Oh well, I wasn't overly keen on the Tosh anyway. Was a bit bulky compared to my ancient IBM

Are Acers any good though? Tesco sell them which is enough to make me wonder :p

acer? that must be hot! wait, i mean the tempature of all the components, you can make your breakfast on acer laptops :)
#10
thats a great price for the spec, stick some more memory in it then youve got a great spec laptop
#11
Don't forget 2% Quidco for laptops. Thinking of getting this...

edit: That's about £6.80

...the one I'm currently typing on is running as if it wasn't turned on (temperature wise) except for the touchpad being *slightly* warm (but it's at a nice temperature)...

Acer warranty and customer support sucks!

I can put some of personal problems here, issues that friends have had or you can google them.

Majority of Ace customers won't complain about having no problems with their laptop though.
#15
I think this is a better deal?
http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.204-6256.aspx

Same laptop with more memory, slightly better processor and can be had for £340 with the £9 off £90 spend voucher or £329.80 with quidco
#16
I've got an Acer ..oldish but as far as I gather Acer's do have a tendency to get lines down the screen...like this one, though maybe they've improved the more recent screens.

Hot deal tho, have some heat...

Aspire laptops are more bulky and ugly than the Travelmate series. Specs are good though.
#18
Good price for the spec, but as it's an Acer, I would advise people against buying it, they make poor quality laptops.
#19
I have no experience with Acer myself but we're talking budget laptops here - you cant get premium brands with the same spec for this price.

Well I didn't complain either :) and bought more acer gear and got some for friends as well. Only realized how **** they were once the first thing broke down then another and another and spend literally hours on 0870 or 0871 numbers for support (more than £20 in bills!!!) finally giving up on the products and the company
#21
Completely agree with alchemistkevin, bought one over 3yrs ago now went back once because the case had become unhinged. Then went back again because multi coloured lines appeared on the screen, and two weeks after the warranty expired the power supply blew up followed by the battery holding all of 10 seconds charge. This also happened to my dad’s acer.

Swapped to Dell and would never buy anything from Acer again.
#22
My new Acer 5920G is well built , excellent spec & blows the pants off my old Fujitsu Siemens ( good that it was ) & Toshiba ( **** that it was ).

Best of all cost me £300
#23
Have had problems with every Acer I have bought.

First would not boot (DOA and they replaced it) 2nd had hinge snap after about 4 months.. cost a fortune in support calls to get that sorted. Latest one has a problem with the power input socket and will only charge if I turn the laptop upside down! Not very convenient..

I won't be buying Acer again although the specs to price ratio is great and you might be lucky. If you want budget then I would go for Dell (just my opinion of course)
#24
you are going to get good and bad stories for all products. I just bought an acer 7520 last month and have been impressed bu its design and build quality.

If you get a good deal then there is no problem.

I like danspen comments saying his 3 yr old acer has passed its best - my four year old dell is passed its best too but i look on it that its x yrs old and thats what happens with most modern tech equipment!!

if you are worried about them then take out a 3 year warranty. currently £60 or £90 with accidental damage. Both come with a carry bag an "optical mouse" - not sure how good the mouse would be. for my 17" acer a decent bag is £30 so not much difference. you can register calls online so no premium numbers. fault in that is that your computer maybe too broke to get online but you can see what i eman....

This is a DELL I priced - came in at £438

BASE Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T5800 (2.0 GHz, 800 MHz FSB, 2 MB L2 cache)
OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows Vista SP1™ Home Premium - English
MICROSOFT SOFTWARE Microsoft® Works 9.0 / English - (Does not include Microsoft® Word)
HARDWARE SUPPORT 1 Year Limited Warranty - Collect & Return
COLOUR CHOICE Jet Black Colour with Matte Finish
LCD 15.4" Wide Screen WXGA (1280 x 800) Display with TrueLife™
MEMORY 2048MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x1024]
HARD DRIVE 160GB (5400RPM) SATA Hard Drive
GRAPHICS CARD Integrated Intel® Graphic Media Accelerator X3100
OPTICAL DRIVE 8x DVD+/-RW Optical drive, including SW
PRIMARY BATTERY 6-cell battery

Almost £100 more than the Acer but you can buy now and pay in 12 months interest free to spread the cost. I was looking for a laptop for my brother. To be honest I probably would probably buy DELL - I've had my desktop for a few years without any issues.
#26
Have a look at dell outlet as they are currently doing £55 off and free delivery.
#27
Thanks - there are a couple of suitable laptops there. Do you know if the £55 is subtracted at checkout or are they already discounted by £55 when your search results are returned?

When you have selected one the -£55 is a tick box in the options. Remember the prices are plus vat. So price you see -£55 plus 17.5%.

Excellent thanks. I originally thought there was just one page of Inspirons but there's about 25! He's going to be spoiled for choice :)

They replaced a motherboard for me with no hassle and no loss of data, they did the same for a friend. and they also gave me a replacement power adapter FOC just outwith my warranty period.

Hence I rate Acer's customer service and warranty, I've had mine for probably 4.5 years now and since the repair it's been solid. The repair was due to the power socket becoming damaged due to using it on my lap, and not on a surface.

Nothing wrong with Acer, half of the complaints on this thread about them can happen with all manufacturers.

is this the same one that misco had last month with £50 cashback?

yeah but half the companies dont use grade B conponents, its well know on the inside that acer and a few others use grade B conponents. and now you know why acer, packard hell etc have a higher percentage of problems that most:thumbsup:

I ditched the acer shortly after the power supply blew up. I had a dell insipron 6400 over 2 years ago, not one problem and the battery still lasts 3hr not 5mins.
#35
I used to have an Acer Extensa, the parts in it were quality, LG screen, LG DVDRAM, Seagate HDD, but the built quality was ****! There was massive keyboard flex, the power adaptor did not fit that well into the socket, and I was not convinced it would last. Now I have a Dell Vostro and it's mangensium alloy cased and feels sturdy. Only problem with it is that my brother has been picking it up by the screen and the hinge has become loose, making the screen wobble. I'm sure Dell will sort it thanks to my one site next business day warranty.
#36
hope mine is ok as I ordered one of these the other day, First laptop and it just to use downstairs whaere a desktop would be a little bulky.

Yes Steve,

Totally agree. We had a contact with Dell at work. After loads of problems with Dell laptops base units and servers.......and Dell not turning up when they said they would or not fixing them within the stated time........we dumped them. Dell are still a nightmare.

We re-contracted with acer and had about 75 base units 60 odd laptops of varied spec and servers.

We had a few teething issues with few but the guys contracted by Acer to come to us have dealt with the problem professionally and quickly.

Calls to Acer have also been dealt with professionally and quickly.

As a member of staff in a huge dept that deal with all types of computers on a large scale we have to say that Acer have been very good.

Dell lost out on our contract in our office because of there lack of interest and not doing the job contractually by them for us asa per the agreement. There computers were ofter a nightmare in build and quality. And lastly the contact with Dell was totally (In our experience) un-professional.

No,I agree that Acer are good. Myself and other work people purchased Acer products through work and can safely say we have had no problems to talk about.....................if anything it was issues with Vista that caused any problems but even they were more annoying than anything.

Do you work for Acer or regually repair Acer hardware? It's quite a comment to state they use 'grade b' componemts without backing it up with some actual factual information.

We all have our own opinions, however it's wrong to put people off what is a fair entry level laptop at a decent low price.
