Would appreciate any comments on this or the I3 model . Even though Dell have messed me about (terrible Customer Service) , I may still consider buying one as I cant find a 17" of this spec in this price range (don't want a refurb) .

Brand new http://www.dell.com/uk/p/inspiron-17-5748-laptop/pd?oc=cn74812&model_id=inspiron-17-5748-laptop should be direct link for the I5 version . Coupon code at top of the page . Strange ! that's the link I put when I posted it -it appears to have been changed to the home page .

I think these are new and you need to read the reviews by the people who bought them.

Hi Mods - Could you put my post link back to http://www.dell.com/uk/p/inspiron-17-5748-laptop/pd?oc=cn74812&model_id=inspiron-17-5748-laptop. At some stage after posting it was changed to the dell home page . Confusing ,especially on mobile . Cheers

Prefer to get i5 4th gen with large screen and 6gb
maybe re read your first statement then decide if you need the later. A single core laptop with 2gb of ram would be enough for excell work and internet.

A standard 2.5" laptop drive which is 1tb cost about £50 and a 120gb ssd one costs about the same, so there is no reason for ssd laptops to not cost the same. Just looks better being a bigger size. Best idea is to buy a laptop with a 500gb or 1tb drive and sell it (becasue other people would want to upgrade to a size like that), then buy an ssd yourself (really easy upgrade)

It depends on which Inspiron series your looking at. The 7000 series have great solid build quality but the 3000 series is very budget orientated and have a cheap feel to them. This 5000 series offers pretty decent quality that most would find more then acceptable.

In terms of performance you would have to compare model by model.

That's why I'm undecided - "bought" 2 so far -both cancelled without telling me (maybe I got too good a deal and they wouldn't honour it -but twice !)

I'd be a bit nervous of doing that on a new machine oO Is the price difference really because manufacturers have to get rid of their old stock of mechanical hard drives before putting in SSDs at a reasonable price ?

Don't seem to be.
It's more the general buying public has fixated (or the manufacturers think they are fixated on) storage size over the correctly discerned benefits of an SSD. And the marketing efforts of the companies have failed to adequately explain the difference/benefits.
So they just go for the max storage they can > HDD. Which seems illogical to me as I can't see the general user having needs of reams of space. But there you go.

If it was me I'd take the DVD drive out and put an SSD in as well as the HDD :{ who even uses discs nowadays anyway :p )

That sounds rather drastic surgery ,I was hoping to fit my Betamax video tapes in ;)

DELL is horrible. Cancel my orders saying because of the parts are not longer produced, so, why they display the computer on the web?

Lenovo have a huge range from toys to some of the best (with eye watering prices at the top end)
Sony normally command a premium for the name, not noted for the best reliabilty.
Inspiron is the consumer line from Dell, generally reasonable value.
From my experience the best site is the Dell Outlet. I have bought a number of machines there and have had no problems.
If you are prepared to spend a bit more look for a Latitude model on the Outlet (in the Business section). The Latitudes are Dell's business line, and sometimes you can find real bargains for very high spec machines, with excellent specs and build, together with the Dell 3yr NBD warranty.

Dell pre sales are also pathetic. I wanted to buy a Dell laptop some time ago, I had a few questions and I requested somebody to call me back twice. They never bothered calling me.

Just so you know, it was a £2000 machine I was interested in. If I were you I wouldn't bother with these cowboys.

You must have had the same "Account Manager" I had - pathetic pre sales , 2 x orders cancelled (lack of parts !) .Didnt bother telling me ,I had to ring up to find out . Its put me off Dell ,at the moment probably wont get this one -solely because of the way I've been messed around by them .

yip, what I think is that because the price they expected should be the price without the discount code. So they will cancel any order which they thought is not profitable.

I ordered the i3 that was a good deal around fathers day. They sent an order acknowledgment. Phoned them a few days later to find out when it would be delivered and was told someone would call back. Of course, they never did. So phone back a few days later still only to be told that the order had been cancelled as the parts were old stock even though it wasn't a custom built laptop. They didn't even have the courtesy to send an email to let me know my order had been cancelled. Rubbish customer service imo

The hell? Did u lot order in 1 particular month or something when they were changing stock? Ordered 2 laptops from Dell and both of them came through sweetly, both are around 2 years old now. I personally cant fault dell, but id be interested to know if u all were ordering when they were changing their models in the same month.

I got a great dell deal from here a couple years ago, was a great spec Vostro.
Have to say though, the build quality of these dells is terrible. I didn't take my laptop anywhere but my desk, and the case began to warp near the cd tray, the keyboard keys fall off very easily, single key replacements were a fortune. The touchpad sunk, and the left button ceased to click properly.
The backlit keyboard was nice, but my current lenovo's keyboard is far better, nicer build an variable brightness , much easier to see.

You might say, "that's fine, I'll use a usb mouse and keyboard" (wouldn't bother with the bluetooth, there are known issues with bluetooth interfering with the wifi on these).
But my biggest issue was the charger, twice the connector warped inside the port, the first time it ripped the actually port off the mainboard, had to wait 5 weeks for the laptop to be repaired the first time, 3 weeks the second time, and they sent it back with a faulty 'refurbished' motherboard, had overheating issues and and bluescreens ever since. The battery failed within the first year, but was told it wasnt covered by warranty, despite it giving a fault due to the charger, not just deteriorating over time. The new battery was quoted at £150...crazy.

I ended up getting rid of it, and the only thing I miss was the finger print reader, really wish they were standard.

I bought two other laptops, a Lenovo and a Medion neither of which were considered great laptop companies in my eyes, but both have better build quality over the dell, and the lenovo is probably the best laptop I've owned, better than the Sony's, Dells etc. This one only cost me £400.

Yup same for me , eventually got hold of the "Account Manager " and put in an order for a different model ,but demanded the "now expired" Fathers Day discount be honoured . Eventually they agreed -job done . 2 weekslater I noticed ,order cancelled again . 2 different models -only thing in common - both cancelled without informing me !

Two cancellations, 2 different models- 2 weeks apart - neither time informed me by email or phone .Had to find out myself - basically ran out of parts ! 4 days ,and 10 days respectively after taking my order .

Its pretty decent price for spec.... but the processor is an ULV which makes it underpowered for my personal tastes and so NO good for me.

Anyone else with the same should look here:
