OK this deal is now showing the 19" TFT in the deal BUT dell saw fit to reduce the size of the hard drive to 80Gb so the deal isnt quite as good again.

I will go through the whole dell site again later today once they have finished messing with the deals and see if I cant find some suitable for here.

#8

banned#9
know of :-D any other deals on offer?????
#10
Excellent deal :) thanks Mike !

Hello,

Jodenice etc, to get this for £329 instead od £399 you need to go to the Support Services tab (on the bottom of the dell screen) once you have clicked on the link above and then select the one year collect and return option. Dell automatically add £70 and give you at home on site service.

I was looking at this computer yesterday to put downstairs for surfing the net using my LCD tv. They are £279 without a monitor, so for £329 with a 19" which dell sell seperatley for £181 seems like the best bargain so far I've seen, you could prob sell the monitor seperatley if you wanted for about £120, making this around £209 for the computer.

hot hot hot!

Saw your link this morning Mike and was all set to order once the 19" upgrade had been added.. did not complete the order once I saw they had dropped the memory and hard drive offer.. was a fantastic deal until then! Darn those Dell people

I am simply looking for the cheapest PC with 19inch monitor that will let us surf the web and email

wondering is the offer below "better value"
£60 more (different processor and more RAM) hard disk space is not important to us at all

any comments pointers would be appreciated

escentual, the E520 is a more upgradeable machine e.g. if you wanted to add a dedicated graphics card later which you could do on the E520 (albei limited to single width low power cards) but couldn't on the C521 which is limited to integrated graphics only. Dell e-value code D01E05a is for an E520 which has a slightly better specification that the one you quoted (has a DVD re-writer as opposed to just a combo drive) but is actually £10 cheaper at £379 delivered.

Not sure how the Celeron processor compares with the Sempron which is the AMD equivalent cut-down no-frills processor however I would have thought both would have been ideal for basic web and email use. That being the case it's really a question of whether you need to pay an extra £50 for a bigger HDD, 256MB extra RAM, a DVD burner and better future upgradeability. Personally, I think the extra would be worth it - you would really need a minimum of 512MB RAM which almost makes the E520 a better option in itself.

Thanks for this Mike :)

48x CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive

The combo bit always confuses me. Does that mean that you can't burn off CD's on the combo drive, does it have to have the -/+ sign next to it for that? Thanks

My understandind is that it will read and burn CD's and CD rewritables but will only play DvD's (not burn)
Most burners will work on + & - format disc's.

Thanks Mike - i am actually looking for a desktop for the elderly lady that looks after my dogs. She has asked for my advice because I'm under 40 and she thinks I know about computers! I only know the basics.

She needs it to - connect to the internet.
use an excel package to list her netball games (she's an umpire)
Type letters.

She wants a desktop. (her current one is about 12 years old and covered in dog hair).

So is this the best deal? or will she have to buy a modem on top of it to connect to the Net.

Any help appreciated thanks.
#22
Worth bumping up as it's still available...
[mod]#23
Jodenice, unless she has an external modem or has broadband she will need a modem as dell now dont fit them standard (+£23.50) for theirs.
Any of these cheap packages will do her jobs.
305-D01E01a should be fine but needs a modem added to the price. I guess a 17" TFT will seem wonderful to her if she's still using a 14" tft from 12yrs ago

Well nowadays pretty much any computer available will do this with great ease. You'd probably need a bit more ram than normal if she's using databases but you still won't need more than 512Mb. Even the most basic graphics card will handle this sort of workload with ease.

With internet connection, she may be best going for a broadband package. Customer service is usually very good at getting you connected to the internet and will often throw in free routers/cables etc.

Still available and a good price too!

Just spoken to her and she threw me

'how much to get one with a modem'

and

'does it come with excel as standard'

:w00t:

she's been looking stuff up! And I didn't know the answer. My reply?

'I shall look it up and contact you tomorrow!' :giggle:

Why can't you add a dedicated graphics card to the c521??? It comes with a pci-e slot so you can buy your own graphics card and plug it in.

You can, only thing is it will need to be a half height card as the case is the slim version.
