Dual Core processors are not best for laptops.
Core2Duo are the best for laptops as they use less power and result is long lasting battery on core2duos than Dual cores.

Explain. I always thought Dual core were stepping too.

Bigger cache helps a little but not a lot for general usage in that extra cache also uses extra power.

I dont know the technicalities but for sure Core2Duo are always better than DualCore processors. If it is for laptops look for Core2Duo or if for desktops it does not matter (in the sense only the clock speed matters).
my understanding is
Pentium<
in terms of power usage by chip......

I think either core on a core2duo chip can share/use all of the cache associated with both of the cores (which makes them faster.)

The cores on a dual core chip can only use their own cache.
