Another cracking deal Mike, you're on fire today :D

Are the Dimensions suffering from the same delays in production and delivery as the Vostros?

No delays with Dimensions with quad cores (fast cpu's! ;-) )
#4
Cheers pal :)

Any idea why the Vostros have such a delay? Just demand outstripping supply?
#5
Also, comes with the choice between Core 2 Duo or Viiv Core 2 Duo for no extra price, what's the difference between these?

Partly our fault I think, they were supposed to be Small bus only but as the ecodes worked on Home too we have been hitting them hard I think. Plus I guess they didnt thing the take up would be so great.

How good is this compared to some of the other ones recently posted by you Mike?

I need to upgrade between now and christmas .... not in any specific rush though.

Budget will be around £700 Can/Will I get a better desktop that this if I am prepared to wait a bit longer?

Don't do a lot of games but do do a fair amount of video processing (converting AVI -> DVD etc.) Current processor creaks a little and can take up to 4 hours to convert 3GB of AVI ... while killing the remainder of the machine!!

My crystal ball is rather cloudy today but I can see that CPU prices should continue to fall and once the Chinese have got at least 1 monitor each the price of them should fall as the market gets more spare ones so toward Xmas should see more for less....maybe ;-)
#9
If you don't have to buy right now, I think it is always worth waiting. As Mike says, CPU prices always seem to go down as newer, faster and more powerful ones are introduced.

Mind you there is always that "too good to be true offer" to consider... the problem is, they usually are!

I wish they would provide decent graphics cards, every online shop or auction sell good spec pcs with average at best cards :(
#11
you could change to the 8800gtx £249 is reasonable.they want £440 for it by itself.the cheek

Well you can spec up to SINGLE 768MB nVidia® GeForce® 8800 GTX graphics card so I dont think its that.

the 8600 gts is a decent card. its no 8800 gtx but it beats what you get from the likes of pc world (8400) for the price. on a side note this deals blows the pc world quad core deal out the water full stop. charlie

They only do it to cut costs, hence why this looks so cheap. TBH i really wish they'd do a "No GPU" option, allowing you to install you're own later

That wouldnt sell to well as there is no on board Video on the 9200 so you would need to run out and buy a video card before you could use it:w00t:
#16
True, but i'd at least prefer some more options. The ATI X1950Pro and XT are both good alternatives to the 8600GT/GTS and they retail at around the same price

Dell ain't that bad anyway, was taking a look at other sites to see how close they can get and Evesham are charging £361.61 for an ATI 512MB X1900XT! Also costs £217 extra to go from an Athlon 3800+ to a 5200+!
#17
With PC's anyone can wait and get better specs.

...... and wait and wait and wait.

I doubt your going to see much better than this for the next 2/3 months.

Some people are still waiting to see how low VHS video recorders are going to go.

Life's too short.
#18
I agree this option actually isn't bad, 8600gt is an alright card. I was referring more to ebay sellers, who sell high spec c2d's, high speed ram and a £20 gfx card :<
#19
im tempted with this system but cannot get it to the price stated, is the quidco discount that high?

The price is correct at £668, follow the instructions in my OP to get that price. Any discount from quidco is off this price. I dont quote prices inc quidco

Remove the warranty, then add the Logitech Wireless Desktop for a fiver odds then subtract the mouse.

So the motherboard is the main difference between the 9200 and the previous e520/521 then?
#23
Link doesn't work for me, anyone else often get this problem? Tried in both firefox and ie
#24
sorry all, i was using the pc at work and it didnt like the link, now im at home it works fine!
#25
so, i presume this has a higher power supply than the vostro 200 systems, so better for upgragdes in future?

yip according to spec its rated at 375w, but according to most dell underate their power suppy units so its prob a more higher than that. for upgradability the system is the better choice over the vostro. charlie

Mike cant get that link to work,is there another link as i really want this with xp ,seems more stable
#28
Is there some way to get this same deal but with Vista Home Premium? It isn't a huge issue it just should technically cost less than Vista Business and would be compatible with the Viiv processor — I'm not bothered enough to cough up for Ultimate.

Either way this is a very tempting deal and one I'm more than likely to take up.

So the motherboard is the main difference between the 9200 and the previous e520/521 then?

Shamelessly bumping my own question...

Would someone please care to explain what the differences are between the different Dell models (or point to a website that explains this)

How does the dimension 9200 series compare to the vostro 200.

What about the dimension c521?
And the dimension e520 (featured in that super deal found by miket a few months back)?
[mod]#31
Animons, the 9200 is a top of dell range of desktops unit just one step off going to the extreme of XPS range. The Vostro 200 is a business entry pc so not intended to be kitted out with ultra fast graphics cards etc. the C521 and E520 are no longer available.
If you want full specs on both the Vostro base and 9200, go Dell support and look for manuals for both.

Thanks Mike! Just two questions: Would a different video card be any quieter and if I was to passively cool, is there enough room for a larger heatsink? Not that I really want to start opening it up as soon as I get it! Would rather just buy and know that I didn't have to mess around with it.
