Concorde Auto Centres offering cheapest MOTs I've seen, £20 all year round if you're anywhere near any of their branches:

CAMBRIDGE
COVENTRY
LEICESTER
NORTHAMPTON
NORWICH
PETERBOROUGH
WISBECH

Also I've found them the cheapest on proper servicing (most places don't actually do manufacturer approved servicing specific to your mileage and age of car, just a canned service that can void warranty)

as said many times before go to a council one then you're less likely to get ripped off with dubious failures?

Council ones charge £50 odd and no free retest. So if there really is something wrong with your car then that's £100 on testing plus the repairs cost! Surely best to give places like this a try and if you feel mugged off then go somewhere else for the work/second opinion. Keep searching for somewhere cheap you know is doing a proper job and you'll save hundreds/thousands in the long term!

why not just go to the council and get a 'proper' test and then have the option of repairs and a cheap retest elsewhere?

council tend to charge £38 .

What is the average hourly rate at the garage ? What is the average time needed to carry out MOT test ? If any place offers £20 test(with all advertising included) they will look for extra income, simple... Only small trusted local garage is the place to go for MOT test, avoid all chain garages

Here's an idea.

People actually know what their car is and how it works before getting an MOT so you don't get mugged off.

My garage know I work on my own car, hence they have NO reason to fail it on rubbish.

You get what you deserve IMO.
