Jump to unread Post a CommentI'd like a 256Gb for my SATA II lappy, but am caught in indecision wondering if the prices will fall even further from this seemingly excellent price of £166.98.
btw, here's a link to a review of the SATA III M4 installed in a SATA II lappy (which is my configuration): http://www.mikewilson.cc/2011/11/07/crucial-m4-256gb-ssd-review-on-sata-2/
Maybe I need to think about upgrading my lappy (Acer Aspire 5742 i3-370M) to a SATA III supporting one before upgrading my hard drive to a SATA III SSD. Thoughts?
Only one: Lappy.
I'm still on Firmware 0009 for my 128GB model and have been reading about the 5000 hour bug... will update the firmware of course, but just interested to see how long my SSD has been going since installation.
Thanks in advance for any I.T. support offered...
i read something about TRIM not functional if you have one of these SSDs in a RAID setup..so am i better off waiting for the newer version m5 whatever it will be called?
There is a brief comment about the perils of RAIDing these Marvell based drives here: TomsHardware Marvell based SSD review
That page explains one of the downfalls, and finishes with the paragraph quoted below...

I don't think there is a way to actually check it but if you use it for 10 hours a day, every day you have about a year and a half before you hit 5,000 hours.
I know it's got slightly less storage space, but it seems to have double the write speed

The difference in write speed you won't notice. I'm not a fan of those sandforce based controllers since the reliability issues that plagued the OCZ Vertex 3 etc.

Cool, didn't know that.
Northamber are a big distributor - Dabs probably had them drop-ship it to you.

It's debatable whether they're the biggest or the oldest, though they've certainly been around for a long time. I remember buying stuff from David Atherton (the DA in Dabs) himself a couple of decades back at various computer shows, back when they were known as Dabs Press.
Since then DA has sold Dabs to BT (which is a minus for Dabs as far as I'm concerned, not being a fan of monopolistic incumbent ex-state organisations) and DA seems to have gone off the rails a bit himself, if I recall correctly various tabloid stories from a few years back.
I used to use Dabs a lot, but have fallen in love with Amazon and ebuyer since they arrived on the scene - both of whom I'd wager give Dabs a good run for their money in terms of size, and certainly service - Dabs deliveries always seem to be quoted in terms of 1-3 days - why they're unable to offer next day for the kinds of things that I might buy is quite beyond me.

Correct, but it was you who said it was, not anyone else!
