This is 'PREMIUM' desktop memory - not the standard Kingston/Crucial that's posted sometimes.

nice - I bought this with the first Google Checkout offer and it has been great - tempted to get more to boost up to 4GB ....
#4
of course depending upon your o/s you may have issues addressing more than 3GB - not going to start explaining it all here but just a quick heads up to do some research before you buy

I am using Vista Home Premium with 3GB so adding a 4th (removing the old Dell 2x512) would make a difference I would have thought.

I think you need to be running the x64 bit version of Vista as the x32 bit one only accepts up to 3 gigs.

Exactly - x32 can address up to 4GB but for techie reasons you can only use just over 3 - not going to go into it all here just search on google

But if you have 3GB on a home desktop machine why would a normal user want any more ? - OK if you are running business apps or virtual machines but other than that ?

I am running Virtual Machines so they slow the PC down and have chatted to Dell who say that you can get all of the 4GB working with the x32 bit ... confused as some sites say you can't .. if not has anyone upgraded their PC to x64 in an Inspiron 530 (Intel 4300 1.8GHz) and been able to use the full 4GB ? AND are ALL drivers available ?

I dont think its possible, if you find out how to overcome it let us know but the majority of people say you cant run 4Gb on a 32 bit system.

The hardware in the system is reserving the address space.
Since 32-bit processors are limited to 4 gig of address space, hardware
that requries addressing (like video cards or other devices including PCI)
has to reserve some of the address space, thus limiting the amount of RAM
that is available to Windows. Windows is not reserving that memory, the
hardware in the system is reserving that space. Since there is a
limitation of 4 gig of address space and there is overlap, the amount of
RAM that can be addressed is reduced by the amount of address space the
hardware requests.
