A stellar cast collides haphazardly in this insightfully written roundelay of racism, rage, and redemption which takes place over the course of one day in LA and involves a circus of cops, robbers, and civilians. A detective with a heroin addict mother and criminal brother investigates the shooting of a black cop by a white one. Two hoodlums jack the car of the District Attorney and his angry, racist wife. Terrence Howard and Thandie Newton play an upper-class African American couple harassed by a racist cop. And the chaos continues, with other roles played by Tony Danza, Michael Pena, and Jennifer Esposito. A propulsive Mark Isham score keeps the disparate narrative threads electrified from the get-go; when they finally connect, the results are explosive and beautiful. Everything is tied together with tight editing and artistic shots of car headlights cutting through dense morning smog. Writer-director Paul Haggis' (writer of 'Million Dollar Baby') Los Angeles is a world of alienated people struggling to connect across vast barriers of language, class, and culture; that they manage to do so is testament to their depth as characters more than some trite message of brotherly love. There are no easy answers, but this film is tough, intelligent, and gutsy enough to find some anyway; and for that it's a winner.

Were you expecting a remake of the 1996 erotic thriller or something?

Loved this film, really, really good.

Good God - This is probably one of my favourite films ever!

A healthy 8.1 on IMDB.

Oh well, it would be a boring world if we all liked the same things!

I agree. IMO a dull movie. Apologies to all you intellectuals who found the jumbled narrative fascinating rather than off-putting.

I've got to agree with the 'Thumbs-down' crowd. I thought it would be a good movie but it really wasn't. Completely unrealistic on nearly every level. Characters would have a run-in with someone and the next day they'd have another run-in with the same people. Come on! L.A. is a rather large city with what, 11 million people or so? What did Sandra Bullock's character have to do with anything? The way the characters act and react, the cop picking up the hitchhiker, the guy waving the gun around in front of the cops... nonsense. Sure, there's a bunch of unrelated people who all interact in the movie, great, so what? Let me take you back a few years earlier, when a simple drunk crop-duster pilot, an Airforce pilot, and a computer geek team up to save the planet from a bunch of killer aliens. That's right, I'm talking about Independence Day. "Hello boys! I'm BAAAAACK!!!" Classic. Now that's how it's done. It's like Crash but on an inter-planetary scale (but with interesting characters, a fast-moving interesting plot, witty catch phrases, and well, it's a hellova lot better than Crash). It's only £3. Buy it if you want. It's good for the economy.

I listened to that too

I think this is probably one of the best films in the past few years, the reviews would agree :-)

Thrasher: It doesn't claim that this happens every day, that would be silly. It is just saying what COULD happen. That's the point in the film the characters all 'Crash' together. (infact the police officer even explains it in the film)
As I remember Sandra Bullocks character was just stereotyping racism on people working for her then without wanting to spoil it she sees shes been an idiot later on.

But then you are suggesting Independance Day is a better alternative so nevermind..

lol
The only toss here is what is coming out of your mouth!!
O.K it might not have been your cup of tea but to say it's rubbish is absurd and just makes you look like a complete idiot tbh!!
Was it the subject matter that bothered you so severely?
If your gonna criticise the film at least back it up with some reasons why, otherwise people like me might think your just another pathetic bigot!?!?!

Personally I think the film is a masterpiece and one of the best films I have seen in my life!
