wow! thats a super sweet setup for the price!
#2
Will this run the latest games and let me do vidoe editing etc?

My PC is 3 years out of date and I am out of touch ;O)
#3
Although not a top spec PC it has a dual core processor, 1GB memory and a decent graphics card so should be fine for lastest games & video editing (http://www.nvidia.com/page/geforce_7300.html)
#4
please don't mind me asking....does this come with monitor?
#5
No, you have to buy the monitor separately
#6
so how does this compare with this?

http://www.comet.co.uk/cometbrowse/product.do?sku=355232

Getting a little confused but still think the acer is a better deal:?

Any opinions before I take the plunge:)
#7
Both have the budget dual core processors from AMD and Pentium

The main difference is a dedicated Graphics card on this one. If you want to play the latest games or 3D graphics go for this. The rest of the specification is similar.

Hi Cheapskate. Well, the Acer has the AMD processor which does get slightly better ratings than the 'old' Intel dual core. But more crucially, the Acer has shared graphics (doesn't say what spec), basically a graphics chip on the mobo that shares system RAM, not ideal, especially for gaming. My money would be on the Cybermaxx, but I'd have to say that if you want a monitor as well, the current Dell promotions take some beating. Just my views, hope it helps. Oh, another thing, don't ever buy anything from Comet, they're a bunch of crooks ;o)

Thanks hittheace!

Picked one of these up for my brother today instore at Toys'R'Us (Stevenage). It was labelled as Medion in the display area (even though it wasn't on display - just a ticket with a few details on). It has Cybermaxx on the front of the case, but has Medion software etc. I think Cybermaxx may be a badge that Medion use for gaming hardware.

I can confirm the graphics card is a nVidia GeForce 7300SE. According to the nVidia website this is the slowest of the set - it goes (from best -> worst):

7300GT > 7300GS > 7300LE > 7300SE

(Source)

Anyone need any more info - just ask!

Wireless networking? No.

Good deal!! Thanks.
Some ref about the GeForce 7300 series:
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/graphics/charts.html
(seems not a powerful card for gaming, but that's already a very very good deal)
(at that price, many other brands are offering Intel graphics only)
#13
I submitted the Acer post actually.... I would go for this Cybermaxx model... It has a separate card and is cheaper.

Hi does anyone know the what the motherboard is on this?

Can it take core 2 duo?

Great price, especially as it has a seperate graphics card.

For anyone wanting to know if this is any good for gaming the answer is a straight forward yes. As pointed out the 7300se is the lowest of the series but I will put everyones mind at ease who don't know much about this sort of thing that it will play absolutely any game that has ever been released on the PC.

Although to get top end graphics you would be looking at spending £200+ on a card alone, but if you have never seen what a £200+ card can do, trust me you will not miss it, games will look very nice on this PC as well. And at this price I would get it over the Acer even though this processor is not as good, I would get it because this is more of a complete system so people will not have to mess about opening things up to fit a graphics card.

Hope this helps.

EDIT:

I have also noticed that this card states (up to 512mb memory), what this means is that it will share a lot of your system memory which is not good, system meory is not good for graphics but at the same time it will be hogging your own memory so you could end up with just over 700mb. I think there may be a way to turn this off in the settings, (it may be called turbo cache or something). I would suggest turning it off and just using the cards dedicated memory. Not sure if it;s possbile but if it is I would do it, 512mb of turbo memory sounds good, but in reality it's not.

Just a little tip for anyone who purchases this machine. :)

It's an MSI mobo. The only thing I saw that looked like a model number was 1996N or N1996 (can't remember which). Looked on the MSI site and couldn't see anything.

Sorry I can't tell you more.

EDIT : from doing a Google on the above - the N1996 looks like a red herring, I think it's on all MSI mobos.

EDIT 2 : Ok, using the serial number on the back of the PC on Medion's website I get a list of drivers, one is a BIOS update for a 'MS7255' mobo. This doesn't appear to be a mobo on MSI's site, but doing a Google on 'MS7255' gets several results from different sources for a 'P4M890M-L' mobo which does exist, here.

In fact the 'CPU Support Status' page has:
Marketing Name - P4M890M-L/IL
MSI Model - MS-7255
The pic and spec look about right and I think it may be the one. I can't be 100% sure though. If it is the one it does appear to support Core 2 Duo - see here

Hi, Am almost certain that Cybermaxx is a brand name that Toys-R-Us use exclusively to sell products made by Medion. Cybermaxx is essentially a Medion brand name.

The mainboard used in this machine (to the best of my knowledge) is an MSI P4M890M-L/IL.

Hi, As far as I'm aware this has a 160Gb 7,200rpm SATA150 Hard Disk Drive fitted however you might want to confirm this with someone who has bought this product. Two IDE Connectors and two SATA Connectors good for people who haven't made the transition to SATA who want to add another Hard Disk Drive(s).

