yes catwoman Mr Shed is correct..I think we dtermined in a previous query that you required DDR not DDR2 ram.
#4
PC3200 is plain DDR. Usually used with 32 bit processors.

DDR2 will not work unless your PC accepts DDR or DDR2. (Mostly newer motherboards)

Think you mean AND :)

Or CW....I have a brand new 512 stick I am happy to sell...

It depends what you mean by 'AND'?

You can use either DDR or DDR2, but not mix both types on boards that accept both types.
#9
I mean DDR2 will not work if her PC accepts DDR. Which is what you have implied. Never mind, not entirely important...

It could have been clearer than mud, but I was actually saying it would only work in boards that accept types... DDR and DDR2. :whistling:

Hi,
All it is my computer is a bit slow as its only got 512 ddr memory in it .
I just want to speed it up a bit more .
Whats the best option please?
Thanks
The motherboard is GA-8SQ800 - SIS 655 CHIPSET agp8x/dual channel ddr
Which means absolutely nothing to me !!!
#12
Need to find out how many slots you have for memory, and how many are taken up...
#13
I have a picture of the motherboard that came with the computer and it says;
There are memory module sockets (1 blue and 1 orange together that say DDR1 ,DDR2 , then 2 more the same that say DDR3 AND DDR4.)
I think there is possibly 1 stick of 512 in -but i guess i will have to open the case to find out ? If so i will do that tomorrow.
Thanks
#14
Get yourself an extra 1GB PC3200 DDR.

Should be more than enough for general use.
#15
aria are now doing google checkout :-)
#16
Use Crucials system scanner, will tell what RAM you need and how many spare slots you have.
It's here linky
#17
Does anyone know the timings of the RAM? I'm guess 5-5-5-12?

You can go to crucials website and there is a program on the home page you click on it and it tells you how many slots you have and exactly what memory you already have.

I got 1gb of 3200 DDR from a computer fair last week for £40.

edit: Sorry Paddy didn't see your post before I posted the same.

Your board has 4 RAM slots and you want to run the memory in pairs for best performance. Go to the crucial website as previously suggested and see what your current configuration is. If you have 1 x 512MB module then buy another 512MB and install it in the matching slot. i.e. the other slot of the same colour, they are colour coded.
If you currently have 2 x 256 MB modules then you can buy another two 256 MB modules and install them in the spare slots giving you 1GB. Alternately you could buy two 512MB modules which would give you a total of 1.5GB.
1GB is pretty much a minimum recommendation for Windows XP and it’s easy to use more than that without even trying I find although I rarely go above 1.5GB.
Details on your motherboard here:
http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_Overview.aspx?ProductID=1610&ModelName=GA-8SQ800

The RAM you want is called DDR400 or PC3200; it’s the same thing.
I recommend buying the cheapest Branded memory you can get; if you buy unbranded stuff the chances of problems are considerably higher.

Hi,
Thanks a lot-going to look on there now.
I bought some memory a few years ago from a computer fair and my PC had error messages all over it and was totally in a mess - had to take it to PC World and they exchnged the memory and it was fine - the memory i had bought was faulty ,so would only buy branded now.
#21
Ok,
Apparantly there are 3 banks and 2 are empty, so there is one lot of 512 ddr3200 in it.
It does not support dual channel memory and it doesnt have to be in matching pairs. CPU SPEED 2162MHZ.
Memory capacity is 3072mb.
#22
Catwoman: Keep an eye on www.overclockers.co.uk as they have some excellent clearance deals. I just bought some RAM from them yesterday at an excellent price; 2GB DDR2 1000 MHz for £80 shipped. They have Crucial 2 x 256MB for £31.45 shipped at the moment which is pretty good: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-023-CR

They also have Corsair 1x 512MB for £26.43 shipped: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-042-CS&groupid=595&catid=597&subcat=639

Post what you require and I’m sure you’ll get some suggestions if you need a different configuration.

That doesn't match with the spec that Gigabyte have on their website for the model number that you gave!

Why not try downloading CPU-Z and see what it says; it’s a utility that is very highly regarded by hardware geeks; http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php
You will need to uncompress it somewhere and double click the cpuz.exe file as it doesn’t have an installer. It will give you info on your motherboard and RAM amongst other things.

Note. Ebuyer and Aria have some good deals on the smaller PC3200 chips with the Google discount.

Hi,
I'm confused !
I have a cd which says ; chipsets/ATA133+RAID/USB2 and a piece of paper with the motherboard pic on telling its a GIGABYTE PENTIUM 4 TITAN SERIES GA-8SQ800ULTRA /GA-8SQ800.
When i went to crucial website it came up with ASUS A7N8X-X Motherboard .
Help ??
#25
Hi,
Downloaded that file and its definately a ASUS A7NX-X
Is this better than the one i thought it was and why have i got a diagram of a different one ??
#26
Hi Smiling Crow,
Thanks for your help - will get some from there -seems to be cheapest i have seen - not sure whether to go for 1 GB OR 512 MB as when i get my wireless adsl up and running and installed (which is something i have no idea on how to do !! - Linksys 200g) i will be using the laptop more i would imagine.

It depends how you use your PC; for many people 1GB in total would easily be enough. I currently have iTunes, Opera, Outlook, Word & IE open and it takes up 1GB already! If you multi-task a lot go for 1.5GB in total.
#28
Hi ,
Thanks-512 will be enough for me .
Is this a bertter motherboard -if i do want to upgrade anything later or was the one i thought it was better??
Thanks a lot.

I don't know as you've given 3 different model names now!

Your advice is confusing. DDR2 will only work on board that supports DDR2, and the same goes for DDR. Let's leave ASRock mishmash boards out of this.

catwoman, you need to buy DDR ram, http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/49447 or http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Memory/DDR/DDR400+%28PC3200%29/+Arianet+Lifetime+512MB+PC3200+DDR?productId=19969 will do the job. I'm assuming you use your PC for general use, not gaming, and running XP as opposed to vista.
#31
Hi,
Yes i do as have just bought a Dell laptop running vista which i haven't used much as yet- going to set up a wireless connection this afternoon - should be fun as never done it before. Bought a Linksys wag200g from Amazon for £35 delivered -now gone up to over £40 !
The motherboard is definately a ASUS A7N8X-X - I just had some paperwork with a different model on for some reason?!
#32
Just thought id add, pc2-3200 RAM (i.e. 400mhz) does exist.
#33
with all these great deals on RAM how do I find out which type I need?

BTW I have a Compaq Evo Pentium 4.
#34
Hi,
I used the link on here to crucial memory and it scans your pc and tells you what you need.
#35
cheers for the tip, i'll check out the crucial website!
