Not sure if you can install Plex on this or install third party software, but they do provide a UPnP addon; so you can simple connect your device to that

A basic two-bay NAS with a simple user interface, but it’s not particularly fast or quiet.

I would appreciate some views on this, I never had a NAS, and always wondered if I should get one.

At the moment I use a Dell Optiplex 755 with Win 7 as a mediacenter, to run a Logitech Squeeze server, Plex, XMBC etc, plus I stream my locally stored movies to tablets and phones over LAN. I switch the mediacenter on via my android smartphone, and it goes to sleep when not used.

The mediacenter has 4GB RAM and a dual processor, and HDMI out. So I wonder if I would benefit from switching to a NAS, given the specs are lower on the D-Link ?

Looked at these yesterday, the 320l is a bit better and on amazon for a similar price. Still slow though...

How do you add to torrents remotely

You need to access the NAS remotely via browser and then open transmission. Inside that you can add torrents via the URL of the torrent file (not to be confused with providing the .torrent file.

Edit: that's if you add transmission, otherwise you use the built in P2P app which I never got working!

Thats... I think, the older model.. I used to have that one, it was very reliable, just I ran out of space and I upgraded to a microserver.

I've had this model for over 5 years, its nothing spectacular but works fine, i've got is setup in RAID 1 config (2x 3TB drives mirrored), not sure its good enough to run plex server from mind. I have a Dlink Boxee box that seems to read just about everything i put on this.
Can be configured via web browser remotely, got a java page that you can drag-drop files onto etc. Ive also got 2x Raspberry Pi's setup as CCTV stations that drop all images onto the NAS seems to handle that fine.

I have had one for a good year or two, **** me is it slow at file transfers. However once it is copied over it is perfect for storing content for streaming. I have used it to send 720 and 1080 stuff at the TV via a Raspberry Pi and XBMC and all fine.

I never got remote access working, I dont think it can do it. As in I wanted to access content remotely seeing as I have 10up at home but could never get it to work.

I have this.

Slow as hell, but does work perfectly.

I have this. Like others say it is a bit slow to transfer files to, but it does the job. The computers, android devices, PS3 and LG TV all access it. When I first got it there was one very annoying feature. When I streamed music from it using my phone or PS3 it would not play albums in their correct track listing, but by alphabetical order. I had to install Twonky media server on it to get it to do this, which was a lot of hassle for such a basic feature.

I have plex on mine, I never used fun_plug to get it either. It let me install it immediately and it runs immense.

You installed Plex Media Server on the actual NAS box? prey tell ....
#26

Me too, the jump in price for a NAS with a decent CPU/RAM setup is so frustrating. I think I may just build one...
#27
Nice little machines. My only been is slow xfer speed from Mac to the nas itself. . . .
#28
Cold based on my bad experience with DLink's DNS-320L before. My next NAS will be a better quality box with a much better user interface.

I saw the amount of effort required with fun_plug and got bored so I went to install an app and it took the package I found online. Seemed weird but it works perfect.

I get about 25mbs copy speed two 500gb hardrives jbod on gigabit lan its ok but it is too loud for me it is quiet then suddenly the fan kicks in for a while and then over and over again thinking of getting rid of mine.

cheaper at Scan Computers, just!
If you are going to buy the drives to go with it, you might be better off with this deal, which includes 2 x 1Tb drives ...

I had this until I bought a HP Microserver. Good for the price, and RAID works well, but lack of Plex and slow transfer rates forced me to make the move. It's good as a backup, but too slow for a file server.
#33
Good machine does the job on a budget if u have spare hard drives knocking around.

It was a long time ago but it looked like this thread: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=61384.0
Unless I can extract it from the NAS (no idea if possible) then that's as close as I can get.
#38
The Sharecenter 320L is a similar price on Amazon, but also includes cloud functionality.
#39
These are two slow for Plex or LMS with medium-big media libraries.
I have tried and got both working via fun_plug - its just to sloooooooooow