Hope this helps.

Yep, a 160GB SATA150 drive is installed - a Western Digital. Two IDE connectors = 4 IDE drives max (though you'll have problems fitting 4 IDE & 2 SATA inside!) We put my brother's old IDE 200GB drive on one of the IDE connectors (the installed Sony DVD-RW is on the other).

The PC is very quiet. The CPU fan is huge, which helps, and the graphics card is passively cooled (no fan - just a heatsink).

Hi, Thank you for confirming that a SATA150 hard disk drive is fitted.
Does the Video Card have a VGA and DVI connector (and possibly S-Video)?.

This machine does qualify for a free Vista upgrade doesn't it?.

Kind Regards.

Sorry, I missed your post! The video card has VGA and composite only.

Yes - it qualifies for a free Vista upgrade. There's a flyer in the box which states it qualifies, but strangely doesn't tell you how to get it! The assistant that helped us instore took my brother's details for warranty purposes so maybe they send it out automatically?

My brother got his instore. The assistant said it was old stock they're shifting, and that they might not have a lot of stock either instore or online. You could try instore; as I said in my first post in this thread - it was listed as a Medion instore and was not on display - we had to get an assistant to look in the storeroom.

Has anyone else managed to pick one of these up in store? If so, which ones and when?

I am very tempted in this one, but have a feeling I have missed the boat.

Pentium D range of chips are ALL dual core

the 7300GS is a very rubbish graghics card, dont expect to play anything ON good grapghics setttings but it will be able ot play most things on low/ maybe medium (depends on game)

thsi is a very good price for this sort of spec, as said before most this price have on board gfx...

any other tech spec help just PM me if needed

edit: Just a quick tip, the D in pentium D, stands for dual core as such...

My brother's playing Half Life 2 @ 1024x768 at a decent framerate with all settings on full (except AA, AF & HDR - which are off).

I was going to buy one of these today, Cardiff store has plenty.
I spoke to a member of staff to ask if it gets the free vista upgrade, he said definately no. But he then went on to say that windows media centre installed was only a 30 day trial, and you could only have vista on dual core machines.
I tries to tell him this was a dual core machine, but gave up, suffice to say i didn't even get into the 30 day trail debate:roll:

I left it behind, cos i really want vista for free, and didn't want to take the risk of no voucher/phone number in the box.

I then went to comet and bought the acer at £299

I ordered this PC on Sunday and its being delivered tomorrow.
Just a bit worried by the post above saying the Windows Media centre is only a 30 day trial.
Its not is it??
Excuse my lack of computer knowledge here please!
Also, if i did decide to upgrade to Windows Vista, whats the best way of going about it, and how much is it?
Help very much appreciated :)
#35
No, sorry for confusion,

Windows is never supplied as a 30 day trial, sometimes office is, or other software, but you can use the windows operating system forever.

I was only trying to highlight the shop staffs lack of knowledge.
#36
I'm going to slightly disagree here. Some versions of Windows (2003 server for a fact) are available from MS in a 120 day trial. So it is possible to suply such a disk, but never with a new build.

Windows on this machine is not a trial. Office is put on as a trial version. There is a flyer inside that says you are entitled to a free Vista upgrade, though doesn't tell you how to claim IIRC! I'm sure a phone call/visit to TRU can sort it out though.
#38
Fabulous, I'm just off to get one for my parents.

I picked one of these up at the Brent cross T.R.us last Sunday, They didn't have this particular system on display but they had the tickets for it in the computer section. As mentioned earlier it does come with a free vista upgrade which is on a flyer in box. The flyer states that the offer is valid until 31.03.2007 and to visit www.medion.com/vista for more information. I have not been to that link yet but ime sure it would tell you how to go about getting your free upgrade to vista. Also my details were taken by the guy in collection department which is for warranty purposes. I've been using it for 6 days now and can report no problems, Its very fast in applications thanks to the 1Gb ram and Pentium D processor. The graphics card works well, when playing doom3 when i go to the system menu and click on the 'scan hardware and select optimal video quality' it selects the 'ultra quality' which is the highest setting. Ime very happy with this purchase and would like to thank all who have wrote in with spec details and especially hittheace for spotting this deal.
#40
I would have bought one of these if i'd been sure about the upgrade to vista, I just followed the link above to medion, and yes, any medion vista ready pc bought now is eligible for the free (plus postage) upgrade.

Dimwit salesguy in toys r us. He even told me to go to pc world to buy a pc, cos the toys r us ones are just for kids to play games.

Nevermind, the acer is a good piece of kit, and comes with onboard firewire which is good for me. :-D
