Mike, has this deal been beaten in the last few months? Was thinking of the Vostro 1700 but this may be better.

Dell dont make it easy for me to keep track of all the deals and prices, for instance the ecodes were all changed recently and spec changes also confuse any form of price watching, but I would think you would find it hard other than a misprice to beat the prices we are seeing this week on high end kit, the 10% voucher and free delivery are making the top end deals drop considerably in price.

The Vostro 1700 I posted does have a better CPU but this has other advantages ;-)

I just specced this one with the same cpu and it's still cheaper plus if i add quidco it's just a tadge over 600. A good deal I would say.
I'm going to go for it.

Thanks MikeT, fellow man of Kent. Which part are you from? I'm just near to (Tr)Ashford.

I cant say, those men in dark glasses from Dell are still looking for someone to blame for the fall in profits :w00t:

Well if it wasn't for you they'd probably have a cashflow issue too.
Come now - a little local clue?

Great deal...I was about to order the quadcore desk top deal, when my missus said she wants to move our computer stuff into the spare room, and so now she wants a laptop again to replace our knackered one....I reckon this is a blinding deal for under £600 with 256meg graphics.
Have some heat

Very nice spec. Was pretty sure I was going to go for the 1520 but now I'm thinking for the extra £70 I can get dedicated graphics and a 17" monitor....choices, choices....!
#8
Thanks Mike, just ordered for my son with a few upgrades and saved a fortune,
Also looking for a basic one for me around £350. Can you tell me if there is much difference between Vostro & Inspiron as I'm totally confused after reading various threads. Thanks again

Does anyone know the difference between the nVidia® GeForce™ Go 8400M GS with 128MB DDR2 and the nVidia® GeForce™ Go 8600M GT with 256MB DDR2? Is it worth the extra money?

Thanks for any advice

Cannot give a definitive/technical answer, however, basically if you play any modern games the GT is the one to go for, if you are playing older/basci games then the gs is ok, the gt will give more modern games a damn good go....although Crysis may be a bit much. For the extra money it is in my opinion worth it.

My turn....if I go for the two hard drives option, how are they set up? ie is one identical to the other for back up?
Don't easily understand Raid 0, 1 etc

Crysis with minimal eye candy runs ok at 1440x900 out of the box on my 1700 so my 10yr old tester tells me.

The £571.95 is right for the spec, as per the post title, the £549.01 is the standard price before upgrading the spec. but you need to spend £599 plus for the 10% discount to work

From the first post
Increase the spec to include the 2Ghz cpu and 256meg graphics.

Thanks Mike i've been waiting a while for a special deal like this and i finally ordered this one a gaming laptop with 2Ghz core2duo with 8600gt 256MB graphics for £571.95 then hopefully a quidco discount of 5%. :)
Your a top geezer Mike thanks

just been doing a bit of research and it seems people prefer AMD. Any have any comments on this?

Really? AMD chips are often cheaper, however, performance wise the core2duos are in a league of their own....perhaps it is that support the underdog thing....mind you it can change, I know some of the AMD chips due out are supposedly fairly strong. PCPro favour Intel chips, pound for power over AMD.

I hear AMD are so strong that Intel have delayed the release of their latest cpu's to the marketplace :whistling:

Have a read of this. It compares the various notebook graphics options. Until I found that I didn't really have a clue what each chipset was capable of. Note that I believe their test scores come from the DDR3 version of the card which is faster.

I ordered this spec (with 9 cell battery) last week based on Mike's other thread here and the post by firearcade. Delivery isn't expected until the 21st.
#27
Intel are steps ahead of amd according to the reviews of the phenom chips or so ive read. Voted hot hot hot
#28
A great deal - well spotted Mike T. Heat added.
Out of curiosity I increased this to full spec and it comes out about £100 cheaper than the same deal on a Vostro. AND then there's the 10% voucher to reduce it still further.
Can't help wondering why the Inspirons are so much cheaper than the same spec Vostros?
#29
Anyone know what the 6 cell battery is like or would i be better opting for the 9 cell version
#30
Two of the biggest power drainers on a laptop are the screen and GPU, when its a dedicated one like that. And since these aspects are both high spec on this, 6 cell wont go very far im afraid.
#31
is screen upgrade to WUXGA+ worth additional £££
#32
i'm sorry this will be the first laptop that iv bought so i don't much about them. Jamadaia thanks for the reply but any idea how long a 6 cell may last? 1.5 hours would probably be enough for my usage.
#33
It should last around that time i would expect.
#34
Been looking for a long time and decided to take the plunge as this was such a good deal. Thanks Mike.
#35
Hey could anyone recomend something similar to this but with a 15.4" screen.

I recently brought a fujutsi siemands for £500 of ebuyer but got a virus within 24hrs so sent it back and got my refund today

{so the hunt goes for another laptop...oh joy!)
#36
well I was looking at that laptop the other day for £230ish and then get a desktop PC, but I think I will just get this instead. If it plays BF2 thats all i care about. BTW do Dell take your money as soon as you order or when the item is dispatched as I am waiting for some money to go into my account and don't want to miss out on the deal?
#37
How do I find out about the weight of this laptop ? wondering if it is OK for business
#38
Decided to finally take the plunge with this machine - thanks for the post!

Well the laptop wouldn't be at fault because it got a virus? Virus' are software based and as such any machine you buy could get one. Use some antivirus software and be careful which sites you vist or what you download.

It will bequite heavy i suspect - 17 inchers are good desktop replacements but don't usually travel well due to size and weight.

According to this it's 3.6 kg - I reckon nearer 4kg fully specced.
