blimmin expensive for what it is and the capacity. I think its hugely overpriced at RRP to be honest

I appreciate it plays FLAC and lossless but they are HUGE files and it does have a relatively tiny storage and though the write up disses the Creative Zen, though it isnt fully incorporated I can stuff 12 gigs worth of storage into mine for a total of about £58 including card and player.

Enlighten me please... not voted yet...

It is very small capacity for the price, but if you are going for sound quality over capacity then it has to be cowon or sony. creative are only one notch above the ipod in audio quality department.

The D2 isn't really for me (I still have an old x5 that is running great, with rockbox rather than official firmware) but it's a decent player.

The big problem with cowon players is the battery - not user replaceable (officially, although you can change them on some models) and the european support is absolutely non-existent. Make sure you buy a player from a retailer who will be around in 18months, as you won't be able to get anything repaired.

Ok to be fair
1. You can pick the 4gb version (20 pounds less I believe) and get an 8 or a 16g card
2. It has a touch screen with applications to use (paint like software)
3. Very long battery life of 50 hours
4. Comes with an ac adapter unlike the creative (sold separately)
5. Tv out possible with the cowon
6. The 74mW amp can power some nice headphones
7. Many, many different music files supported
8. Low volume on the zen (some people say)
9. Considered one of the best mp3 players for very good sound quality.
(The zen is still a nice mp3 player)

It's 18 months since release and feature-wise this shows. Straight off; for £100+ i'd want more memory - granted upgrading is cheap. As the poster above says, what justifies a price tag nearly double a similar spec Creative Zen player?

Also, personal opinion, and I won't vote hot or cold based on this; This type of device offers very little if anything that the newer touch screen mobiles can output. I can't see the appeal and would rarely use one, but as I say it's just personal opinion.

If you want a different choice you could go for the
Cowon iAudio 7 16GB MP3 Player for £129.00 (before any vouchers or quidco) with a battery life of 60 hours.

Cool, if that's your opinion. Just don't vote cold because for this particular device this is the cheapest price, I don't know if anyone cares but an extra 20 pounds gets the DAB enabled version apparently works very well along with the fm radio (doesn't know about dab radio, is it any good)

To be fair to the chap who talked about the craetive being only just above the ipod.. The last revision Ipods (before this last one) actually took the sound quality up quite a bit and provided gapless for the first time on an ipod... The last sonys were terrible.... I loved my older sonys and liked the last ipod generation but sound quality wise I really like the creative. Sound from portable mp3 players through headphones doesnt get much better once you go above 210 mbps and as stated lossless takes up tons of room. I also need gapless as I'm a prog fan.

I'm not going to vote cold and I thank the opening poster for providing detail on this, but I cant help thinking that an ITOUCH would outstrip it seeing as you can pick up the older generation models brand new at similar prices now...

and honestly... though ITUNES is garbage, the sound quality from the device...well Ipods anyway has had audiphiles stating that even with sound, the new classics and nanos are ahead of the branded competition.

I know Cowan may be an audiophile brand (I dont know...I'm just assuming) but I havent heard of them....

I won't vote it cold because of this mate - I've not seen it cheaper elsewhere and looks to be a good find.

Gedfaz, you are right about the audiophile label (for most people anyway) and I hate itunes. Although he sound of this (just from my experience is brilliant with good files.)
I guess it is like the pan deal a while ago although I will admit not as extreme (down a hundred pounds from rrp but some people voted cold because they didn't use pans / expensive is some peoples eyes for pans).
Like the opinions though, it gives people that drop by alternatives to fit their needs and wants.

I will say this..... Its a good looking thing :)
#12
Yes that THING looks good, sounds good too (videos are good but have to be coded into it, slight annoyance)
#13
if only there was a rockbox port - I don't bother with a player unless it has rockbox. manufacturers firmwares are ALL useless.

Rockbox gives me gapless, crossfade, crossfeed, a decent EQ (for the very few times I need one), cuefile support (very important for mix cd's - gapless mp3 playback isn't perfect).

