Ok - this isn't going to be for everyone, but for those of us who picked up bargain Olympus PEN cameras recently this is a fab deal. The Olympus PEN Portrait Kit includes the 40-150mm zoom lens w…

On Ebay/Grey market it tends to be - they often break up these kits.
If you can hold out - use camelcamel to set a price alert to you when it's next reduced. This seems to be getting reduced every few weeks at the moment.

That said £154 is a good price too.

Damn, wish I'd seen this earlier. It's now £154, but I guess that's still a good price. Is the lens even available on it's own for that price?

Totally understand - if it wasn't my birthday next week I'd be in trouble with the Mrs...
Camel Camel alerted me pretty pronto as this reduced so may be worth setting up an alert when you are in the market for one.

Would love to get this, but will have to hold old for now until the next time it, hopefully, gets reduced. Only got my PEN a week ago so I don't think Mrs Mike would be too impressed if I spent almost the same again on a new lens.

I've been looking for one of these for quite a while now, and was going to buy one on eBay secondhand for almost this price.

if it is less for 50 usd I am certain I will get it..:p
usa just did a promotion.....with 80 usd rebate ><
Believe it or not, this is a good price . I have the VF3 not as high a resolution as the VF2 but essential for me to use my EPL1 Olympus camera as i cant focus on the rear screen without my glasses. Its also a better way to shoot with the camera close and not at arms length. (for what its worth).
It is indeed an electronic viewfinder for Olympus micro four thirds cameras. Possibly a niche item, but a hot deal nevertheless.
No, it's a view finder for a camera. A micro 4/3 PEN camera I think but don't hold me to that.
is it like a web cam thingy ??? ;)

Nikon COOLPIX L310 Black 14.1MP, 21x Optical Zoom £112.10 Delivered by Amazon

One of the best cameras in market for budget people like me and no doubt has excellent results. The L310 has a 14 megapixel CCD sensor and 21x optical zoom lens, which is a 35mm equivalent of 25-525…

Got my son the L810 as a christmas parcel....loks great hope it is, thought it would be a better bet than a Fuji or such like.

Nikon COOLPIX L310 Digital Camera Only £116.10 @ Amazon

It's cheaper than at Argos as it is now 129.99 so Amazon is the cheapest right now. Really good camera for the price, but not as much manual controls. Edit : it is also the same price at Jessops…

The spec isn't so great, check other models on Jessops there, Jessops are like 20 pound cheaper than Argos, I know because I had to get new digital camera using gift card from Argos :(. Cf Panasonic DMC-LZ20 129 pound from Jessops, 16MP 21x optical zoom

10% saving is hardly good for a 'refurbished' model from that retailer. I generally don't like refurbs (but make an exception for fuji shop as I've had three good cameras from them).

i take it back.. My mistake... did not spot the refurbished part... Thanks for pointing out

Olympus VF-2 Viewfinder - £157.09 delivered - Amazon

I guess these are reasonably specialist but if you have an Olympus PEN camera I would recommend this highly-regarded viewfinder, especially on a sunny day where the rear display becomes pretty useless…

I'm tempted by this. Of course it's very expensive but for those who say 'just buy a camera with a viewfinder in the first place' I answer that I chose an Olympus XZ-1 because it is just pocketable and it has a f/1.8 - f/4 lens which I don't think was matched by any viewfinder camera of comparable size. Googling, I just found it in stock for £152.37 delivered at Tekshop247.

That's a "hot deal" in my book, it might not be considered necessary or desirable by many on here but if it's the best price that's the name of the game IMO. I have certainly not regretted buying the VF-2, the manual focus assistance is even more impressive in the viewfinder, you only have to read the reviews on Amazon to get a feeling for just how good this is.

I travel a lot for work and wanted the better quality shots without the bulk of a DSLR (I sold all my old NIKON stuff because I hardly ever used it, it was just too big to carry in my hand luggage along with my laptop). I compared the MFT options and chose the EPL because it was a cheaper way in to try the format plus the size of the PENs suits my needs. I choose whether to use the viewfinder or not depending on what I'm shooting or where I am in the same way I choose which lens to carry. I'm now looking out for the best deal on a fisheye, the Samyang is the most likely choice at the moment...
If you want 4/3 format (Olympus/Panasonic) with a viewfinder, you need to get the Panasonic G1/2/3/10. They have a viewfinder and lcd but are a little larger than the EP. For the price of the EP viewfinder you can almost get a second G body. That's what I would do instead.

Mad Dad
I have the EPL-1 too, it's my first MFT camera and I really like it, I have bought a couple extra lenses too so have made a commitment to the type. I know what you mean about the price tho! It took me a few weeks to make my mind up but I figured that I liked the PEN cameras and could use the VF on future "upgrades", and, I'm sure these will always sell pretty well on fleabay if I decide I don't need it anymore...

Yes, I know what you mean re the 'selling on' point. I bet these viewfinders keep their value proportionately better than the cameras!

I am no expert, but I would definitely say you are thinking along the right lines. I use mine for pretty much the same things. The big zoom is not only good for wildlife, but is good for taking natural, unposed, photos of my kids while they are playing without disturbing them. It also gives that nice out of focus background when you do that.

As I said before, I reckon you'd be happy with either the Nikon on or the Fuji. I've had three bridge cameras and surprisingly, the Canon, which was the most expensive, was the only disappointment.

For better low light capability, a CMOS sensor would be better than CCD. Though this may push it beyond your price range?

If you do go for a Fuji, I would avaoid the lower cost S1000 range (S1600, 1800, etc) and the S2000 range (S2950, etc). They are okay, but for just a little more you could get something from the S3000 or S4000 range. They have better optics and feel more solid. They tend to get better reviews.

Hope you enjoy your new camera when you get it.

yeah im not looking too deep into the megapixels, probably not going to print them out. i posted this deal as this was the cheapest i could find and might be buying this in a few weeks time.

but just thought of asking you guys if there are better cameras out there around the same price or cheaper

What do want from it? Do you want to expand beyond auto setting? Big zoom? Will you use it for video? Do you prefer AA batteries or rechargeable Li Ion? Do you mind it being large or do you want something to shove in your pocket?

So many questions. Sorry.

Well im not a photographer or an editor. so im not looking for a high spec one. i need it for family occasions and general photography of people and scenery. i need something for low light and bright light.

im not too bothered about the batteries

and not bothered at all about the size

thanks
Oh, and completely ignore how many megapixels the sensor is. As long as it is 10 or above. No cameras in this range have optics that can produce 16MP images, even of the sensor can.

10MP is ample, unless you plan on printing it the size of a tennis court.
