Nice and cheap powerline adaptors for networking. Seem to be around £45-£50 elsewhere.

Details

Advanced HomePlug AV2 Technology

The D-Link PowerLine AV2 1000 Gigabit Starter Kit (DHP-601AV) delivers the ultimate in wired connectivity for the hard-to-reach areas of your home. Utilising your homes existing electrical wiring as a reliable high-speed network, the DHP-601AV makes it easy to connect computers, gaming consoles, and media players to your network without additional cables. The DHP-601AV is the ideal solution for getting connected in spaces like offices, bedrooms and other areas of your home that are remotely located from your router.

How does it work?

PowerLine gives you the flexibility to create the network you need in the space you have, by using your electric wiring to connect computers and other devices. Its a simple solution to what can be a sticky networking situation.

Easy setup

Hassle-free plug and play installation, plugs directly into a power socket with no additional cables required. This adapter implements 128-bit AES data encryption at the push of a button to protect your network from any intruders.

Power saving mode

Automatically places the adapter in sleep mode if no data transmission or reception occurs over a certain period of time, reducing power usage by more than 85%.

I bought the tp link ones and they are horrible. Always dropping connection.

i brought a similar set to these when they were on offer at cpc.can i just say that they are the most amazing things i have ever brought.

these are pretty decent, bought them last time at this price. they can downgrade to almost any 200mb powerline adapters too which is useful if you just want to extend. Just remember to switch them all off and back on again if you wish to up the speeds back

A couple of reviews I put on the other thread about ZYXEL PLA5206-GB0201F 1000Mb/s Gigabit Powerline Adaptor Kit:
http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/review/powerline-adapters/d-link-av2-1000-hd-powerline-adapters-review-3623398/
"Both sets of D-Link Powerlines are basic. There’s no wireless function to add a new Wi-Fi hotspot in the second room (as some Powerlines boast) and there’s no pass-through power socket on the adapters either, so they will use up your wall sockets – don’t plug them into a power extender as this will slow them down.

If you don’t have a ton of power sockets then you should consider Powerline adapters with these integrated pass-through sockets. D-Link is planning pass-through versions of both products."

(How much are your power sockets worth? It looks like pass-through versions are around £50).

This 2016 Wirecutter review says:
"The...[list of adapters], D-Link Powerline AV2 1000 Gigabit Starter Kit (DHP-601AV) were fine but unexceptional last year; now they’re too slow."

The 2000 Mbps items that they are slower than look to cost nearly £100:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dcomputers&field-keywords=powerline+2000&rh=n%3A340831031%2Ck%3Apowerline+2000

For me, these are the previous generation's products, selling at a 50% discount. Probably still good enough for most people though.

"In signal processing, a passthrough is a logic gate which enables a signal to "pass through" unaltered, sometimes with little alteration." - for the uneducated!

Pass through socket means you don't lose an electrical socket......

Weird - Have about 6 tp link (Av500) through the house and had next to no issues over the last 3 odd years

Used code and got for £20.89. Seems too cheap for gigabit versions but worth a try. Thanks op!

Question for you folks: I have 600mbps tp-link one and I get 6mb/s transfer speed. If I got a 1000mbps one would this be faster in transfer speeds? (Currently at only transferring at approx 50mbps)

I imagine it might improve stuff, but probably only increase speed by about 50%. Maybe you have an issue with your wiring/extension cables you can sort out. Alternatively, maybe you are transferring at 50 MBps, rather than 50 mbps?

Thanks, i think i have found the culprit, SKY gives out 100MBIT routers, not gigabit ones... WHAT YEAR IS IT?! 1999? come on sky!

Most home broadband routers are 100Mbps. I am amused to see they offer 300Mbps wireless, yet only 100Mbps wired. Maybe we need faster routers or switches? My motherboard has gigabit ethernet, so I wouldn't need to update that. I spotted these gigabit switches, available for £10.99 with Amazon prime:

NETGEAR GS208-100UKS 8 Port Gigabit Ethernet Desktop Switch
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00AYRZYG4/

Edimax ES-5500G V3 Gigabit Ethernet 5 Ports Desktop Switch
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/B00H8XIZT0/

D-Link 5 Port Gigabit Easy Desktop Switch for £13.44 on Ballicom:
https://www.ballicom.co.uk/d-link-go-sw-5g-b-.p826758.html

(aliexpress also do branded switches for about £10)

For those that run powerline, but need the extra plug, 1000Mbps pass-through powerline adapters are £38:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01N1PQXOI/
"BT Mini Connector Kit - 1GB Twin Powerline Plugs ideal for online gaming, streaming UltraHD, UHD, 4K, 3D and HD"
