Not sure if you can do this, if successful it brings the cheapest Mac down to £600.

You could but then it will be worth next to nothing after 2 years while a Mac will still have some value when you sell it. Therefore the Mac could well be more cost effective in the long run

Can you name a laptop that has similar specs as a macbook pro? The only one that comes close is the Dell XPS 15 9530, which funny enough costs almost the same as a macbook, and the hardware is riddled with issues.

The reason I'm asking is because I want to buy an ultrabook with a quad core i7 + min 16gb ram and all the ones I've tried so far are rubbish.... so I'm thinking of taking the plunge and getting an MBP. The main reason why I haven't done this yet is because I don't like the idea that nothing can be replaced or upgraded by the user.

Good advice, I've bought 2kg of potatoes instead, now I've got loads of money left over to spend on carrots.

Schenker S413. Basically the same features for roughly 2/3 the price of a 15'' MacBook Pro ;)

I have one of their gaming laptops and they are absolutely amazing for the price (although mine cannot really be considered an ultrabook :P )

And don't forget all the lemons you could buy!

Well I was never an Apple fan, but similar specced Windows machines come in at around the same price and all Ultrabooks now from whichever manufacturer seem to be completely unupgradeable. I bought a Macbook Air and installed Windows on it. The install of Windows on the new Mac is easier than Windows on a Windows laptop. Couldn't be happier!

These are overpriced, always have been. I still want one.

MBP are not really overpriced when compared like for like. If you compare to a cheap plastic windows laptop then yes, they are expensive. Compare to a top brand ultrabook and there's not much in it.
I've recently converted to using a MBP and a iPAD after years of windows devices. Apple are so much better - for me. It's individual taste.

Disappointed....too late for me bought a Lenovo Flex recently...could have got a Mac Air for a bit more but much better quality! Heat added.

Three years ago I'd have said "meh, rather have a ThinkPad". Now I'm not so sure; too many compromises in the last two generations. :(

I guess I'd still rather have a T440. ThinkPad keyboards might not hold a candle to their past generations but they're still the best in the business.

Voted hot anyway. :)
