Make sure you understand the iCore rebranding and key technology offerings with it.

Software for home users still has a long way to go - to really take advantage of multi-core and hyper-threading technologies.

In specific i3 doesn't have the Turbo Boost Speed Step. So, it won't save you any battery and is still a 2 core CPU with HT.

http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=3585

Also these iCore products have been designed to offer something or the other at all price points.

Doesn't mean deal is not hot. It's still a decent one.

How come all these dell laptops never come with a double layer dvd writer. Or am I missing something here?
#7
It's also got a 5400rpm hard drive, which has put me off some of the studio range. I opted instead for one of the Vostro's because, though it had a lesser processor (P7570), it seemed a more balanced system with a 7200rpm drive. I canot fathom out why Dell do not offer an upgrade for the hard drive, though no doubt it would be a rip-off upgrade if it did.

Good system though, HD excepted.

No option to upgrade the builtin Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator HD, kills it for me...

for the price it would cost to upgrade, just get a better specced studio

lol - dell just had a redesign?
#10
for the cost of the laptop its good.

For those complaining about the graphics...this laptop wouldnt really cut it anyways even with a decent graphics card. Pretty hard to upgrade a laptops graphics card.

This is for a non gamer, with a decent price and performance

No point in quad core, stupid people buy them

you just shot yourself in the foot! :whistling: you should not be allowed to have an account as you have not yet reached a certain level of understanding of computerised systems, i am wondering if it was really you that pressed that big shiny button on you single/dual core pentium 1 MMX system...:whistling:...

Quad core pcs > quad core laptops. Nearly always better and cheaper so no point going wuad atm on a laptop.
#16
I just bought one of these literally two days ago for like £40 odd extra, can i cancel and re-order? :p
#17
I have an i3 330M in my Samsung R780. Quite a nippy CPU, scores 6.0 in Win7.

This seems like a decent little laptop for the price.
#18
ultimately this isn't going to blow everyones socks off but for the average user who plans to keep their machine more than 5 minutes its ideal with the new processor and ddr3 and considering its a new chipset, which usually commands a premium price anyway, this is a pretty good price. If you do want something with a bit more graphics power then look at some of the studios
#19
Just what i've been looking for. Ordered with 3% quidco - thanks.

You probably just misread that statement somewhere before, then it just kinda leaked out, that happens :p

Dell have a 7 working day return policy, but you will have to pay for the collection carriage cost (may be £20)

The CPU on this one is way better. But Compaq has a dedicated graphics chip. I would go for DELL.

not to mention that the dell is ddr3 rather than 2!

My comment on quad core being pointless for the average user still stands.

Please enlighten me as to how an average standard PC user will benefit from 4 cores over 2, currently, with current sw on the market.

I sort of agree to your comment. For a person who is browsing web, watching movies, and using office.. there shouldn't be much difference. But if you are a graphic designer who uses Coral Draw or Photoshop, then the difference will be massive.

You didnt say that though did you?

Your original post was

"No point in quad core, stupid people buy them "

So if I use my computer for 3D modelling, then I would be stupid for buying quad core?

that is a fair point however if you do want something that is a bit quicker then most of the fastest processors are quad core anyway. The i3 is a dual core chip with HT anyway, further adding to the pointlessness of your comment

Good point. But I dont think only stupid people buy quad-core. If you ever tried duo-core and quad-core you will notice the performance for sure. I wouldn't look back on anything less than quad-core for PC. But for the laptop, duo-core good enough due to the price wise. Beside you can't get quad-core laptop at this price anyway.

DDR3 is no faster than DDR2 (it can go higher in theory but currently it is no faster) - its only real advantage is a slight reduction in power consumption.

i was more referring to that ddr3 is set to get cheaper over the coming months while ddr2 seems to get higher and higher in price

Are you sure? My 4 year old laptop came with DVD RW DL.. can someone confirm if this Dell doesn't do Double layer DVD's?
#33
Would this laptop be the most up to date for this type of price? Are there any other deals for around £400 that better it? (The reason I ask, is that I've charged with finding a laptop for a woman I work with..........)

Thanks : )

My over 2 year old Vostro 1500 has a DL DVD drive.

I got my laptop today. Overall I am quite happy.
Windows Experience index is as follows:

Processor: 6.2
Memory: 5.5
Graphics: 4.3
Gaming graphics: 5.1
Primary Hard disk: 5.9

The graphics index was quite surprising. I had ATI X1600 mobility before and it gave 3.4.
Played COD4 and it worked well upto 1280x760 resolution with medium/low settings.

The keyboard is a bit 'different' but I hope I will get used to it.
And it has a DVD RW DL drive..

I've ordered mine, only downside is that fact that Dell takes ages to deliver.

@ the user above, how many days approx. did it take to arrive?

The initial estimate was around 14 days but it came in 6 days.
#38
Oh right, that's not bad. My estimated time is 14 days too. Don't know what's happening now, the status now says; CALL LOCK OUT. What ever that means.

you will just get a call from dell. their order tracking system is quite odd!!

I received the call, getting mine shipped on Mon. Yeah, the tracking system is very confusing.
