Seems a good deal to me. the i3 530 is the intel chipset that has the graphics built in which is why there is no graphics card mentioned.

It is dual core (hyperthreaded) so will appear as 4 processors in Windows 7 for example.

You have to ignore this part of their description

The core i3 doesn't have turbo boost as this implies... but it does have very good energy efficiency apparently, plus add in the fact that it has a GPU built in makes this a great buy and is very capable of being overclocked to around 4Ghz per core with little effort and no extra hardware required.
Been thinking about getting one of these for my sister as her old comp is on it's way out now.

[edit] And yes it doesn't come with an OS, but for me that is a plus as it also means no bloatware/trial software that they like to include.... unless you have windows apps that can't run in WINE i'd opt for either ubuntu 9.10 or fedora 12, even my sister can get along with using either of those after I've installed and set it up for her, but admittedly she mainly uses her comp for internet anyway, lol

cold, the processor, ram and case are the only good things about it!
#5
what would be a good gpu/psu for this machine, and what is the max ram it'll take?

thanx for posting.

Ok, I have just realised that with an i 3 processor you dont need a graphics card, but how does this compare to the ati 4850?

How on earth did they managed to get 3gigs in two slots? Last time I checked, 1.5gig sticks of RAM didn't exist.

A 1 gig stick then a 2 gig stick ;-)

LOL - I'm still amazed that some people think they need the exact same amount of RAM in both slots.... although that was true with some motherboards back a few years I seem to remember.

As for how the on chip GPU compares to a 4850, I don't think it will be favourable at all for gaming if you want high FPS, but as an all rounder it should be pretty good.
Here's a review on the i3-530 if you wanna take a look

[edit] just clarifying here, but if you want to run in dual channel mode then they should be matched pairs, but haven't noticed much difference personally between running in dual channel mode and single channel mode.
