Not sure why anybody would vote this cold - perfect for anyone going on holiday to the US, especially at this price. Rated Hot.

Good point! Scared to think what a standard UK tarriff would rack up if you left it sending and receiving data using this. Am presuming that it would be using data as well as 3GS GPS to pinpoint you?
#4
If it simply uses GPS then this is really a bargain.

the "live" bit in the title shows it needs an internet connection to function correctly - a UK iphone roaming in the states... hmmm..... very very very very very very costly!

not so much of a bargain....
#8
Just turn data off. It will still work.

Not sure why it is called Live but is definitely offline. Quote:

hence i mentioned "to function correctly" it will still connect to the internet, bringing up extra roaming charges while abroad - resulting in a very large data bill on your return to the UK......

If you don't want to use "live" features such as traffic etc, you can just turn them off and use it as a fully offline sat-nav. No roaming charges if you just check the settings.

It's a great price for a one-off trip to the USA on holiday.

Used this last year (bought at £29.00) to drive from Phoenix to Las Vegas, then to LA & finally to San Diego.

Worked well, take a window mount to make sure it gets a great signal.

As said above turn off data roaming so no data charges, all maps are on the phone so worked great.

Voted Hot.

What is making you so sure, i want to know! You are not doing anything other than misleading everyone from the deal!

"to function correctly"??? Pardon me but, that does that mean? Because in my own experience, it does function pretty correctly without the need of network... not like some other network dependant satnav softwares...

Its a bargain at this price. SatNav is a must in this age, hence the reason why every techy phones coming out with one built in gps. £2.99 for a satnav? You cant go wrong. Hotty hotty hot hot...
#15
this isnt google maps...it downloads the map set on purchase and even if you havent disconnected data services from your handset you can do it from within the software

so just to set the record straight once and for all

IT DOESNT NEED TO DOWNLOAD ANYTHING!

The reason it has "live" in its title should justify the fact that it needs a connection to give you access to all its "live" features, hence I said to function correctly.

I know it downloads the maps onto you iphone, i don't dispute that.

I also said in the first post that it is a good price.

I can just see it now, people will return from a trip to the states, forget to stop the roaming and bang a big bill....... obviously not everyone will get that, but some will, hence i mentioned it.

I think you need to calm down fella, its a good price, a bit pointless unless you are traveling to the states, and hence pointless for anyone over here.

But for those who remember to turn off data roaming, and don't mind loosing the live features, good luck to ya!

Just installed it on my ipad (it is supposed to be compatible with the ipad). When I launvh the programme, I get the autpilot intro page for about 2 seconds before the programme quits and dumps me back onto ipad's desktop. Should I delete and reinstall the app from the ipod (will I be charged another £2.99) or is it the case that the programme will only work if I am on US soil? Confused :(
#18
imho anyone owning an iphone (which i do) should allways turn off data roaming when abroad amazing how many pieces of software are allways trying to go online.
#19
Just jailbreak and get it for free
#20
Scorchio for a decent sat nav...

if you stole every deal on hotukdeals it would all be free, but that would defeat the point wouldnt it

I have the UK edition for Android and to the best of my knowledge it uses no data unless you specifically make use of the "Live" features (I watch my data usage closely as I only get 150MB).

If you are having trouble installing its likely because the installer (on Android at least) is very buggy. Although it doesnt use your connection for routing it does need to download the maps first, so make sure your at home and have a WiFi connection ready. Best rebooting before you install and dont tap the screen whilst its loading something as this caused mine to crash. Post-install however it has worked flawlessly for me with the exception of one crash.

i have used tomtom, copilot and a couple of others on the iphone. copilot always wins for me for full postcode search, safety cameras and overall usability.
#25
Was just looking for a satnav on play.com that includes USA. no need now! Thanks

I thought the GPS on the iphone was A-GPS, i.e. assisted GPS, requiring it to download an up to date satelite map to allow it to pick up a satelite signal correctly (and quickly) , this is all before you use any software ? If You dont use this feature, I thought it took forever to get a signal lock ? The a-gps would require a data connection also.

Not sure if you can switch AGPS off or not, but maybe worth checking. ?

Seems good enough to me software app wise.
#27
well off to florida in july, cheers to the OP for this
#28
AGPS is a lock speed booster, if data is off it just does it normally and is still reasonably quick.
#29
I recently used this on a trip to the states. App was free then and gave 30days free trial before you had to pay for maps. Worked well.

A-GPS uses a few kilbobytes and reduces satellite acquisition times from a cold start by a few seconds. It's a tiny amount of data and even if you don't download it, it doesn't matter.

CoPilot branding this app, "LIVE" is a misnomer that I'm sure they probably regret. In terms of what you'll be missing out on by not using a live internet connection, it's not much, just live traffic, local petrol prices, local search, weather and a friend-finding feature. All the navigation, including a huge POI database are stored on the device.

I suspect anyone who uses a Smartphone is already aware of foreign data roaming charges and will be switching off data while abroad anyway, so there's nothing specific about CoPilot that will use any more data than any other iPhone application.

Hot.

Great find, OP. Heat and rep - I just downloaded it.

The North America one, including Canada, is £11.99, which is also a great deal compared with Tom Tom and other satnav apps. But if you get this, it says you can add Canada maps for £7.49, which would be cheaper...although I cannot see where you access those. Not in the iTunes app store as far as I can see.

For anyone visiting the US even once, this is an absolute steal. As previous posters have said, just make sure you switch off your roaming. You should do that anyway whenever you are travelling with an iPhone or other smartphone. And having bought the Australia and NZ CoPilot version and used it on a three-week trip to NZ in March/April I can confirm it does work with roaming switched off so you do not need to be connected to the internet.
#32
This is an excellent price, even if you'll only use it for a week or three..

All those harping on about data roaming - it is disabled by default on the iPhone so unless someone specifically turns it on, they should have no unexpected data charges :)
#33
Why there is always discount for the iPhone platform but non for the Android phones? Unfair!

Off to Orlando in July and have been holding off the satnavs looking for a price drop. Just what the doctor ordered, thanks so much op this is perfect. A satnav for the price of a pint man i love my iphone.

Go this on my smartphone, very good. No iPhone yet, hoping to get a version 4 so ordered this hoping it will be patched for that!

I paid around £60 for the Euro maps on Android and... being generous... £2.99 is about all its worth. Bad routing (my girlfriend saved an hour and a quarter on one trip by... yes... following roadsigns!), bad UI, bad performance. I was very disappointed. I wish I took my old WinMo with TomTom on it... never let me down.

Still for £2.99 its a handy backup and would get it just in case.

Only the 3G model, the Wifi version uses hotspot locations.

For those that are installing on the iPad, I just received a mail from the Copilot folks. Hope it helps:

"Hello,

Thank you for choosing the CoPilot Live USA GPS Navigation app. We are aware that some customers have experienced a software crash issue when trying to run the app on an iPad.

We have submitted an app update to Apple which will fix this issue, and it will be available as soon as it is approved by Apple. iPad customers will then be able to install and run the app.

We would like to apologize to iPad customers for any inconvenience caused and we hope that the update will be approved very shortly.

Best regards,

The CoPilot Live team"

NDrive for UK is only £4.99.

+1 for NDrive.
I got this last week, and gave my GF my TomTom its that good. Plus I dont need the cables in the car, and dont need to rub the TomTom "circle" off my window because of thieves. Just prop my iPhone up near my radio. Love it.
