4 cell battery.... not ideal imo.

What you wanting for 179 quid? Lol

This is only a 7.5w CPU, the 4 cell is sufficient

I rarely use one any more but for the odd occasion that I do, I use a USB BD-ROM/DVD+RW drive (DVD drives are much cheaper)

Cell count is irrelevant, what matters is the milliampere-hour (mAh) rating.

Those videos show completely different Dell laptops to the one in this deal.

Here's a Dell Inspiron 15 with the same chassis as the one in this deal (this deal is 3531, the one in the video is 3521) and it clearly shows the panel and explains that the RAM and HDD are easily accessible under that panel >

I can ...... it's the word "Celeron" that does it ..........

That was a perfectly valid arguement in 1997 with the Celeron 266MHz and then the 2004 era Celeron's.......while this particular Celeron is low power and low performance compared to higher specced CPU's (obviously) it still represents amazing value.

We'd all be happy for you to give some links to other similar spec laptops that features a Haswell based Pentium, i3, i5 or i7 for this price

I bought a similar spec laptop a month ago and I have yet to find anything it is not capable of doing. Mind you, I don't use it for video editing or playing high intensity graphic games. A breeze for playing minecraft.

It has a HDMI 1.4a port and the Intel HD GPU should be able to handle movies at that resolution - just don't expect games to run at 1080p
It's a standard 2.5" SATA drive so an SSD will go in just fine

Awful screens though. At least Dell ones (on the whole) are bright and vibrant. Lenovo screens are terrible...unless they are IPS - and even then, they are not that bright.
Of course, they are great in pretty much every other regard.
  12. 118luke's avatar
Bargain bin - but for all those who claim to use a laptop for 'ONLY' word processing, emails and playing solitare it should be fine. Mind you, so will a £50 one from a market stall.

But of course - that never happens. almost every person i know who has bought a cheap laptop complains about it being slow in 12-18 months time. When they start to do bits of video editing or watch HD videos on youtube or play flash games etc.

I can only speak from my own experience. A T430, an X220 and an X230. Only the X230 had a decent screen (IPS) - but it just wasn't vibrant....not even compared to my mum's Fujitsu budget laptop with a standard TFT screen (viewing angles were excellent though).
Maybe I just had some bad luck - though I did try every which way to override any power settings that may have been throttling screen brightness.
They are great machines - and I'm sure the screens have improved in later models...

    cheapest laptop nonetheless.

cheaper than a chromebook and it's 15 inches with windows so can't really complain, for all those people who moaned about chromebooks this is the deal they should all be going for at this price, or will they now all say it's underpowered

Only one example is required to refute/rubbish this claim which was supplied by the poster along with an (admittedly somewhat abrupt) verdict on the claim made.

Ok both were partially incorrect. Anyway I flipped over this laptop and there's a panel which can be removed to access the RAM and HDD.
  17. deleted982571's avatar
Dell have confirmed it does have a webcam.
  18. deleted86857's avatar
I agree regarding replacing the HDD/RAM most laptops don't require lots of disassembly but to say all recent dells do is a bit misleading. I have worked with other branded laptops that are just as bad. The same with the Wi-Fi issues - dell don't make the cards they use the same cards as everyone else... so don't be any more worried.

The MASSIVE advantage dell have is they change the line-up very little and have lots of options for the machine - so there will be a HD screen for this laptop, in fact you could prob buy this, keep it a year or two and then find a secondhand I-Core motherboard to upgrade it for not a lot of money, a back lit keyboard and all that kinda thing. They are very configurable. And yeah they have bad laptops but then so do everyone else. I would say that this laptop and a cheap SSD would be enough for most people for day to day use.

Nobody has posted anything negative about Windows 8.1 yet, or wants to install Windows XP on this because they don't like Fisher Price bright colours stupid baby toy OS? And look, this is Windows 8.1 with Bing! I guess that helps keep the price down.
    This is quite tempting!

Would this be powerful enough to edit photos running Photoshop?

It has 4GB of RAM, of which 512MB is dedicated to the GPU so technically, yes...
The CPU however is quite slow so it might be a bit tedious while doing intensive operations.

