Dell are being very tight right now and a bit silly too. The Dell Vostro 1700 with 2Ghz c2d cpu is £646 delivered but they upped the ram to 3gig and as we know in order to get dual channel bandwidth capability, both slots must contain memory modules and they must be of the same size and configuration.
So 1x1gig and 1x2gig doesnt quite cut it for me. Now if they had chopped the price by £47 instead and left the ram at 2gig we would all be happy.

As soon as they sort themselves out I will post

is it worth paying the money and getting more warranty? with every post you make Mike you always say drop to minimum warranty, is this do with the price to keep it low or are Dell machines really good so all you need is 1 year. after the 1 year could you then arrange for more cover?

By dropping the warranty to minimum on every deal it lets members get a better idea of whats a good deal, sort of levels the playing field.

Dells from my experiance dont go wrong very often but for anyone wanting more warranty Dell offer a service where you can go back to them for an extension any time in the first year and they will even contact you sometimes with offers for extensions just before it expires. I recently extrnded one of my laptop warranties by 3yrs next business day for around £33/yr.

I thought the dell deals seemed to be drying up, good model and reliable brand, definitely worth the money, I am waiting for the 17" Inspirons to get some good deals on them, with a gt graphics card.
My colleague has just had an inspiron with a 17" screen delivered and I am coveting that right now!:whistling:

MikeT, what do you think of the XPS 420? I am not sure whether it is good value for money. I'm quite tempted but the little screen on the case etc seem unnecessary. Would I be better off with a Precision model?

I have no experiance of Precision as its really business kit, come to that I have yet to see an XPS 420 in the flesh so any comments I made on that would be from reading others reviews. Its a replacement for the 9200, but I would like to see the prices for it lowered somewhat.
#9
I agree about the prices. Think I might wait until after Christmas. Thanks

If this had 2gb of ram then it would be a decent deal

As Dell have now given us a 10% off over £599 voucher I have upgraded the original deal so it can now use the voucher.

Having owned plenty of Dells I am happy to point our members in their direction, I've never even seen a Zoostorm so cant really form much of an opinion other than on the listed spec and customer comments.
Now of course if they want to send me some to review

The spec and price on the one you listed looks good.
#17
looking good, do they not do the remote control anymore?

I looked at this system, but can't upgrade graphics to GT....now if that could have been done it would have been a contender for me...

I bought a 1520 when these deals came around, then avoided the forums for a week in case I saw something cheaper ;) The 8600GT is excellent, plays Bioshock, Crysis and C&C3 full res, smoothly at medium detail, jerky at full. I'm very impressed from a laptop...

Thats useful to know, I want Bioshock and my current laptop isn't suitable, personally I would buy a tower pc, but my missus likes the tidyness of a laptop, with a budget of below £700 this looks great..but i really want a 17" screen...hope this one lasts until the January sales!

I upgraded the screen to 1440x900 (£10) and am very impressed by it's clarity and brightness. To get the games working properly I installed the latest (at the time) 169.09 drivers from laptopvideo2go.com. Drivers provided by Dell are ancient, as are most other laptop manufacturers. In fact the 1520 kept crashing when playing rFactor (car game) until I installed the 169.09's, with Vista reporting the graphics card had temporarily switched off! That did only happen on that 1, relatively obscure game though...

Is this true of computers bought through their outlet store as well?

(As an aside, thanks for all the great Dell deals you post! )

early this morn i went on to have a look, specced a laptop and tested the codes and both worked. before i could order i had to feed my daughter. during this time my wife went to check her emails and used the page i had the laptop on. now i've gone back to try and get it and can't??

Cant quite see how the £70 first buy can have worked for you as its a phone in only discount code.

The £70 off code is "FIRSTBUY-0135", tell them you read it off one of their leaflets and it said the code would be good up until the 28th

They're going to do whatever they can but keep insisting, the code isn't to expire for a day or so.

the manager in dell would only do this for £768 which isn't as good as online. was on phone for 40mins and he refused to go any lower just kept offering me cheaper warranty and support.

didn't really want to spend this much, had a price of 600 in mind so might edit this to try to reduce price ie take web cam off.

mike t seems to be the man in the know so if you think theres any thing i could try or take off can you let me know.

What?! You should have asked the manager if they were having a laugh trying to charge you £50 more than the price you get if you placed the order online. Just use the 7LZTMMW5L0M$WT code to get 10% off to get £70~ off and then use quidco for a further 5% (excl. vat) saving which is £30~ cashback and in the end you should save roughly £100 off your £718.21 which should bring the total to near your budget.

I tried ringing through and getting both the 10% and £70 off my total of £702, but it seems you can only use one so you would be better off with 10% off and possible 5% quidco.

Theres a good point here, if you can only use either the 10% off or the £70 welcome discount, make sure you do the maths before clicking confirm order ie the less than £700 use first order code, more than £700 use 10% off code...don't forget, in case you could as it gets mentioned every post Quidco at 5% before VAT, a Brucey Bonus.
#37
I know this sounds dumb but how, what and where do you apply the welcome discount?

My bad, I should read more:) Thank you:D
