No option to install an optical drive on my i7 16gb Ram 4k touch screen XPS 15... just a netbook with a bigger screen, obviously!

(Didn't realise anyone even still used optical drives!)

It says celeron for 129 and i3 for 199 not i5 on linked page.

Title of deal is misleading

My bad, the poster image is extremely small, upon examining it closely it does indeed say i3. I'll fix up the details.

Yeah im with you on this one, I didnt have an optical drive on my desktop for years, on the rare occasion of needing one I simply used an external one, there around the same price on amazon as internal ones and simply plugin via usb.
I would much rather pay less and save on weight and battery life for a laptop than buy one with, but even then in fairness I wouldn't turn a deal like this down based on such a small detail!

I agree the picture is crap, I edited my original post with more clarity/info. The £199 laptop is the £379 laptop on the same page (sorry your link won't open for me for some reason).

Is there a link for the £129?
Thx

this seems like a good deal, does anyone know if this laptop has multitouch as i want the old style 1 finger scroll on the touchpad.

The i3 for £199 looks like a good price to me. I have been on the lookout for a laptop, and that i3 has the IntelHD 5500 GPU which is decent enough to run some games in low settings which is what i was after. So at that price its a good deal imo.

Anybody know if that processor will run Roblox and Minecraft without any issues?

The i3 processor will play both fine. The Celeron processor is fine for Roblox but will struggle with Minecraft. There's a review of how the Intel HD 5500 graphics in the i3 runs some games here.

Hoping for some big discounts on some of the better ranges

Just to add here (and please don't take this as raining on your parade), these processors are 5th gen.
Latest ones are 7th gen. It's a pre-Christmas clearout.

The Celeron will run Vanilla Minecraft fine but 4GB won't cut it for mods.
My daughter's i5 / 8GB / SSD laptop plays Crazy Craft 2.2 OK but won't play 3.0.

Are you serious? It's been a while since I've played Minecraft (and I've not played Crazy Craft) but the graphics were terrible. I used to play on a Core2Duo back in the day so surely any i5, even 1st gen should be okay? If not, what did Microsoft do to it?

Does anyone with 'Black Friday' and Dell experience know if it's likely there'll be any deals on the new Alienware 13 R3? Someone in a deal thread for the 13 R2 said it would go on sale in the UK tomorrow.

Alienware are offering 10% off at the moment which expires today so yes i'd expect new 13" R3 out very soon. There is £100 off XPS as well (Code: DELLXPS) and a new XPS 15 is expected soon as well (perhaps January for CES)

It runs in Java so RAM is very important for mods.
You GPU barely gets touched - your CPU will be doing most of the hard work for the PC / Mac version.
The Windows 10 version (more like Pocket Edition) isn't Java-based so it'll run well on lesser hardware.

Surely the only reason for having an optical drive in a laptop is so you can pull it out and replace it with a second hard drive in a caddy. Or am I missing something?
#38
what is the deal on the monitor on the advert, have you got a link to a larger pic??

A lot of people just use laptops for web browsing and basic stuff these days. A Celeron will be more than enough for that.
