I'd opt for this one instead. If you add on the graphics card to that it comes out at £599.xx and it's a better graphics card by benchmarks. Effectively you are upgrading the 2x 512mb Ram to 2x 1024mb Ram for £51 plus getting a better graphics card in the bunch.

Of course if you're working to a tight budget, ignore what I just said.

It's also worth mentioning that I rang up about the one I just posted and got them to upgrade it to the below specs for £655 which I think is a real bargain:

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7200 Processor (2.0GHz,667MHz,4MB L2 cache)
2048MB 533MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x1024]
160GB (5400rpm) SATA Hard Drive
256MB ATI® Mobility™ Radeon® X1400 HyperMemory
9 cell Lithium-Ion Battery

Dell already do a solid state drive for one of their laptops

For what it's worth, I bought this Dell laptop back in March (for £650.. sigh..) and it's a cracker.

A little bit too heavy to be carrying around all day long, but a really good Desktop replacement.

I would recommend paying a little extra to have it with one 1Gb memory chip, rather than 2 x 512Mb chips (so you can upgrade it easily later), but other than that, it's well worth the money, and the keyboard is really comfortable, if you're going to be typing all day.

scriptor are you sure you got that laptop down to £655 as when i go to the link and upgrade it to your specs its £928.32!

What did u say to the sales team to get it so low?

Bought a similar laptop recently for the old dear:

Dell Inspiron 6400
Duel Core T2080 1.73ghz
1 gig ram
80gb
256meg graphics
Vista Basic!!!

Also I finally received my Vista Premium upgrade disc from dell.

So i thought id have a little preview of vista before i installed it on my own computer. I don't know if anyone else has had this problem but it seems that vista is incredibly slow to say the least, takes ages to start up/shut down, and even simple tasks such as selecting a music track to play seems to have a delay of 5 seconds, and that's when windows media player is already open!!! Im so shocked, as this is vista basic for crying out loud! :x I think i will definitely be sticking to XP for now. Does anyone have any ideas of to why this is occurring? or if you have already upgraded from xp to vista your opinions would be great.

Oh and yes this is a lovely laptop, well designed and great specs, vista is irritatingly slow as a 56k modem. Be 100% sure before purchase, as its mission impossible if you try to cancel orders with dell. Great find.

Vista really only starts performing when you have at least 2gb RAM (Or that is what I have found anyway)

On the delay with sound problem in Vista, I had that problem when running on a Dell PC, and seems related to the SigmaTel sound device. I did the following given in the link below, and it fixed the problem.

I remember before Vista came out Dell was recommending 2GB of RAM as a minimum. Couldn't believe it. An operating system.

Thanks BigFish, that's sorted the audio issue  . Your a diamond.

I would of thought that 1 gig of ram for Vista "Basic" is plenty considering most of the features have been stripped, plus recommended ram for basic is 512mb.

So is it worth installing vista premium on my pc? Are there any other annoying issues that i should be aware of? cheers.

I am running Vista, expecially because I wanted the new Media Center Application, as I have the PC attached to my Plasma and use it as a DVR.

I have not had any big problems with Vista, but I have not installed a lot of extra applications. You probably want to check that the applications you want to run work. (I have old MsMoney and MsWorks working fine.) Apparently Nero needs upgrading and there may be issues with Sony Vegas.

Other stuff I have running OK is Picasa 2, itunes, Harmony remote software. Ebay TurboLister had a problem with editing items in Vista, but that may be fixed now.

Om the Premium versus Basic front, I would think the main reason for Premium would be for the Media Center software, if you want it. The Aero interface, which you do not get with Basic, has the only real advantage of seeing mini versions of the window when hovering over the items in the TaskBar. The see-through effects with Aero are just a gimmick.

Thanks again BigFish.

i have one of these with the vista basic with 1gig of ram and can say its nice but not good! if you apply the performance gadget to the side bar then watch, it ticks over at around 52% ram usage even when the thing is just sat there doing nothing!
i would recommend 2gig ram ;-)

isnt this around the same spec as the Aldi deal a few weeks ago?

does this laptop come with inbuilt wireless, I know most do now but there seemed to be an option to choose between
Intel® Pro Wireless 3945 802.11a/b/g Mini-PCI Card (for Core 2 Duo Processors) [Included in Price]
and
Intel® Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-Card (for Core 2 Duo Processors) [add £23.50 or £1/month1]

any answers would be great.

Yes it has wifi as standard, the choice is so you can have the latest N type card if you really want it.
