Starts: 03/02/2010
Thought this was a great deal on pre order at Play.com for all you retro loving gaming geeks (myself included) Seems a great deal for a USB Competition Pro with the classic micro switches and metal stick.
Perfect for playing the included CD Collection of 99 Full Version C64 classics, or for that matter the Atari Stella Emulator, or the Amiga WinUAE etc etc.
*Customised DPI in game adjustment.
*Digital USB joystick featuring micro switches.
*Extensive games collection with 99 full version C64 classics. Includes such classics as Bomb Jack, Ghosts N Goblins, Defender Of The Crown, Turrican and many many more.
*4 buttons featuring that original 80s sound.
*Autofire mode on the back of the base.
*Extremely robust sprung metal stick.
*No driver needed.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The joystick doesn't get recognised by the software by default. This is what you have to do to get it working...
1) Plug in the joystick and start up the game menu.
2) Load up any game and then Settings -> Joystick settings
3) In the drop down box for Joystick #2 select "Speedlink..." (most games expected the joystick to be plugged into port #2 back then).
4) Look in the bottom right hand corner of the window for the game and you will see two groups of 5 dots. Move the joystick and press a few buttons. The dots will light up according to the direction you are pushing the stick or the centre one if press fire.
You only have to do the above once and the stick will keep working across all other games.

The Joystick though at this price is essential for PC Emulators of 8 and 16 bit gaming!

True, but the main point of this is the price point of a USB Joystick I have not seen one this low priced at just a tenner, especially of this quality.
To get a proper experience of playing these retro classics, especially C64 owners keyboard controls just don't cut it, the majority of C64 and Amiga games were Joystick control only..trying to play them with a keyboard just doesn't work the same in emulation. Not like with the Spectrum and BBC whereby the majority of games were designed with the keyboard in mind and the kempston joystick interface as more of an afterthought.
Just try playing Sensible Soccer on the Amiga Emulator WinUAE with the keyboard, you would be frustrated in minutes.

Funny you should say that as I play the pc version of sensible soccer with keys (I did own an amiga 600/1200 and CD32/SX1 expanison) !!
Anyway I didn't vote cold and totally understand what you mean, I must admit forgotten how joysticks feel.
For my retro gaming I've been using a ps1 pad which I use with my sega/nintendo emulators or my N64 pad for playing Wrestling on N64 emulator.
Anyway everyone enjoy your retro gaming : - )
I mentioned the emulators for another deal on here a while back just so those who cant afford those megadrive/snes or others emulators and dont mind playing with keys can hunt them down for free.

I guess the most important thing is its an easy way to get an old skool digital joystick working with any emulator for playing the old C64/Atari 8 Bit/Amiga/ST classics.
