I've googled this, and tried the app stores but can't find this option. Can you point me in the right direction pkease?
Open Bing Maps in your browser. If you're on a mobile device make sure that you use the "More" option in the top right and choose "Request PC Version" (the mobile version doesn't give you the OS option). Search for the place you want (say, Keswick). Now select the type of map you want to view (there's a drop-down list either from a menu item or from a small square map icon - difficult to be precise as it varies). This will give you options of Road, Aerial, Birdseye, Streetside, Ordnance Survey. Choose OS. As you zoom in it will change from Landranger (1:50,000) to Explorer (1:25,000).

I'm struggling to find this option on my iPhone. Doesn't give me an option to open or request in PC version.
thanks ordered, the code has expired but it was still cheaper than amazon - cheers

I want to walk the pennine way. Do you know many maps I would need to purchase to complete it safely?
EIGHT.
Circa £40 for a very good collection of data would be money well spent I would have thought. You use the word safely, is safety not worth £40 or would you rather just take the risk and save the £40?
I would want a digital map for my phone. The OS app should be like a satnav for the hills and tracks. It should be FREE.
Yes purchase paper, wilderness or lam-fold maps. But digital should be FREE

I don't think you will be able to navigate using this app unless you pay for it. I would like loads of things but basic principle is that I have to pay or I can't have it. Really is a simple concept if you put your mind to it.

I don't listen to Radio 4 but it is part of TV licence, hence I have to pay. There are many things the government does that I disagree with but they use my taxes for it and hence I have to pay. There is a trend here ......

Excellent price cheers!
Excellent company - always very quick and reliable.

Can't beat the prices (on offer, constantly revolving) for OS maps.

Cheers,

Douglas (UK)
Fantastic price and an essential piece of kit. Always amazes me how many people I see lost on top of a mountain in the lakes without a map. Do yourself a favor and get some of these bought, learn how to use them properly and save mountain rescue a lot of time, money and bother!
Great price, don't actually need one but heat added
The "Get Deal" button on THIS page, not on the Dash4it site!

Muppet.
I'd suggest that if you are unable to locate the correct maps of NI sat in front of your computer, then perhaps attempting to purchase said map, with a view to venturing out into the wide open countryside, might not be the best course of action open to you at this juncture.
There are no laminated OS maps of Northern Ireland - I see the mods have removed the other posts...

Seen them. In my branch they are normally lesser brand socks, they are usually light summer only version, no good for winter, been kicked around the scruffy store ten times and then only in sizes for pixies or barge footed clowns LOL

Satnavs are no good without power or a signal.
Do not become a slave to technology

Half right. power, of course. signal for gps is from satellites so no problems there. they generally have sky in the same places they have walks. If you need a mobile signal then you're doing it wrong and need to precache the map area. Official OS maps were made available for free. maps like maverick on android allow you to access and cache the area you're planning to walk in. This saves a lot of power and signal while you're out. would recommend backup portable charger if you're gonna rely on it in any meaningfully way. Personally, the smartphone with gps is a good backup to a paper map and compass and has helped a novice like me resolve a dispute between the 3 seasoned winter mountain walkers we were with.
Tried Maverick (free) last night and even though there's an option for OS maps they wouldn't show for some reason. Maybe the Pro version is needed. The Sustrans app used to show OS maps a year or so ago, but they replaced it with OSM maps due to licensing costs I believe.
PS The idiots thinking "Paper maps" are old fashioned. One of the (many) advantages of paper maps is you can, you know, open them out to get a good context of where you are in your surroundings. You don't get that on a 10" tablet. :p

Edited By: Roger_Irrelevant on Jan 15, 2014 12:01
Gonna look into the Maverick app cheers, there is one called "Locus Free" (also a pro version) that lets you download huge areas of 1:25k from Bing Maps if anyone's interested (10000 tiles per day from memory, but you can resume). But always on the lookout for new ones.

With the (taxpayer funded) OS crappy licenses consigned to history you can now get the electronic maps free rather than the ridiculous prices they used to charge. :)

Apple users still have to pay through the nose though, but they're used to doing that.
JoshuaCh1v9
Or get a waterproof map holder :) The benefit of the unlaminated ones is that you can highlight your walking route.

Suppose if your entire route fits on two panels, and you don't want to look at any other bits/take map out. I never really mark the route but you can use dry marker pens on laminated maps which just wipe off.

Nice find, I am currently waiting for tesco to get back in stock the maglite LED 2 d torch back in stock for £20.
If anyone knows of one for £20 including postage let me know :-)

This is the PRO and not the same one sold at Tesco, this is MUCH brighter
andyh24
You have your choice of extremely bright torches from dx.com, mine is measured at 200 lm and cost a whole £4.72 It is very very well made, is solid aluminium is ridiculously bright. even including buying the 18650 batteries and a charger it onl y cost anout £12 in total.
Not worth spending an extra £20 just for a brand name....

Maglite is so well known for a reason, the cheap chinese sh*te that you get from dx.com will last you a few weeks... if you're lucky!!

I've got a maglite that I use everyday for work, apart from the bulb blowing (which I have now upgraded to a maglite LED) it's not had a single problem in 12 years 8)
bouncy99
Those super bright led torches required special batteries and special Chargers and some blow up etc. This will be standard batteries etc.

I don't know if they blow up but I like the idea of being able to buy some normal Duracell from a shop if I am not at home and don't have access to my specialist charger. The fenix runs on 8aa batteries (obviously best to get rechargeables) which is why I like it. That and the fact it outputs 860 lumens on high and last for 10 days on low.

sorry to put a downer on it, as I use dash4it regularly for os maps and think they provide great service and great prices.

I have received the email stating 40% off using the code listed, and prefilled my basket ready for when I was prepared to make the order.

After having read your post I went through the checkout procedure and tried the code, on an £89 order, I saved £6.

The thing is, these maps sell for £5.59 from here anyway, so have no idea what they are playing at, either way, this deal is cold as a result.

Explorer ACTIVE maps FTW!!

The map data used by the OS is Crown Copyright. The Ordnance Survey is a fund generating government department which generates money for the Treasury. Without this money, taxes would rise. It's understandable that they would want to protect their only asset from unauthorised use.
I work for another fund generating government department, and we have a license to use OS data.
