Good deal, but what happened to the sensibly priced 17" i3 dells?

Not a bad spec - however, I don't see Ubuntu as a downside! I've used both Windows 7 and Ubunutu and I much prefer Ubuntu - it runs faster, is less prone to viruses and is free for life... Anyone who has been through the tortuous (and expensive) XP -> Vista -> Windows 7 upgrades should give Ubuntu a chance.

I agree. I have just tried Ubuntu 10.10 on a P3 700Mhz (a little slow for youtube/flash usage) but its looks very slick and usable. Not impressed with the lack of VLC though as the built in media player at first glance (not really given it a go) doesnt seem up to much.

Havent yet tried Kubunutu or Xbuntu though...

However for more than simple office work and web usage, I still need Windows I am afraid.

Seems like a good deal! Does anyone know how to find this particular laptop deal via the search on Dell's site? I'd like to go in through Quidco.

[Edit] Found out the answer to my own question! From the Dell homepage, click 'For Home' in the top navigation. Half-way down the left of the next page, click 'As Advertised PCs'. The e-value code is then 305-N00N5007.

Wound up ordering this one, thanks OP! Will see if the Quidco tracks.

I'm surprised this hasn't gotten a little hotter actually, this is a little higher specced (i3-370, 3GB RAM) than similarly priced i3 laptops I've seen recently. I suppose the lack of Windows can be an issue.

Bought the W7 one for £429, cheers.

This does not mention any discounts or special offers, so is it the normal price?

Install it with a couple of clicks using the Software Centre.

I don't need Windows for anything. But then again I don't play shoot-em-ups.

This Dell offer(The W7 version anyway) has been going for a while. The Laptops are not actually made by Dell they made in China by a firm who the likes of Dell, Acer and even HP outsource too. That's why you can only get them in black. I should mention though here that the build quality is excellent.

I bought the W7 version last week as i got a £30 corporate discount through my work and all in all it's a very good spec for the price. The only things i am not that happy with is the battery which drains extremely fast even for a Laptop and the fact that's it not got a dedicated graphics card for playing FM 2011 but these are minor glitches.

I like the look of this model but I am put off by the number of disatisfied Dell customers writing bad reviews all over the internet. Anyone have any personal experience with Dell?

You could probably replace "Dell" with any other PC manufacturer at this price range and find a similar spread of opinions in internet chat. Just look at the opinions you get here on just about any brand of anything...

I've got this on my desk and it looks well built, just ran all the updates etc and it works fine. Really pleased with it.
#25
I have 2 laptops from Dell, excellent customer service and excellent computers. Would recommend to family/friends.

I'm very tempted by this, looks perfect. Their website seems to be broken though as it just continues to load when I click continue or buy. Can you direct me how to find this deal through their website? I can only find the version with windows.

Is this the same laptop (specs etc) as the one I bought instore at Argos on Saturday for £499?

If so, haven't I paid quite a lot more?

Yes and yes.

Thinking of recommending this for a non-techy friend. He does need good battery life though and has taken back a couple of laptops in the last month. Someone said battery life is bad. What is the average battery uptime in hours for a typical use in W7, of say surfing the net and no heavy CPU/devices intensive use apps or sound/video play?

Also any reason(s) one should go for this deal as opposed to: ASUS X52F-EX486V

Thanks.

Yes I know but Acers, not bad as I have one, are not as solidly built as Asus or this Dell. Unless the price difference was a lot more.
suspended#35
you really should put Ubuntu in the title, nice deal though.

With which code? This deal is just a regular Dell link and works fine with Quidco - you probably want to try using one of the other discount codes listed above.
