These are a major cause of house fires and serious burn injuries. I implore you all to get an electric deep fat fryer instead. It will only cost about 15 to 20 pounds, but it will never catch on fire.

I thought these were banned? If not they should be.

rubbish, electric ones spit a load of fat at you and are also very dodgy in terms of breaking

How exactly do they catch fire if your using it on an electric hob surely it can't? Would think it's a cases of don't use on a gas hob?

I need a chip pan for auberine/onion bhajis. Just for occasional use - no chips (well maybe after a few pints). Seriously, why would you leave a chip pan on it's own! We have gas cooker anyway and I am always burning myself.
Hot from me I am ordering it. No room for a deep fat fryer - have every other gadget going

Copied off Wikipedia:-
Chip pans are well known for being a fire hazard. In the UK, chip pan fires are the largest cause of fire-related injuries in the home, such that several local fire brigades have offered a "chip pan amnesty", trading old chip pans for a deep fryer.
By comparison, electric deep fryers feature circuitry and design features (such as thermostat-controlled internal heating elements) that prevent the oil from being heated to the point of ignition. Boil-overs and splattering can still occur for the usual reasons, but the fire danger is largely eliminated.
Chip pans are the most common cause of house fires in the United Kingdom, with around 12,000 chip pan fires every year, with 1,100 chip fires being considered serious. These fires result in over 4,600 injuries, and 50 deaths per year. British Fire Brigades frequently issue warnings and advice, urging households to switch to a safer means of cooking chips, and advising that unless the fire is easily contained to leave the fire to the emergency services.

Now wait for the next "chip pan amnesty" and hand these things in. You have been warned.
