrive on Monday, great I can tinker with it over the holidays !

Thanks! - Ordered via Quidco hopefully another 7% too :D

Damn! If I hadn't ordered a new PC yesterday which just arrived at my doorstep I might well of plonked the cash down for this, as I'd had my eye on it for some time - upgrading the chipset to full Ion through software, add in some cheap ram and bigger harddrive, stick CoreAVC on for movie playback (taking advantage of CUDA and HyperThreading on the Ion and Atom).

This is gonna bug me all day now lol. Should I get this as well.... hmmmm.... must be good and save money now... or maybe not er..

If you are using Safari it does not like it, I used Chrome and Firefox and it added OK.
