a good alternative too the asus one from the carphone warehouse, nice find:)

this does seem like a very good deal.

Any ideas how this compares to the Asus ?

I bought the Asus but would really prefer a 14" screen and am more fmailiar with the Dell brand.

I wonder what the re-sale potential is for an almost new Asus ??

I'd be interested if you decided to sell

Dell has better processor, bigger hard drive n comes with optical dvd drive...this will hit battery life tho. Would also be interested if selling asus laptop....can't decide between the two?

Anyone know the screen resolution or aspect ratio on this?
#10
if the asus was half price -- good buy

Has anyone found something that confirms the actual physical size of the viewable area of the 14" screen (after all not all screens are their stated size) ?

I will answer this myself tomorrow, as I have succumbed and ordered with Amazon Prime next day delivery!! I will be able to check out the Dell and Asus side by side and make an informed choice.

I have voted hot due to the price, but I still prefer the Asus UL30A from carphone. Much thinner and lighter and a truly amazing battery life, these features are more important to me than an optical drive. The 14z isn't really the thin and light notebook that the ULV CPU's were intended for IMO, its the same size and weight as normal 14" dell. Still a belting price for what you get.

I have just received my order but not yet opened it, as the box says it is a Dell 1470 not a 14Z. Are they the same thing ??

FWIW, I much prefer the keyboard, and trackpad / mouse arrangement on this to the Asus, so will be disposing of my Asus. This does not have the wow factor of the Asus, but I think functionality is more important.

Am interested in your Asus if you're thinking of selling it on, going to definitely buy one of these or a HP Mini 311c so let me know if you fancy selling it.

Cheers :)

While this used to be the case with CRT's (15" was often 13.5" viewable etc...) 99% of TFT's are the stated size. Until the past few months, I'd have said that's always the case - but I've seen a few laptops recently that have been 0.3" off.

...both of which would probably have battery life of 2 hours and be considerably larger and heavy ;) Laptops like this are designed to be "small, light, power efficient" - the processor is one of Intel's "ultra low voltage" which means it uses much much less power, although you do trade off performance.

If you want any old laptop, sure, that's fine. If you want something that is small, light and runs for a whole day on battery (7-10 hours), then a deal like this is what you're after

For that reason, you can't compare this deal with that laptop - they aren't really the same thing.

Currently own a Dell Inspiron 1525, wouldn't wish it on my greatest enemy mind. I'd love a new laptop (anything but Dell mind), but I just can't afford one.

My Dell has broke 3 times in 2 years, with the battery charger failing to charge a lot of the time.

The screen is a 16:9 aspect ratio with a 1366x768 resolution, I recommended this to a friend when it was 400 pounds which they went ahead with and I was quite impressed with it. Performance from t he CULV processor was fine for general use and definitely worth it for the benefits, the machine is reasonably thin and light, ran very quietly and batterylife was superb.

The only problem I had with it was that Quickset was interfering with Aero which was causing it to be disabled, stopping Quickset re-enabled Aero. All the media/volume buttons etc. still work it's just you don't get the graphical display on screen which I don't think is much of an issue.

That machine doesn't have a CULV processor though so it shouldn't be compared to this one - a CULV processor is a lower power version of the standard C2D processors which means the machines can be smaller as less cooling is required and batterylife is longer.

two quick queries..
1. can we add extra RAM to it in future or 3GB occupies all the slots?

I *think* it's a 5400rpm but it's a few weeks since I was on the machine so I couldn't say for sure.

Although I haven't checked I'd be pretty sure it's occupying all the slots as there's probably only two which would mean 2GB + 1GB sticks of ram.
