Had one of these for a few months. Great little player. The X-Fi only seems to sound good on poorly encoded MP3's. A decent rip at 192 doesnt need any of the X-Fi settings at all.

I paid £99 for mine so this is a bargain :)

If anyone is interested in the
SONY NWZ-A729 16GB for £69.99

I had the 16GB version of this - picked it up for £105 not too long back. Recently sold it as I got an iphone and I must admit the sound quality is miles better on the X-Fi (even without the settings on) - but I only use it occasionally so it doesnt bother me.

Basically what Im saying is the sound quality from this unit is excellent.

If you can live without the expansion SD card slot (which doesn't integrate mp3s into your flash memory library) then the build and the sound quality and headphones supplied with the Sony unit advertised above from Argos clearance on Ebay is far the better buy in my opinion albeit its a tenner more...after owning previous incarnations of Creative MP3s and Sony, I find that Sony players are far better constructed and better sounding.
#6
I have the non x-fi version of this, it is the best portable mp3 player that I have ever used. (for mp3's anyway).

I have an 8gb ipod touch 2nd gen and sony NWZ-S616F also.

It's tiny, battery lasts ages, sounds fantastic (I use sennheiser headphones) and has an sd expansion slot (awesome).

It uses a std mini usb cable unlike the sony and apple which cost a few quid to replace.
#7
seems like a good price but will keep my mp3 player for the time being
#8
you forgot to mention the best bit.

you can drag and drop files straight onto it in windows, no itunes messing around and syncing etc.

I have just sold my ipod 3rd gen nano, even with the headphones supplied with this its sounds fantastic and way better then my ipod.

I managed to bag one from currys...

I bought this player on tuesday after being recommended by HUKD user babysumo and i have to admit its one of the best mp3 player i have bought. Iv bought other creative and sony mp3 players, but this is the best so far.

The bundled earphone is superb, aswell as the video playback along with the mp3 playback. Simple drag and drop, so no faffing about using a software to upload songs. Battery life is great as i used it today from 10am - 8pm non-stop at work, to listen to my fave songs via the built-in speaker (which is great). The software supplied makes video converting and transferring to the player effortless.

You can then purchase a compatible SDHC card of upto 32gb afterwards and it will still cost cheaper than the highest capacity ipod touch.

Yup its nationwide. Its on their website aswell as Currys. I bought my one from the Mile End Road, London branch.
#12
Yes it is nationwide... and i got it from currys

Only downside with 8GB is .... it is without Wi-Fi. The 16gb and 32gb models both have Wi-Fi...
Strange... isnt it?

The wi-fi isnt a big loss - its only used to stream music and copy files across (very slowly) - I used it the day I got mine and then never used it again in the following 6 months.

Is it drag and drop interface ? had a sony before but hated sonic stage :(
#24
I have the 16gb x-fi and it beats the sony and ipod by a country mile for sound quality, and a great price imho.
Get one & you won't be dissapointed.

Sony's are always using the SonicStage software for song uploads.

I have the S version of this mp3 player and the sound quality is amazing. It does not use Sonicstage, and battery life is massive whilst the player is so slim and small. Similar to my W890i.... The earphones you get with it are premium class as well and sound great.... Definitely recommended for £69.99 and with 16GB memory.... Hands down they beat the current gen nano's on sound, even my cousin was amazed when I let him listen to it on the day he got his nano! [I know it was mean]
#29
Shame I can't create a separate thread for the sony mp3 player.
#30

Trust me you won't regret it, I have an older Sony NWZ-A818 slightly smaller screen than that bargain on Ebay....those headphones alone supplied with that model (and mine) are worth £30 and sound top notch (far better than headphones supplied with Creative) the build quality of Sony MP3 players is top notch compared to Creative (I have taken apart Creative players poor build quality and cheaper plastics)

There is a review of it here, http://www.anythingbutipod.com/archives/2008/07/creative-zen-xfi-review.phpand even a taking apart of the unit, http://www.anythingbutipod.com/archives/2008/07/creative-zen-xfi-disassembled.php whilst it is slightly better built than the original Zen, its still not the best, not knocking it for the price, personally though after fixing Creative Players and knowing the sub par build quality (no frame support struts around LCD leading to many a cracked screen), Sony win hands down, especially as in recent years they have ditched sonic stage.

For amount of features the Creative wins hands down, for pure sound quality and a stylish build and interface the Sony units win hands down.
