    1kW lol

I hate to imagine what our leccy bill would be like if my PC ran anywhere near even half that.

+1 for corsair PSUs though, but I imagine most people would do fine with a much smaller one!

That would be true however in this case the lower watts you go the higher the price e.g.

I managed to get it for £128 even that it only lasted for like 10min very good price . My motherboard should be shipped today.

Very good price for this power supply. But even for the Premium motherboard i dont think it is neccesary so much power. A 650w or 750w should do the job.

1000W+ is vital for a tri/quad GPU setup.

A single high end card can easily run BF3 at ultra

I'm no electrician but I'm pretty sure it doesn't actually use that much. It only uses as much as it needs, which varies, it's not just going to be pulling 1000w as long as it stays on. Correct me as I could be wrong? But I've always assumed this.

I'm using an alpine 650w power supply for 1 year and it hasn't failed on me yet, it only cost me £15 :)

I am an electrician and you are spot on. You can only use what the components are pulling.

Decent PSU which would benefit high-end pc's.

Thats a cheap PSU and when they blow they can and do take components out, you should never use a cheap PSU its the heart of your machine and its nowhere near 650watts more like 350w and that would be pushing it. The manufacturers always put stupid ratings to draw suckers in. It doesn't even have a 8pin ATX power connector which all new decent boards have. If you have a cheap low spec machine then it maybe fine although i wouldn't use one when for £30 you can get a good 450watt supply that will output what it says and wont kill your mobo when it blows up it will also not cripple your electricity bill. I would bet that if you plugged in a decent GPU that you would have all sorts of problems.

    Specs for the Alpine 650watt
24 pin 4 Pin (12V) 1 x 6 pin PCI-e 4 x Sata 3 x 4 pin 1 x FDD that's a very low count for such a big PSU, ive just bought a 450watt XFX PSU because they come with a 5 year warranty direct with Scan and that has way more connectors than your 650watt, mind you its twice the price and all im using it for is a server in a new build using one of the super cheap AMD quadcore's.

My rig has 2x6870's ( admittidly not high end now, but similar psu req's) 4xhdd,2xssd's, DVD, 3fans , 4 dims & the CPU is overclocked. Runs quite happily on my 550w psu. It is ivy bridge, but still...
Worth calculating before you fork out for 1kw psu. But it IS worth buying a good quality Psu. Corsair, seasonic, Be Quiet! Or Enermax are the best makes.
http://extreme.outervision.com/index.jsp <- Good site to calculate your psu needs.

Remember kids, always buy a 80+ PSU :)
