Hi,

My first post!

I'm looking to buy my first laptop have been looking at this deal for a few days now. I'm also considering buying the Acer Aspire 5720 (Acer Aspire 5720-302G08Mi Laptop - LX.AVG0X.176, http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_5720-302G08Mi_Laptop_LX.AVG0X.176/version.asp). Specs are:

# Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 - 2GHz (x2), 800MHz FSB, 4MB L2 Cache
# RAM: 2GB DDR2
# Hard Drive: 80GB Serial ATA 5400rpm
# Screen: 15.4" Widescreen TFT (1280x800) with CrystalBrite Technology
# Optical Drive: DVD±RW Super Multi Double Layer
# Graphics: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100
# Wireless LAN: 802.11a/b/g
# Bluetooth: No
# Battery Life (Depending on Use): Upto 4 Hours
# Weight: 2.8kg
# Warranty: 1 Year Collect and Return
# Operating System: Windows Vista Home Premium
# Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000
# DVI Output
# S-Video Output
# Firewire Port
# ExpressCard Slot
# Card Reader (MMC, MS, MS-pro, SD, XD)
# Built In Speakers

The only differences I can see are (Inspiron 1520 first / Acer 5720 second) hard disk - 160 GB / 80 GB, processor - Core 2 Duo Processor T7250 2 MB L2 cache / Core 2 Duo T7300 4MB L2 Cache and bluetooth / no bluetooth.

Questions:

1) Would there be a noticeable difference in power looking at the processor type and L2 cache of both machines?

2) I want to install Linux (Ubuntu) on my new laptop when I've finally decided which one to buy but I recently read a post that the Acer Gemstone series laptops can not be reformatted due the Acers needing the e-powermanagement as a compulsory requirement! (something to do with overheating from what I remember). Can anyone confirm whether this is actually the case?

3) Can the Acer be reformatted and Linux installed?

4) Is it necessary to have to run all the Acer utilities installed by default. I have my suspicions that the answer is NO!?

5) Which laptop would you choose and why? Can't make my mind up so need some advice here please?!?

Many thanks.

Joe Maldon.

Does it's soundcard have a true line-in port? is it combined with the microphone port?
And anyone know if it would support audio monitoring/playback during recording through it (like for multitrack recording in software like adobe audition)?

I think you will find the dell has just a mic input and doubt it can handle much other than a mic on that port, though you may get more info from dell on that.
The manual with specs is here

ah thanks. So with an external sound card, it should be alright for multitrack recording/playback simultaneously?

10% code doesn't seem to work. Adding the truelife screen brings it to £499 then the code doesn't work, any advice?
