To be fair it's more about the marketing. That's what you're paying for when it comes to 'gaming' peripherals ;)

Have you ever used a Mechanical keyboard?

If you are looking for a cheap keyboard this one is only £13.25:- https://www.amazon.co.uk/TeckNet-X300-Multimedia-Entertainment-Water-Resistant/dp/B001B2T3SG/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1484426225&sr=8-5&keywords=tecknet+keyboard

It is used but also water resistant so I'm sure any stains could be washed off, what the worst that could have happened to it?

That isn't always true, specifically when talking about mechanical keyboards. The model in this deal has german Cherry MX red switches fitted with red backlighting, the switches themselves cost upto £1 each. With 104 keys on a standard size keyboard, that's £100 in parts already just for the switches.

Mechanical keyboards are premium products, it's like driving a Ferrari, you don't need one, but it definitely feels different when it's in your hand (specially those sporting premium switches).

Just for clarity this keyboard has the Cherry MX Speed and not Red switches. Slightly different version with less effort required to press. The description of the item is slightly misleading (this is from Amazon and not the OP).

Would be good to also clear up the colour of the backlighting, is it red or rgb?

Amazing keyboard. Worth the price if you're a gamer and very pleasant to type on too. I love the lava look and being able to turn LED lighting on/off for individual keys is great when gaming in low light.

Just checked myself. It's not RGB (which is £160!)

They are about looks for some people, those little brushed metal Apple keyboards aren't very ergonomic, nor do they have mechanical keys, but they do look good... which seems to be the preference of most Apple consumers.
