MikeT. Sorry Dell got rid of most of its price inconsistencies (or so it seems). You have always had brilliant deals on HUKD, thanks to you for a nice Inspiron 6400 (when it was still cheap) and a great Inpiron 530 desktop!:w00t:

Whole point of this reply - do you have any info re the built-in camera for the 1520? I quite like the idea, you don't seem so keen when you discuss the optional extras ...

I'm fairly sure that dell will still have good offers and make errors, it just seems at this time that they are being extra careful to maximise the profits.

No I'm sorry I dont have any more info than is stated on dells site, I guess that because I didnt include it in my upgrades post your taking it that I dont think its a good camera?

I only list upgrades that dont hike the price too much and give realistic bang for buck in my opinion. The current choice of Black or White cover with camera for £29 leaping to £58 for another colour strikes me as excessive considering the cost to dell of the camera, but its your choice of course as whatever I post is always just my own opinion

Can you still get £70 off for new customers?

Yes possibly but its for phone customers only so no Quidco 5% and its only for orders over £599 pre VAT so you would need to upgrade some to get to the point where its valid.

Do you think its worth spending £100 more and getting this dell or should I get this asus from ebuyer which is more in my price range? -->http://www.ebuyer.com/product/134522

im very tempted by this but why dont they offer a wireless n option?
#10
They dont offer a wirless N option as its out of stock. The second it comes in stock it will be available.

Robcpfc79 a few days ago a sony laptop was posted that was around the same price as the ASUS one but alot more advanced in terms of the spec. Use the search function to find it.

The one you are looking at is £611 and I wont recommend it as Dell have messed up by making the ram 3gig with just 2 slots which means it wont interleave properly as they should both be the same size, had they kept it at 2gig and dropped the price some it would be a contender, but from the home site.
#14
ahaaa! cheers for that, i knew it had to be something really simple. still, it is early though!

Questions for MikeT please...

Sorry newbie here and definitely not savy techie wise. You say to upgrade the CPU but I don't see that on your upgrades at #2 unless the nVidia graphics upgrade to 256 is what you mean?

Likely use for me is access to internet/e-mail from wi-fi locations in France/Spain and short-term storage of photos (probably only a few hundred pics at any one time) - Is the standard HDD adequate or should I upgrade to 250gb, bearing in mind I'll need some add-ons to bring up to £599 for the 10% off.

I'll probably go for the camera in black case @ £29 for possible future "speak to family from abroad" use. I assume the mike would be built-in?

Shouldn't need the bluetooth extra if I only use a hard-wired mouse?

In my PC at home I have subscribed to BT's monthly deal for Norton protection. Do you know if that can be extended somehow to my laptop/notebook?

The laptop will sometimes be used simultaneously with the PC at home, so I suppose I'd need a wireless router for home, unless BT would supply that to keep me subscribing?

As an alternative, could I hard-wire the Laptop into an extension telephone in the house?

Thanks very much for reading all this, I don't know who else to ask!
[mod]#22
Oxter:
I Upgraded the cpu from 1.5Ghz base setting to 2Ghz
Default hard drive would be fine but upgrade if you need to get the price up I suppose.
Yes there is a mike in the lid next to the camera.
OK no BT needed unless you want to pass stuff from your phone maybe?
Ask BT on the norton question.
Yes wireless router would be the way to give you freedom to roam at home.
If your router has more than one port you can patch into it but I guess it hasnt so WIFi with a new router will sort it.
Phone socket will only give you dial up slow modem which you wont like.

Cheers

would this laptop not work with my wireless router? would I need to buy anything else such as one of the cards?

Its already WiFi enabled so if you have a wifi router then you need nothing else to connect the two.

How does the build quality of Dell laptops compare to Sony VAIOs? I was just about to order this: http://www.empiredirect.co.uk/content/products/details/index~modelcode~SON-VGNAR51E~dept~computers~subdept~LAPTOPS~brand~sony.htm

Until I saw this! 15.4" is preferable, but I like the optical out and HDMI port on the sony. I had a play with one in a shop and it seems very well built but was wondering if dells are equally well put together! Ta

Is the 8600m gt any good for 3d autocad work?
#27
Delivered already - very impressive. Seems like a really nice system. I have two build quality gripes mind. The lid catch is woefully flimsy and doesn't really close the lid "tight" (mine is without webcam) and the battery is also pretty floppy. Going to try to resolve the latter with a bit of insulation tape (shouldn't have to do that on a £600+ laptop but the hassle of sending back far outweighs a little time fiddling with a bit of packing.

Very annoyed I didn't add bluetooth, my fault mind!

I ordered a 1520 on Wednesday night, due for delivery this morning, the price has now come down by almost £40, If I return this one and order the better priced one, would it cost me anything, I can't see any info on the Dell site and am reluctant to spend ages on the 0870 number for customer service.

thanks

[mod]#29
Phone (say no to 0870) and tell them you intend to return it and reorder as the same spec one is now £40 cheaper and see what they say.
#30
Hi Mike, thanks for the advice, I used the number in saynoto0870 and eventually got transferred to a cs rep in India, he cancelled the order without problem and has advised me to refuse delivery if the carrier tries to deliver today as they have asked the carrier to return it to Dell. There was no charge involved in cancelling and I will get a full refund, so I will now go ahead and order again through quidco.

Even better, the price of the wireless N card is only £20 today, so the spec I got was
Inspiron 1520,
black cover + webcam
2GHZ core 2 duo processor,
1GB RAM - (I decided it was cheaper to get 1GB and to buy 2 x 1GB Dimms separately, rather than going for the 2GB upgrade for £40)
8600GT graphics
1440x900 screen
160GB HDD
wireless N card (only £20 today)

cost was £581 delivered and should get about £21 from quidco, so all in all I thought it was a pretty good deal.
I was thinking about the bluetooth upgrade but it was £29 and you can get the Dell 355 bluetooth module on ebay for £16

I think the OP said you get 10% off if you get the price up to £599 - maybe you did that?
