Great deal for a quality laptop.....

You can upgrade the memory to 2Gb quite cheaply too. I expect its got 2 x 512mb in there so you would need to purchase 2 x 1Gb total cost of £60.86. Total cost of the laptop would be £349.86.

I posted the same info in my post above and I got no thanks :-( Anyway got my second email from Currys just waiting for the third email for despatch time.

My bro has one, great lappy. It will be 2 x 512 inside so if you want to upgrade you need 2 x 1gb, which you can get quite cheap from Crucial.

Does the 545 model have wireless ?

I've looked around but can't determine ether way.

Cheers,

Dave

* EDIT - found the datesheet on HP's website and it does have wireless (thought it would be odd not to)

can anyone who has this laptop do a vista score test and post it up here. I want to see what is the performance like. thanks
#16
the cheeky gits put the price up to cancel out the voucher :o
#17
Managed to get it an hour before they put the price up, that was kinda mean of them:evil: - think that was excellent though for £290 + the garantee so it basically is new
#18
Just followed the link on the first page, and the price now appears to be £351.99 + £4.95 delivery = £356.94

Even with 10% off, that's still a lot more than £289.99... or am I missing something, somewhere?

Edit: Sorry... just realised they had automatically added a Symantec Internet Security product for £29.99 so if you take that off, (and then the 10%) I suppose that makes it about right! Still don't think I shall be rushing to buy one though!

Cheapest it can be bought is now: £310.72 inc Quidco cashback. Is a bit mean to up the price like that. Goes to show that discounts are not always discounts!

Mine's on it's way via DHL. Be interesting to see if it's any good!
#24
Just received the laptop today. It's dead. No power what-so-ever. Their repair line say it can be collected Friday, and could take up to two weeks to be returned to me. So I've told them to just give me a refund. Not worth the hassle. Shame really.
#25
That is indeed a shame... not what you expect from a name like Compaq.

So much for their Quality Control!
#26
Not good news for me, mines here tomorrow
#27
My Compaq F545EA from Currys arrived today, I beat the price increase :-D not bad for £295 , All working fine.
#28
Well, I've managed to get it working. I'm using it to write this. Basically, as I told the "technical support" the charger is jiggered. It's simply a bad connection, the connector is of a poor design. I've got my own PSU plugged into the laptop at the moment, and it's working fine. I don't know whether to just try and sort a PSU out with them, or bodge the one I've got with a new connector. I'll ring them tomorrow, and see what they say. I think I'll keep it now though either way. It's a nice latop!

edit... I've fixed the charger. Was just a bad soldered connection. Fresh bit of solder and it's sorted. Will be ringing Currys tomorrow to cancel the cancellation! Nice laptop... shame I had to do a small repair to get it working!
#29
I got mine delivered yesterday all appeared to be working fine until......

I can't activate Vista, I "can't" get onto the laptop to setup the internet connection to enable me to activate online and the UK phone number they supply is dead Can anyone advise me what I need to do ? (thanks)

Secondly I removed the power cable after an hour and the laptop went dead the battery appears not to be holding it's charge.
#30
I just got mine yesterday too. And yep my battery will not charge either. Quality looking laptop, but not very useful if you want to run off the battery (just dies). Will be ringing them today to try and resolve.

To the member who was asking about Vista performance score.
It has a index score of 3.0 (i believe currently out of 5.9) and the Aero (translucent) interface works.
#31
If you google "plugged in, not charging" you will find the non-charging problem is not solely a Compaq/HP issue. It seems to be affecting a lot of systems. The solution... shut down windows. Plug the charger in and out, remove the battery, replace the battery, basically do this until the lightning bolt symbol comes on and stays constant. If it is flashing it means the battery is not charging. There's nothing wrong with the battery, it seems there's a problem in a lot of systems hardware that prevents the battery charging until a bit of fiddling has occurred. This was an issue with mine too, until I googled the problem, found many others are having the same problem, and the fix is basically as described above.
#32
Thanks for the advice garlum. Whilst on the phone to Aftersales i dropped the battery and now it works. To anyone else with the same issue I would recommend your advice over dropping the battery.

Word of warning: If you do have an issue, Currys will need the whole laptop back (as it is re-conditioned) if there is fault. They were considering an alternative of giving me vouchers for PCWorld to 10% of the laptops value - but this is obviously not enough to cover a new battery.

For Aftersales and to avoid the 11 phone options, ring 0870 333 1222 and DONT select an option - it will eventually ring.

Thanks for the tel number....

I just rang them and they agreed to a full refund.

The compaq website shows that this model was manufactured with a sempron CPU and not a dual core prcessor.

Is this deal really that good or is it a mistake by currys?
Looking at this the price of this and some of the others it would seem there is a mistake. Can anyone that bought one confirm?

You'll probably find that there are many variations of the F-series. The F545EA that I have has a Turion 64 x2 1600Mhz dual processor. There very probably is a cheaper version of this laptop with the single processor. But this one is definitely dual processor.
#36
Got mine yesterday, everything working fine - looks really good and it's thin and light which is cool.. Had a bit of trouble activating vista but just called them on the number it gave then updated it fully - then it activated fine

Battery on mine is perfect, was using it for over an hour off the battery
#37
The laptop features a dual core Turion processor and not a Semphron, the comprehensive spec is as follows (taken from laptop h/w using CPU-Z):

Number of processors:1
Number of cores:2 per processor
Number of threads:2 (max 2) per processor
Name:AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile TL-50
Specification:AMD Turion(tm) 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-50
Core Speed:1607.4 MHz

In my opinion, i've seen a lot of PC deals and this is great value for money.
#38
to the person having the problem with the activation, just press f10 when the system starts up and do a complete recovery, you wont need to enter a product id, as it will use the oem mass key for compaq.

I have had a problem with the laptop also. The strangest thing, the left mouse button would work intermittantly, the mouse pad tapping works every time, but the left mouse button not.

Tried swapping over the left and right buttons, right button works fine when swapped, left mouse button still not working.

Currys where completely useless. The 'sales assistant' at Currys instore where completely hopeless, point blank refusing to accept the laptop, as they dont accept 'reconditioned' returns.

After half a dozen phone calls, i have eventually got them to send me a dhl return label....

I tried to ring the number on the screen but the line was dead,
I don't suppose anybody knows a working tel number do they?
#40
Take it you mean the 0800 number wouldn't work - don't know why cause it worked first time for me.. The guy on the phone gave me another number aswell cause mine said this copy of windows is not genuine - ended up sorting itself out but the number was 0870 601 0100
