4 cell battery.... not ideal imo.

What you wanting for 179 quid? Lol

This is only a 7.5w CPU, the 4 cell is sufficient

For anyone wondering about RAM & HDD upgrades, here's the rear of the Inspiron 15 3531 with the panel removed:

My 5 year old Dell keeps randomly freezing and it's starting to become a bind. I find myself considering a cheap laptop just so we have something we can use without losing work. It'd have to handle Mincraft for the kids too. I wonder if this is up to it...

I bought a similar spec laptop a month ago and I have yet to find anything it is not capable of doing. Mind you, I don't use it for video editing or playing high intensity graphic games. A breeze for playing minecraft.

Would this output 1080 via hdmi for watching movies on the TV

And would it be easy to change the hd to a SSD drive?

It has a HDMI 1.4a port and the Intel HD GPU should be able to handle movies at that resolution - just don't expect games to run at 1080p
It's a standard 2.5" SATA drive so an SSD will go in just fine :)

Brilliant, so would you happen to know if it's simply just a flip over the laptop, undue a few screws for the hard drive Bay and swap over the hd?

I don't own one so I haven't seen the underside of it but going on my experience of Dell laptops, it should be very easy to swap out the HDD and the RAM.

Brilliant, very tempted, other than cpu, ram and hd are all Inspiron 15 laptop chassis , laptop screens, keyboard, general build all the same?

I can find reviews but they tend to be for higher Cpu specs, but I'm really more interested in the build, screen etc

No cd drive though?! All the laptop on great offers like this never have an optical drive. I know it's old school but don't think I could manage without one. Great deal though

I rarely use one any more but for the odd occasion that I do, I use a USB BD-ROM/DVD+RW drive (DVD drives are much cheaper)

Cell count is irrelevant, what matters is the milliampere-hour (mAh) rating.

Oh dear, a 7 year old laptop would be quicker, a second hand laptop such as a lovely Lenovo X or T series costs less, still has warranty
possibly a longer warranty!

Awful screens though. At least Dell ones (on the whole) are bright and vibrant. Lenovo screens are terrible...unless they are IPS - and even then, they are not that bright.
Of course, they are great in pretty much every other regard.

Bargain bin - but for all those who claim to use a laptop for 'ONLY' word processing, emails and playing solitare it should be fine. Mind you, so will a £50 one from a market stall.

But of course - that never happens. almost every person i know who has bought a cheap laptop complains about it being slow in 12-18 months time. When they start to do bits of video editing or watch HD videos on youtube or play flash games etc.

I can only speak from my own experience. A T430, an X220 and an X230. Only the X230 had a decent screen (IPS) - but it just wasn't vibrant....not even compared to my mum's Fujitsu budget laptop with a standard TFT screen (viewing angles were excellent though).
Maybe I just had some bad luck - though I did try every which way to override any power settings that may have been throttling screen brightness.
They are great machines - and I'm sure the screens have improved in later models...

I'm typing on an X220 now with a LG IPS screen, tis lovely and mega bright. Even an old X61t here is nice and bright, good blacks and accurate colours.

Might have been bad luck, I tend to get that with LCD tv's LOL, panel lottery.

Also on all IBM/Lenovo you must change the BIOS option to FULL for LCD Brightness, or they will be dull.

There's no mention on Dell's page but the US MS Store mentions that the Inspiron 15 3531 (this one I think) has a 720p webcam.

VIP discount is what used to be the employee perks program, so if your company has an agreement with dell you get some 10% off vouchers.

http://www.dell.com/learn/uk/en/ukdhs1/campaigns/dell-vip-home-page?c=uk&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=mn

I've still got one of mine so this is really tempting, after a good few years service our old dell laptop has finally died, it really only gets used for my girlfriend using the internet so this would do us i think.

Would there be much gain with this spec to changing to a SSD, other than quick boot times we really don't need the performance elsewhere as it's mostly internet browsing so not sure if it's totally worth doing. Ethernet is the only thing i would like but at this price i'm sure I can spend £5 and get a usb ethernet adapter

I didn't do that BIOS trick. Damn :)
Really though, that setting should not be hidden in bios. It's an unnecessary cause of frustration....and has people like me recommending other devices in favour of what are bulletproof pieces of tech!
