Wonder what the returns policy is on a formatted SSD?
Thought there might be a noticeable increase in performance from a Fusion Drive with a 120GB Samsung EVO 840 and Western Digital Scorpio Black 320gb but really can't tell the difference.
Don't get me wrong - write speeds are a LOT faster but real world experience/use isn't that noticeable...

It says they come with a 1 year warranty so i would assume you can return it like any other SSD they sell.

Matt if you find another code would you mind pm'ing me lol, I have tried every combination :)
To be honest, I can't see that I'd be searching for another code without intending to use it. That said, if for whatever reason I do end up with an unused, valid code I'll drop you a PM. :)

Well that was quick, mine arrived this morning via RM 1st Class and I only opted for the free postage option.

The drive seems to be working fine and is currently in the process of having ~500GB of stuff from its mechanical predecessor copied to it.
Still trying to guess a code :)

This or Samsung 750 EVO?

What's the price diff?

Expect most would say Evo. I think Samsung are being too clever... I'd rather have a simpler controller so I'm more likely to get Windows to run RAID properly... Having said that, as boot-drive, Evo prolly...

yeah i am on sata 2 so cant get that but the 4k read/write is definitely hell of a lot higher than mine
could that just be ahci or have i made a mess of it? (and how!?)
its about 2 times my speed so should that not mean that things load twice as fast as mine? which would still be a few seconds which doesn't go with my (probably wrong) understanding of things
(lightroom was a fresh install with no catalogue yet)

it says 238gb btw whilst mine only says 237gb too

anyone offer some advice?
couple of days ago i installed a 256gb mx100 in my win7 laptop
ahci isn't supported so cant use that, trim i cant seem to access the setting for (admin rights i presume but controller does garbage collection anyway? assume i can fix this later)

i halfassed the install, i have since read about aligning the drive and initialising it neither of which i did
am i right in thinking that as its being used then it was initialised automatically? and how important is aligning?

anyway as for performance, boots alot faster but then the drive had a clean install and fairly empty so to be expected.
crystaldiskmark says its alot faster but i am not getting 'instant' loads with stuff as people go on about. chrome take about 2-3 secs to load up tot he point tab names are there and lightroom is faster but still 5-6 seconds.
am i doing something wrong or unrealistic expectations?

here is the bench, cheers!

Would I be able to clone my hdd and switch it with this without having to reinstall windows? my old laptop is running slow but it has nothing apart from windows 8 on it which will fit easily onto a 128gb ssd I'd imagine so can I clone it straight across or would I have to do anything to the files to make it work properly?

Over the past 12months I have gradually replaced my 3 laptops HDD with SSD - each one was running Windows 7. All migrated Ok - one laptop needed two attempts - not sure why the first attempt failed. Guy at work just migrated his Windows 7 desktop PC to an SSD he got during the Amazon Black Friday sale - he said it went smoothly.

As long you dont accidentally pick the wrong source and target drive, you are not going to mess up you existing HDD.

There are a bunch of free migration tools out there - I have used Macrium and Easeus, guy at work used Acronis.

EDIT: Actually did 4 migrations - as I replaced my main laptop a few months ago.

Just remembered: The one area you may have difficulty is if your current HDD is not using AHCI mode in the BIOS and you need to switch to AHCI. Check you current BIOS settings and if your HDD is already set to use AHCI then you dont need to worry.

Just wanted to say thanks for the comment, my SSD arrived today and I successfully installed it this evening with generally little trouble, I used easeus and it worked perfectly with everything booting up as it should so once again thank you!
Ordered two of these and they've just arrived - great service!!

****, mine arrived today, DOA (M500 240Gb)

Installed many computer parts before?
Hey guys, i want to buy a M550 SSD but i need to clone everything from my existing drive, does all the needed software and parts come with the SSD or do i have to buy it separately ?
Aph3x
Am not sure what you are getting at, how would splitting the drive help with installing games/apps ?
I was not sugesting that they don't use the rest of the SSD. I made a comment saying that there is no point partitioning SSD's for cloning reasons in normal use and that with current clone software we have even if the drive is a 256GB drive if there is only 40GB of data in use that is what would be copied.

I from my own point of view don't see the reason to partition up a SSD; a HDD i would have in the past but with the size's we have with SSD's there isn't any point to this.

In the olden days the clone software we had would make a 1:1 copy of every sector on the hdd so back then having a small boot partition helped with the cloning process. Once we got software that used smart sector copying (only copying the sectors with data in it) it reduced the image file to the same size that the data was and thus imho reduced the need to partition drives up.

