Thanks for the list Mike :)

Thanks Mike...there are many members who wish to stick with XP so it will certainly assist their considerations.

I'm still on XP - what are the issues with Vista?

Some drivers for applications or hardware havnt been made to work correctly yet with Vista, so for those customers Vista is a nightmare if its forced onto them because they bought a new pc without any other OS options.

As an aside, Dell will be making Linux available on some laptops later in the year for those who hanker for something different.
Currently, all Dell N-Series Precision Workstation desktops are available and supported with Red Hat Linux.

Surely getting a pre installed XP machine with a Vista upgrade is the only sensible thing to do?
[mod]#6
I would be a little careful here, I cant say what other manufacturers will be doing but with Dell it looks to me like if you choose to go for a system now with XP as the OS you have made your choice and thats it. I very much doubt you can have your cake and eat it too. There will be no free or near free upgrade path to you from XP to Vista.
After all they are offering you Vista and you are not taking the offer up.
The main reason for Dell offering a free upgrade path before Xmas was because of poor sales where customers were waiting for Vista, so they had little choice but to offer the free upgrade, now you will notice when looking at an XP page on Dells build your pc pages it no longer mentions the link to apply for an upgrade to Vista.
So think carefully before you act or you could find yourself buying Vista later because you opted for XP now.

Remeber vista is just an operating system - upgrades are never as good as installed originally. If you are thikiking of changing your system in the next 6 months then I would hold off until then rather than upgrade. If its working dont try to fix it.

I am thinking of getting a Vista Dell, but already have a copy of XP Pro. Does anyone know if it's possible to set a Dell up with a dual boot option?
#9
i have ordered the e520 from last weeks hot deals but did not get an option of xp, I have found out that a program i use (quickbooks) and vista are incompatable. this is a big problem for me.

Do you think dell would send me an xp os disk to install??

If your pc has yet to be delivered phone dell and tell them of your problem, they may offer XP instead as the OS. Of course you can cancel the order at any time under the distance selling regs too.

You may need some help with dual booting Vista from something like Dualbootpro utility as Vista writes to the drive MBR when booting which may not allow xp to boot later so a utility to stop the two OS's from fighting each other may be needed.

Which is why I posted the above and why this is a very cold deal in my opinion.

Sorry to disagree , but this is exactly what i've been looking for - bought a new pc in December(dimension 9200) so have the vista upgrade from that, if and when i want it but now need a second pc for cctv recording and the software requires xp, no monitor required either so these are perfect.

So i'd be voting it hot if i knew how

Edit; voted hot

A mouse click on the hot end of the thermometer at the bottom of post No1 in this thread will do it:thumbsup:

Looks live Dell has caved in to consumer pressure - maybe too many customers have decided not to buy Vista for the time being and Dell's sales have taken a hit? This might explain why their PC prices seem to have come down in recent weeks.
[mod]#16
I think its more a case of the third party software companies have not got their act together and managed or are indeed interested in writing upgrades/drivers to work with Vista which has left many Dell customers with expensive software that isnt now compatable with thier new Dell PC.
Dell still offer all the business laptops and desktops with XP for just that reason.

So an updated version of your security software will never be available to run on Vista? That being the case then you are probably right. However I do suspect there will be an updated version in time that will most likely work on Vista and that being the case you won’t be licensed for it.

You always want to be 'future proofed' as far as the O\S is concerned even if you do not choose to install and use it. That is why I have voted cold.

On the contrary I'd always go for vista pre-installed,for lots of reasons, including; you'll have all the right drivers, plus the recovery partition will be configured for vista etc.

This is just what I have been looking for. Voted hot, THANKS!

DO NOT BELIVE THE HYPE- IMNSHO Vista is a complete waste of money and effort. XP is pretty much rock solid, the only thing vista does is more bells and whistles. ALL of which you will spend the first week trying to disable, until it runs like XP did.

Even then, its still a nightmare trying to get software to function and get the latest drivers from vendors.

Its all a marketing ploy to get people to upgrade their machines (2gig recommend blah blah...) Dell and other hardware vendors are bound to love this. I've had lots people saying coming to me saying the need to upgrade for vista. I tell them DONT bother!

My 2.6Ghz celron with 512 ram from dell for £152 about 2 years ago is on 24/7 365, and gets rebooted about once a month and running all sorts of applications and is constantly downloading/seeding, and it runs FASTER than the last dual core 2.8ghz 1gig ram dell with 'vista basic' on it.

No doubt we will all end up being forced to use vista but until then, if its not broke dont fix it.

Is there a way to purchase these with any additional discounts i.e. the quidco cashback? I can't find these on the dell site so can't click through from quidco and purchase it.

Also, (its for a friend who just wants to surf, look at family photos, email etc... nothign too hectic), will the plain onboard graphics card be ok? I can't see why not, anyone got any opinions?

Onboard graphics will be fine for that and some less demanding games too.

Quidco will work with these systems, just log into your quidco account and go the the dell home page, left sidebar scroll down and find Shop by ecode. Enter 305 in the left ecode box and the ecode from this thread (eg:D03C05AXP) that you want to buy in the right hand box with no forward or trailing spaces, click and your there. HTH.

Just bring this post back to life as the featured systems are still available with XP as the OS this week, I have checked all the prices and they cost no more or less than the Vista equiped same ecodes.

hmm mike is it not microsoft offering the free upgrade not dell?.as for vista drivers some comapanies do not even support 64 bit drivers yet namely aol.so not holding my breath.vista was released to manufacturers 3 months ago so its pure laziness if you have no drivers for your hardware.
[mod]#26
betelgeus, Dell are not offering any 64bit Vista OS at this time afaiaa.

If Dell offer both Vista and XP on a system and you buy XP you have burnt your boat for Vista as far as dell are concerned. You cant have your cake and eat it too. It was dell offering the vista upgrade to its customers in order to get them to buy before Xmas with XP. The idea being that when you installed the Vista upgrade kit being sent out now you release your XP licience in favour of the Vista one so your not supposed to end up with 2 legal copies of an OS.
