There is a nice mistake in the hard drive upgrades:

160 GB (7.200rpm) SATA Hard Drive with Free Fall Protection [add £11.75]

Now not only is this an upgrade in size but being a 7200rpm drive it will read/write 12-14% quicker than the 5400rpm drive and I'm pretty sure the free fall protection comes at a premium usually so a right billy bargain for just £11.75 extra.

is the 6400 a better deal at same price?

Well theres a question...there are two 6400's on offer, the cheaper one is on a par with this one spec wise though I'm not sure if this Celeron wouldnt out perform the 6400's cpu. These new celerons are not slow, they seem to be like core2duo's with half the cache, you would need to do some googling to find comparison charts.
The other 6400 has 2 gig of ram so is better in that respect, but is more expensive.

Then there is the screen, 15.4" against 17" the latter is much less portable in my opinion, depends what you want it for, 17" is better for a desktop replacement.

Excellent find, Mike. I was pondering the various merits of the other deals, but the HDD mistake is a real bonus, as is the 17" screen. I think the HDD price is missing a '1'! Hoping they will honour this, but they have been good in the past.

Yes as long as you dont want it to do lots of video encoding or play latest games I think the celeron M 2Ghz should be a ample. Slot in 2 sticks of 1gig ram later if you need to, quite a bargain for a big screen. The drive upgrade is quite a bonus.
A fair bit of neg voting on this already, strange really as I posted pretty much the same deal at the end of last month and it got to 400+ in no time.

What am I doing wrong? My price is £423.07

Good deal Mike. Voted hot.

Is increasing the processor to dual core worth the extra £40 spend?

I am on a £400 budget and was wondering whether I should spend the extra £40 elsewhere?

Thanks
[mod] 1 Like #13
Its £47 for the cpu which would make a difference as its 2meg of cache and faster fsb too.

Its a toss up between that and the 128meg graphics card at a bargain price of £35

Dont forget the hard drive upgrade, thats a def no brainer!
#14
Those specs are pretty low. Spend a little more if you possibly can and get a much better laptop that will be a better investment in the long run.

I've used them three times now and the service has always been excellent. One of the few larger companies who actually seem to care about customer service. The one time something went a little wrong they got straight on to it and sorted it and gave me a £30 refund. I wouldn't buy a PC from anyone else any more.

Thank you MIke for the information

I have bought lots of Dells and never yet had a problem that couldnt be resolved, they tend to bend over backwards to be helpful if you need it. An email normally results in a reply giving an assistants name who will be dealing with you, plus a supervisors name should you feel the need to bypass the assistant.
I think like all big companies, mistakes do happen and those get the pubic forum airing where the majority of happy customers are just too busy playing with the kit to shout how good a service they got.

If I were allowed just £351 to spend it would be the Vostro 1000, though the battery would let it down unless gran would lend me enough for an upgrade.

The last time this offer was on around 4 weeks ago, as far as I can make out all the orders were cancelled. Will anyone get one this time???

Yep now £70 to upgrade the drive to 7200rpm free fall.

They would have spotted it eventually anyway but when people phone order to try for more discount and specifically say they want that drive it highlights the problem as soon as a salesman sees it, whereas buying on line it just goes through an automated system so isnt picked up.

I assume these machines would be compatible with older core duo processors? Id like to get one at this price, ditch the celeron and drop in a T2600 2.16ghz core duo. Does anyone think I won't be able to do this?

I suggest you ask somewhere like the notebook forums as dell are pretty frugal with bios instructions so maybe the cpu wont get recognised, also dell seem to change wifi cards with cpu type, that maybe a chipset constraint.