Most normal users don't understand what a drive letter is so what makes you think they can wrap their heads round partitions, file systems and so on, keep it simple for them the scope for getting it wrong is too large and not worth the risk.

Fine, if you don't understand and think it's simpler to keep it as one partition, do that. I certainly wouldn't want you to do anything that you don't understand.

Looking to put MX100 256gb, via flubit, in my MSi CR630. Either to replace the HDD and then put the HDD in the DVD drive or just straight into the DVD drive.

Can anyone suggest any caddies please, I have tried to find one but keep drawing a blank. The current DVD drive is a 'slimtype bd e ds4e1s optical drive'.

The other alternative is to just have the HDD as an external as and when needed, don't want to run the SSD as external as only USB2.0. Can anyone suggest a decent, robust and preferably cheap caddy please.

Cheers!

If the machines you have had esata ports you could use a esata caddy

Thanks, was going to look for a USB one but I do have an esata port. After a quick google I see the esata is quicker and more reliable so will have a shop around for an esata caddy. Any suggestions please?

Trail and error am afraid. What works for my setup might not work the same way on yours and i would be hesitent to make a recomendation based on my past experiance of USB2/USB3 Caddies / Hubs and so on - they are very hit and miss.

HOT. these are best suited for laptops. Currently have a dell m4500 which i had to remove my DVD drive to put in a normal SSD.(mSata prices where an absolute con at that time) But now if you have a mSATA port on your laptop , your better off going for this and keeping your optical drive, or better yet like me, having 2 SSD for increased capacity.( i dont use my optical drive ).
Neanderthal
my PC's motherboard has a socket on it for one of these. Is there any advantage of getting on of these that connects direct to the motherboard over a normal one that connects via a cable?

If you're running out of drive bays, then yea - otherwise no.

This is perfect for laptops and ultrabooks; my ultrabook is running a 256GB mSATA SSD and is using the freed up drive slot for a 2TB drive. That's more than most desktops and it's really hard to get any laptop to match the speed/storage without using mSATA.

Hi

Just bought 2 x 4GB, Ballistix 240-pin DIMM, DDR3 PC3-12800 memory modules for £47.98 delivered, hoping that they are compatible with my HP Microserver as the specs are ok apart from Non ECC and they physically fit as I have checked the height etc.

Qty: 2 BLT4G3D1608ET3LX0CEU
Part Number: BLT4G3D1608ET3LX0CEU
Price: 19.99
Description: 4GB, Ballistix 240-pin DIMM
Line total: 39.98

Partial returns on volume discount purchases may result in loss of volume discount.
Line item subtotal: 39.98

Approximate tax: 8.00
Shipping charges: Royal Mail Free Shipping (3-5 working days) 0
Estimated order subtotal: 47.98

Has anyone fitted Non ECC to their HP Microserver, obliviously the ECC version is better but there are no discounts on the ECC memory as far as I can tell Ballistic do not make ECC memory?

Thanks OP

Is it screwed to the chassis properly?
it is a dell inspirion laptop and after a few min struugle (thinner thad hdd)I got it to connect and it is just held in by two screws at the side.

Sounds like it is literally rattling around inside then. SSD has no moving parts so the only noise would be the drive moving.

ordered loads of stuff from ebuyer and returned a few things via their rma system like pressure washers n freeview boxes.never had a problem ever. and unlike amazon they are british and do pay tax.
Ebuyer customer service is ..not to give any help if they can help it. Anything more than a few months old and within warranty, sorry you've used it so we are going to deduct a percentage. Trading standards generally not a lot of help, factor in time and cost of small claims, easier to go elsewhere.
davidbrent
Whats wrong with ebuyer, out of interest? Back when I was building my PC (admittedly a few years ago), that site was great.

Edit - Google shows some reports of bad customer service - is it that bad now?
They're great up until something goes wrong, then they try anything they can not to refund/replace. In my case on a external hard drive that failed after 2 months they firstly refused to accept it was their responsibility and kept telling me to go to the manufacturer, then tried to give me a partial refund, and then finally just making me pay for return insured postage. It was a lot more hassle then you'd expect from any other company though.

Whats wrong with ebuyer, out of interest? Back when I was building my PC (admittedly a few years ago), that site was great.

Edit - Google shows some reports of bad customer service - is it that bad now?
Took about 2 months for them to refund me for a motherboard they delivered dead.

I've returned a few items to Crucial in the past (because of my mistake in ordering), and it's worth noting that their service is very good, even when it's the customer's fault.
