Bear in mind the price is from £59 per night which includes flights to Dubai and return from Shanghai (so in reality probably it probably works out at about £42 per night!) for all accommodation, food…

The Maitre D was unconcerned about seating me with other passengers who did not speak any english, so no conversation over most meals.

This is the deal clincher for me, I hate having to make small talk over dinner with some prat from back home X)
I sailed on the exact same ship - MSC Liraca in March 2012. I have done a number of cruises with a lot of different cruise lines. I would not choose to sail with MSC again.
I flew into Abu Dhabi and it was only when I reached the port they told me the ship was still in Dubai, so lots of hanging around after a long flight for another transfer.
Be prepared for endless announcements to cover all the different nationalities on board (usually around six lots of announcements - this takes up a lot of time at every show). My itinerary was also a longer itinerary with lots of sea days. It was really disappointing how little was on in the theatre - many nights with no theatre show at all.
The food was nothing special. The Maitre D was unconcerned about seating me with other passengers who did not speak any english, so no conversation over most meals.
The most common word from the staff was No, to even the most simple requests.
Although gratuities are meant to be optional, the management team made it really difficult to speak with the relevant Manager to get gratuities reduced to take account of poor service.
So Yes, that may well explain the high proportion of bad reviews.

With cruises I'm always concerned about what the gratuities situation will be; it seems to vary so much from company to company.

That's something that annoys me also. I've another trip booked for next August which I've prepaid gratuities and prepaid drinks and gratuities (there are no tips to pay on my April trip with Silversea as it's super all inclusive - though Regal are even more inclusive than they are)

Avoid MSC at all costs, and Costa is nearly as bad. We did a similar itinerary earlier this year Dubai to Singapore on Royal Caribbean and you needed a great ship for the amount of sea days, not this tatty pile of junk with the well known service problems/standards of MSC.
From £40K to £130KThis one better?
Silversea is a very nice line indeed.

They are indeed. I'm off on my second trip with them inside a year when I do my Med trip next April.

says 601 now! this looked ideal as we can only go away on the 2nd..
The only problem with DIY flights is that you risk missing the ship so allow plenty of contingency and if possible obtain travel insurance that will reimburse the full consequential losses of a missed connection. Especially given high risk of fog/snow/strikes at London airports in January.
Flights from London to Rome on 2nd Jan return on 12th Jan £167 - £180 per person, so still under £400 but perfect if your already in rome.
Cruise Only. Add your flights and you are around the £700 pp mark. Still good price though for 10 nights!

MSC are good value for money. I got one of the daily express £10 cruises are couple of years back and whilst I don't do the cruise thing the standard; food, accommodation and food was very good.

good deal, but what are the ships like?

At these price I'm not going to have to shovel coal into the engine am I?

No, you will be given a big wooden oar upon boarding and chained to your seat at the side for the duration!

Extremely cheap!

It makes you wonder about the quality of the onboard service, but still a good find for someone wanting to get to South America for peanuts

Looks like the ships go to SA to do 3/4 night booze cruises over the winter.

Rather than sail empty on the TA get people on the ship to spend and pay the tips(crew wages)

The incrimental cost to the cruiseline of a passenger is very low this cost will just about cover those.

MSC do get mixed reviews and are very much a european cruise line so not for every one.

Thanks, but it's handy to know for next year, because they always do a limited amount of these special deals (free kids places) every year when they release the prices for the following year, so it is handy to know for next year as we have about £200 in clubcard tokens, we have been on a few of P&O's Ships & agree, the Oceana is a lovely boat.

vjeffreys;1946961
yes they can only be used with p&o but o be honest if you have to wait for holiday tokens to comehrough then they will sell out of this phase pricing.

Good deal, got me thinking tho, does anyone know would we be able to use Tesco clubcard deals against this, or can we only use them booking direct through P&O, thanks.

brilliant price - voted hot! We're a family of 5 so with supplements or two rooms works out too expensive unfortunately

There are 5 of us to but luckuly the in laws are coming with us so they are having one of the kids with them. We do come up aainst that problem a lt though so you have my sympathy. we both need to find cruise buddies with the same problem so we can put 2 kids in one room lol :-)