This is a Bay Trail (Silvermont) Celeron, the N at the start gives it … This is a Bay Trail (Silvermont) Celeron, the N at the start gives it away, not the much faster Haswell Celeron. It's not even the quad core N29#0 variant. Relatively speaking it is as slow as some of the disastrous Celerons of the past (the Northwood celerons are the ones I remember). Of course, these days that matters less as any windows tablet user will tell you. Unfortunately this machine doesn't ship with an SSD like those tablets but comes with a slow hard drive. Like others I'm rather dubious about the value of this machine. Will it last you more than three years? While at this price you could say it doesn't matter, we should really be looking to get something that'll last as long as possible as long as it can be done with decent value for money.

A brand new laptop with genuine Windows for £180, does it really matter if it lasts 3 years? It'll probably last more. Do people that buy any budget tablets, phones or such like really consider lifespan these days? I suspect many do not.

I'm not saying I'd buy this laptop, I would spend more but does this represent value for money given what it does? I'd say it would be hard to beat unless you compared to refurbs or second hand.

I do feel it misleading of intel to give these Atom CPU's the Celeron name though.
  23. thabiz's avatar
Considering me and my dad have been using atom 1.6ghz netbooks for the past 4 years, and still use them now, I am sure something like this would make a night and day difference. Unless you play games or encode video then why do you need the power? We just google stuff and watch youtube videos mainly and you can do that on anything. Free anti virus is really good now and we get anti virus free with our bank anyway, using ccleaner and not downloading and installing rubbish is all you need to do to keep a PC running fine. HOT
  24. thabiz's avatar
CPU scores 937 or so on passmark, which is 3-4x as good as an atom, and better than the most powerful pentium 4 and equal to some of the core 2 duo's. Is there anything near this price that is a better deal, including refurbished etc?

Under the covers, Windows 8 is very good - it's just unfortunate that it has Noddy covers.
Try Start Menu 8 and change your media file associations (Windows 8's Metro Picture, Music & Video players are rubbish - you do still have Windows Photo Viewer and Media Player but they're not default).

Most things Metro don't suit a mouse but they are adddional to the core OS and not compulsory.
It's nice that you can run tablet apps / games too as many are free

Any advice on what stuff I can remove/add to get optimum performance? Is it still just the case of uninstalling bloatware or is there more to speeding up w8?

Yeah - pretty much remove all the cr@pware, including anti-virus (replace with Avast, etc.)
There's quite a few tweaks that you can do to get better performance, the most effective of which is disabling unnecessary startup items & services.
Do be careful though - try to stay away from the Microsoft services unless you know what you're doing.
As others have said, the most effective hardware upgrade you can make is an SSD - a 128GB (£50) will be enough for basic use but if your storage needs are greater, consider a larger SSD or even a hybrid drive.

If you do get another drive, you will have to clone the existing drive onto it so a USB caddy might be needed for the transfer

I think he might mean to download from torrents, etc. but instead of using cracks, simply use the key that came with your laptop.
A fresh install is sometimes good to clean things up but installing drivers, software and setting it up take time and effort.

Macrium Reflect Free or EaseUS Todo Backup Free will handle SSDs just fine and will bring your drive across as it is.
It may be necessary to have Windows optimize the SSD by running the Windows Experience Index...
Unfortunately, MS have removed the GUI functionality for WEI from Windows 8.1 but you can run it by typing "winsat prepop" into an Admin CMD prompt.
As it runs, it should turn off defragmentation and turn on TRIM.

Very surprising indeed. That's a hot buy for a similar spec, the Lenovo B series, the value business range is well made for less than £200. Enormous value for money because the Chinese made sacrifices to get this high quality product ex factory to western market as such low wages and long work hours.

I posted this in the deal for this laptop when it was £166, but it may still help anyone who buys it at this price.

If for some reason your FN keys function is reversed (holding the FN key allowing you to use the F1-12 keys, not the FN functions (eg. volume/brightness).

Follow these instructions to fix this.
Go to desktop mode in Windows 8
Hold the Windows key and press X
On the popup (lower left corner) click "Mobility Center"
Change the "Function Key Row" (behaviour) to 'Function Key' in the drop down box (mine was set at 'Multimedia Key')
Then just press the X in the corner to apply the change.

    Hope this helps.

Windows 8 keys are embedded into the systems BIOS, there are tools to get this from within windows however (I can't really link them, as Im not sure to the legitimacy of things like that being posted here).

You will not get any backup media, but you should get a restore partition that you can use to create a backup disk (in this instance the easiest would be a USB backup), just use the preinstalled Dell backup and recovery application to create a Reinstall Disk.