If only some newer players were supported - 5th gen ipods/sansa e200v1 are the latest. :/

I own a Cowon D2 4gb with DAB. I got mine from SVP when they were in a end of line sale,
I think i paid about £75 with a case.
This has been the best mp3 player I've ever owned, and I've had quite a few
I have a 16gb sd card full of video files, the 4gb internal memory has my audio on it.
I use FabDVD to encode the video.
Play are selling 16gb cards for £17.
I use the DAB radio far more than I thought I would, sounds much clearer were I live than the fm radio, because of the number of pirate radio stations broadcasting on fm.
Mine is now about 9 months old & the battery sill lasts a very long time.
I use it every day, for both audio & video, plus of course the DAB radio.
I have recommended this player to many family & friends, those that have got one have been very happy with it.
I did upgrade the earphones because I would rather use ear canal type earphones, so I'm using a set of Sennheiser CX500 earphones. (very good too)
If and when my player dies, I will make Cowon my first choice for a replacement.
#15
You lucky git (jealous rant) .
So you can recommend the sound quality, also are those headphones any good (need to find a pair of headphones for on the go)
#16
I really couldn't get on with the earphones it came with, but that's me.
My sister got one & loves the earphones it came with.
The sound quality is the best I've ever heard on an MP3 player, bar none.
Yes I would recommend the Sennheiser CX500's but they are not cheap. Just looked around for prices, the best i could find at the moment was £15 on ebay, but you are taking a chance buying earphones from there.
The Sennheisers are £45 at play.com, £43 at dab.com

I really believe unless someone posts a cheaper price they should not vote or vote hot
They shouldn't be voting cold with this the cheapest price for this product.

I've had my 4 gig D2 since they were released (year and a half now?) and still wouldn't choose another over it.
I was fairly sceptical about the touchscreen and user interface before purchase but liked the sound, I was soon a total convert.
Sound quality is superb and is only beaten by some very recent Sonys IMHO.
I don't use the video capability's often but to my amazement I've read about 8 or 10 text books on it ( the longest being Gravity's Rainbow!), the bookmarking facilitys (both text and audio) are brilliant! I've had dozens of both going at the same time and usually am reading around 4 books on it at a time.
The unit is sturdy and a simple screen protector has kept my touchscreen perfect despite heavy usage.
The BIG pluses for me are:
Sound quality (get a decent pair of IEM's, I got UE pro 5's-worth it, a cheaper option which I also favour is Jaben networks Crossroads mylar-one bijou 3)

Storage capacity (recently got a 16gig SD card for £17, http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/254679/transcend-secure-digital-card-sdhc-/ FLAC's galore!,thanks amibees!)

Battery life ( SIMPLY SUPERB, even now)

Durability (I'm pretty careless and have dropped my D2 more times than I can remember)
Codec compatibility ( LOTS but I tend mostly to stick to lossless formats like FLAC and OGG)

Oh and SOUND QUALITY, just take your earphones + some music files to a retailer like Advanced mp3 who will allow you to compare players, don't listen to people who clearly haven't tried this, TRUST YOUR OWN EARS.
My next mp3 player will almost certainly be a COWON (eventually, technology does march on after all)
Enough evangelising
Voted hot.

COWON are known for build quality and sound quality (by the people that know about the brand)
#20
To be fair though if you aren't very inserted in sound sound quality and you could accept the reduced durability, battery life, non intergraded sd capability and touch screen the creative zen would be a much better mp3 player for your needs.
#21
I own a Cowon A2- a multimedia player- and the sound is SUPERB!! It is much better than the ipod. I was quite blown away with the sound quality.
#22
With the vold cotes it seems very few people has actually used these

It's people reading "MP3 8GB £127 made by 'not Apple'" voting cold before even opening the thread. Annoying isn't it?

Quite a few excellent deals are going cold because they are niche products.

Edit:Post a mediocre DVD for £4.68 reduced from £5.79 if you want some heat. In fact, I'll chuck ya some anyway.
